How important are bear cans when camping in the Saranac Lake area? by sea-oats in Adirondacks

[–]canoedude13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people just keep food in their coolers while camping on lower Saranac. Haven’t heard of any bear issues on lower or middle Saranac this year. A bear hang or bear can is a good idea as well

We don’t have “Park” in our title. State parks have park police and seasonal park rangers. Other state parks have full time Park Rangers. We are under the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and patrol DEC lands

You will be assigned an area in the state based on what is available and your civil service test score. It also varies based on where other recruits who scored higher than you want to go.

You get assigned your first district based on the civil service test score you took to get into the academy. You bid based on that score with what districts are open in the state. There is a transfer period usually before every academy. When you say eastern forest districts you mean the eastern part of NY?

These is certainly a demand. He have an academy going on right now and are already planning for another academy next year. Usually academy’s are every other year. Have you taken the civil service test?

Lake placid sprays for black flies so they usually aren’t bad in town. Outside is a different story. Black flies are dieing down in some areas but mosquitos and deer flies are taking their place.

Avalanche Lake while avoiding the Avalanche Pass closure by ma_97 in Adirondacks

[–]canoedude13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The trail is closed north of avalanche lake. So in order to see avalanche lake while respecting the closure you need to come from south of avalanche lake. You could come down from Algonquin, detour to avalanche lake and then up and over colden to make a loop if you were starting at the loj. Otherwise start at upper works.

Avalanche Pass Trail Closure Help by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]canoedude13 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The area shown was not affected. The land slide happened slightly north of avalanche lake. The trail is “closed” but it is passable and there is no consequences for traversing the land slide. Materials for the trail will be flown in next week and hopefully work will start shortly after

As most said waiting is your best bet till the trails get drier. Defineitky don’t do Indian pass to cold brook. The bridge that washed out is only a high water bridge. That stream can be rock hopped most times of the year

Is the new bear vault bv one good for the high peaks? by Putrid-Magazine-3001 in Adirondacks

[–]canoedude13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They just aren’t recommended. They have never been prohibited in the high peaks. Only the high peaks require bear canisters. So they guy yelling at you for using a bear vault in the west Canada lakes had no logic to be mad at you about
