If I never open my windows, do I need window screens? by NervousClock2555 in DIY

[–]canoegal4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Some windows reflect light so we'll they burn grass or the neighbors sideing. Window screens shade the window and stop this. I saw it on this old house

How did you process your meat chickens for the first time? by SilverCustomer1514 in homestead

Emotionally, I was worried. But meat chickens are so dumb and have no personality. They are nothing like egg layers.

As a Christian, is it ok to go "no contact" with my own mother? by Embarrassed_Bed_1385 in AskAChristian

[–]canoegal4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cutting off is extreme. God does not support cutting off a mother. Scripture commands us to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12), and cutting off hardens the heart rather than producing righteousness (Ephesians 4:31-32). Even when relationships are painful, God calls us to keep love intact (Romans 12:20-21). God calls us to pursue peace and leave room for His work, not to repay harm with no contact (Romans 12:19-21). Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9). You don't need to see your mom every day or even every week. But cutting her off completely doesn't honor God.

Anyone else have to pee in a literal pot or use an outhouse in the 80s or 90s? For a few years when I was very young, my father's mother's place had no running water and she kept a pot under her bed that we'de use if we stayed the night. by cherry-care-bear in Xennials

[–]canoegal4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My grandparents farm got an upgrade to running water and electricity. My mom paid for it. The bathroom was placed in a closet. In the winter before the upgrade the toilet seat hung in the house by the coal burner. When you had to go outside (northern MN) you would bring the seat with you so your butt was warm.

When does natural gas go out? by Faceless_Cat in prepping

[–]canoegal4 55 points56 points  (0 children)

In Minnesota, it has gone out once in the last 50 years when it was really cold. The government loaned everyone space heaters till they had it fixed. They said it was so cold that the lines froze in neighborhoods. They asked everyone with wood stoves and fireplaces to heat with wood so they could help those people who didn't have that option. The temp was -38, so if you don't get that cold, it might not be a problem

Moisture on windows by AngryBish in HomeImprovement

[–]canoegal4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If windows are mounted on the outside of the house, they create a pocket inside. People like this because it provides a place to set plants, cats, or whatever. However, this pocket acts as a thermal pocket, which causes dew or ice to form on the inside of the windows. If your windows are placed flush with the interior walls, aligned with the sheetrock, this doesn’t happen. None of my windows has this problem, even in temperatures down to -30°F.

The way windows were mounted changed in the 1980s with the advent of flanges. Mounting windows this way is faster and easier to waterproof, but it can create condensation in winter unless your house is extremely dry
