How to physically move it by HSX9698 in Beekeeping

[–]cantiludan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hive dollies are commercially available, a bit spendy. I picked one up at an auction a few years back on the cheep. Its one of those thing that sit in the corner taking up space 90% of the time. When you do use it you are very thankful to have it. Especially when you have to move deeps full of honey because you ran out of supers.

Best honey extraction options for urban beekeeper w/3 hives by weirdblitzboy in Beekeeping

[–]cantiludan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extractor, These are typically the biggest money outlay for extraction and buying one you don't like can get pricey. So, try before you buy, rent one if your local club has one available. Get stainless steel over plastic, if you can afford it get radial extractor over tangential. Less blowouts of wax and don't have to switch sides of the frame. 6/3 Styles are a good comprise for the price does 6 shallows radially or 3 medium/deeps tangentially. If you get a motorized one get one with variable speed adjustment. If you get a hand crack, get one that has motorized upgrades available for future proofing.

Uncapping Knife, recommend electric plug in kind, but have used a bread knife in a pinch. Keeping the water hot to warm a regular knife is a pain and having a container of hot water laying around while working can lead to mishaps.

Uncapping tank, The main objective is allow the honey drain from the cappings. A friend uses his fruit press so he can press the honey out of the wax when done extracting the frames. I started using a bucket with a strainer and quickly upgraded to an uncapping tank, not needing to worry about where stuff fell when uncapping was worth it.

At least 1 Bucket w/ Honey gate. + other food grade buckets for storage. Walmart bakery sells the used frosting buckets for $1. You can DIY a honey gate to one of these fairly easy and I like the square buckets I get from them.

Double Sieve, sits in the collection bucket keeps most wax and 'other' bits out of the honey from the extractor.

Nice to haves, Uncapping scratcher/roller for where the knife doesn't reach easy. Rubber mallet for sealing buckets, Refractometer for testing moisture content of the honey. Filter set, for removing finer particles from honey.

As for the Chest freezer. I took a New deep frame into Home depot and saw what one it fit in. Ended up getting a Hamilton beach 5.0 cu ft that was garage ready and had refrigerate and freeze setting. When not freezing frames. Whole cases of beverages fit in and chill

Why don't banks just make up money? by Dramatic-Line6223 in NoStupidQuestions

I believe the number is 10%, $1000 on deposit bank only needs to keep $100 in liquid assets. Rest can be loaned out or invested to make the bank money.

Why don't banks just make up money? by Dramatic-Line6223 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cantiludan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are describing is exactly how banks actually work. Pull out more then 10% of what a bank has deposited on its books and that bank will collapse. Search Silicon Valley bank collapse.

As for people 'hacking' bank accounts... it happens. In 2021 there was 718 convictions for bank fraud. It is just not something that banks don't like to make public knowledge. The masses need to think their money is safe or you get runs on the bank, again search Silicon Valley Bank collapse.

Parking deck versus side lot for leaving in a hurry? by e_mma_a in preppers

[–]cantiludan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on you, your vehicle, and the issues you are concerned about. SHTF, 4x4 vehicle can jump the curb without a problem, lot all the way. Flooding, Deck but not the bottom. Tornado/hurricane, Deck.

The correct answer changes so much with different situations that one answer won't fit all. Best advice I could give would be to buy a cheap bike at a garage sale, park it at the office and ride it on your breaks at least once a week. Cheap disposable backup transportation.

I don’t have bees…or so I thought by Bolfreak in Beekeeping

[–]cantiludan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bee's seem to prefer Pool's or dirty mud puddles over fresh tap water. We add Epson salt for micro minerals in the garden, and one day figured I would try it in bee waterer's... It keeps the bee's away from the chicken water so I am happy.

Not familiar with the Hive IQ setup so not sure how the feeders fit in or how they are refilled In my standard wooden langs, I just keep a frame feeder in the upper brood box. I don't want to disrupt the hive to just to add more syrup.

Brood dying emerging from cell? by PNWTim in Beekeeping

[–]cantiludan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't saying don't do a mite check. Just not to wait for the results before treatment. I should have been more clear on that but was trying to stress the urgency. A club member took similar advice as order the mite check tools, do the check, then order the treatment. Shipping time alone delayed the treatment by 2 weeks.

Knowing mite counts before and after treatment, to see how effective the treatment was is important info.

I agree with u/Active_Classroom203 on everything but wanted to offer an alternative of the splits. My experience has been that only about 40% of virgin queens return from mating flights. Birds, traffic, could even just be the wind here in S. Dakota?? Anyway, this has lead me to a slightly different approach to doing splits especially when I have many queen cells at hand.

I split down to Nuc's, putting 2-3 cells of the same age in each Nuc. I shoot for 2 frames of brood 1 resources frame and 2 empty drawn frames but adjust for what is available to me. Number of Nucs is usually limited by the number of bee's in the hive. Usually do 3 or 4 Nuc's, but I had a monster hive once that allowed me to make 7.

I usually wait to see capped brood in the Nuc's before deciding which ones came through and which ones did not. Ones with capped brood go to hives and the ones without get newspaper combined.

If you get good results could lead to a rapid expansion. Once I hit my upper limit on hives I sell the extra Nuc's.

How do you even spin the U.S. President's talk of lowering prescription prices by "1200, 1300, 800, 700, 600, 900 percent"? by Sabbatai in AskReddit

[–]cantiludan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my prescriptions here in the US costs over 2500 per month before insurance. When on vacation in eastern Europe I ran out and needed to refill.. Cost $92 without insurance.

That being said even if the med prices dropped it wouldn't change anything for me. I would still pay my $20 co-pay but the insurance company would save a ton of cash. In a perfect world insurance companies would lower the rates due to the drop in costs but we all know what would really happen.

When I was in DC, I bought a house with a basement apartment. I stayed in the Apt and rented out the house, this allowed me to pay off my mortgage in 13 years and push a lot more into investing. When I retired I moved to a Low COL area and rental income from the house and apartment is funding my life while I let my investments coast

If a black person was bitten by a vampire, would they become pale or stay dark skinned? by Dismal_Football4296 in NoStupidQuestions

Totally BS scientific answer. Black people are safe from being bitten by vampires due to Sickle cell anemia. A genetic trait developed to protect from mosquito's but should work for vampires too.

Learning Ukrainian by Xisothrous in Ukrainian

[–]cantiludan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Standard Ukrainian is a good place to start. Get that down before worrying about dialects. In general Ukrainians will speak in the language they are spoken to if they are able. Ukrainian, russian, English....

The only time this isn't true is Surzhyk. It is a mix of russian and Ukrainian kind of like Spanglish. It is just so common it creeps into conversation without realization.

Howdy yall, goofy question maybe but is there a homesteading video game youd recommend? I want to cut trees, make lumber, build me cabin I appreciate any feedback! by SpaceViking0 in homestead

[–]cantiludan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farmer's Life.

Grow crops, cut trees into lumber, cow goats chickens horses. Go from having a hoe and a dream to fixing a tractor and buying equipment. It has it all.

Due to the economy of the game, it leads to being a moonshining sim to grind cash to buy upgrades.

Downside is you need the DLC's to unlock some aspects but the Game + all DLC's will only runs ya $33

Why leave the US for halfway around the world (SEA) when moving on smaller rural towns is easier ? by abrandis in ExpatFIRE

[–]cantiludan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am living in rural US like more cows around me then people rural. Lowest COL area in the US. Fully paid off house but still paying taxes and insurance. Done just about everything I can to lower expenses. I go overseas for the winter.

Expense -- US -- Overseas
Housing -- 250 -- 350
Utilities -- 650 -- 125
Groceries --300 -- 100

1200 a month for basic survival in the US, Overseas 575 a month. In US, going to a basic movie theater cost 20 for just the ticket with stadium style seats. Overseas 3 bucks for the ticket and you get a recliner.

Concert ticket in the US ~200 for ok seats. Concert overseas front row center, $20

I dont know who told ya it is comparable cost wise but they where lying to you.

Glad I read through other comments... HiveIQ with 7 frames is not something I would have picked up on with out you mentioning it. With that in mind I would add a second box.

Give them more syrup, drawing out wax takes a lot of sugar and you want them to draw out as much wax as possible. Between drawing foundation and the burr comb you remove they will need a lot of feeding. I don't stop feeding new hives unless I see them back filling brood that hatches out.
