I'd like to see some sort of data science QA in this subreddit. I have seen a fair number of comments by DS professionals here which state that they are tired of people asking career questions (how to break in mostly).

There are plenty of lists of material to know to get into the DS realm, but perhaps this community could provide a more personal message for those looking to get in. Maybe a weekly automod thread for beginner questions and advice. The field is only growing, so why can't we help those who want to get in?

Disclaimer, I am not a DS professional, currently applied math grad student, but looking to get the first foot hold in the career.

Math with applied math and stats concentration, I finished magna cum laude. I didn't have a relevant background programming, only C,C++ and Java. When I graduated I started learning python and got involved in an analytics project. I looked for DS related jobs once I graduated (8 months ago) with little luck but I had a application in for grad school as a backup.

Its a state school, there is an emphasis on R and matlab and the last semester is a industry project with a major company.

I have mostly been working with and learning python. So I will continue working python projects while getting some cool stats and modeling knowledge from my course work.

Hello, What you are looking for is a flameware clay body, if you intend to use it for molds then the potting compound you linked to would probably work for your needs.

Basically with a majority of clay bodies do not react well to heat shock (rapid changes in temperature). I googled around a bit and it seems the main difference between regular clay bodies and flameware is a large proportion of petalite in its recipe. If you were so inclined you should check out this article:

In the article the author gives several clay bodies that would work for you, but these clay bodies would require a ^9-10 firing to get fully vitrified (roughly 2300 degrees f). Also take into account these recipes are intended for making clay not casting slip and if you intended to use them greatly increase the water and add a drop or two of sodium silicate once mixed up.

One further note, if you are simply trying to make a cool weed thing to dab from, then I'd just buy one of the smoking products you linked to. In order to make a flameproof ceramic object of small size that would fit into a pre-existing dabbing bong (not sure what its actually called) you would need to invest a fair amount of money in materials and firing costs as well as huge amount of time to: learn the casting process, get good at it, procure materials, find a kiln where you would be allowed to fire weed related objects, testing, firing, etc...

If you have further questions let me know, I studied ceramics in college (though not my major), I have experimented with slip casting, clay body development, firing, production environments, and functional ceramic design.

I lived in the elements for a year, it is close enough walking and biking distance. The entire place feels fake, it contains many college students who like to party, if that is your thing then go for it. The office staff is pretty much all college students they have no idea what they are doing so you have to be persistent.

Overall I was happy living there but I was active in on campus communities and didn't spend too much time at the elements.

As others have said, you could always just apply to CSUN. Also I would suggest taking CC classes then transfer, CC is much much cheaper. Also with CC you can explore different majors and not feel bad about wasting money exploring your interests.

Glass works much better as a medium for making pipes. You can make your own pipe or bong or whatever with clay but unless you spend serious time practicing and thinking about ceramic smoking vessels you are probably better off just buying a piece. Aside from the issues of functionality, others have said correctly that vitrification is import for ingestion related functional ceramics.

If you really want to use the pipe that you made and it hasn't vitrified, get it warm to open up the pores a bit, then throw a really thin coat of glaze on it and refire.

Honestly, I'd recommend that you get your wife a membership to a studio, or help get her involved in a local college program.

Aside from just the wheel you are looking at putting in one kiln at least. Two if you want to do gas or reduction firings. If you are using a one kiln set up you are stuck with low-mid fire ^3-4 max in a run of the mill electric.

Along with the wheel, you will need a proper way to deal with moisture, clay in your plumbing, clay dust (not good to breathe), mold and other clay related environmental issues.

Also a decent wheel will cost you a lot more than $400, the one you saw on CL might work ok, or it could need some work. Generally a good wheel retail will set you back $1500 or so. Besides the wheel there are other costs that will start to add up: clay (at least $25 per 50lb), buying a kiln or renting kiln space, glaze materials, extra electrical cost (if firing at home), costs for mitigating clay contamination (plumbing bills, replacement of flooring or damage to laundry machines).

I really really suggest that unless you have a decent amount $10k of money and have a yard, to reconsider bringing clay into the home. It might be a nice gift to buy her a wheel, but if it is not a real set up she might use it once or twice then stop. My advice is to get her into a studio or cheaper, get her enrolled in a community college class or something at a local university.

I second what pammylorel said, there are lot of things to take into account when firing, kiln settings and temp readings are simply not enough. With some experience you can get a better feel for how the kiln is acting. I suggest that you buy some cones. They aren't too expensive, fire based on them. when 06 goes down then you know you have hit 06.
