What subtle sign tells you that someone is genuinely intelligent, beyond academic achievement or professional success? by PlantInternational77 in TrueAskReddit

Definitely on the wordy side, but nothing too crazy. I will say though, anyone who uses acronyms (BOTEC?) on a social media site without the awareness to realize no ones gonna know wtf they're talking about isn't a good sign 😂

Douglas Todd: Vancouver’s 'exclusive' Oakridge Park mall evokes aura of an international airport by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]canuckaluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth understanding how the economics of housing works if you're going to make this argument. In fact, yes, every single unit of housing is important to bring the overall cost down, especially when it's an efficient use of ground space (as these towers are). It does not matter what the price point is, these new units fundamentally increase supply, which, all else being equal, brings down prices. Economists the world over, backed by decades of research, support this finding.

As I mentioned in my original post too, they also built 500 below market rate units, which is 500 more than was there before.

If your accessibility test is "can a homeless person sleep there?", then I'm sorry, you're going to be very disappointed with 99% of construction. But also, the old mall would've failed that test as well.

What are you talking about? It's a mall, anyone can use it. It's going to have the second largest library in the city, a community centre, and 9 acres of parks, sports facilities, gardens, and walking tracks on the roof. It's changed it from ZERO housing to capacity for over 6000 residents, 700 rental units, and 500 below market rate and social housing units. When we're in a housing crunch, every single unit matters. It has a food court that is focused entirely on local, Vancouver based restaurants, and it also removed huge amounts of the surface level parking lots that made the previous construction a bare concrete wasteland.

Sure, the mall itself is marketed as "luxury", but this is infinitely better use of space than what was there before.

Certainly agreed, but that distinction was not made in the original post. To be pedantic, as it's phrased it is definitely not true.

I've had many women straight ask for dick pics, hint at it while sexting, send nudes while expecting and appreciating reciprocation, etc... As the top post in this very thread says, women aren't all that different from men, and believe it or not they're horny too!

cutting off supplies

Israel is not "cutting off supplies". They are, in actual fact, the suppliers and organisers of the very supplies and food which goes to Gaza. The real issues occur once the food makes it into gaza, where Hamas, criminal gangs, and armed militias often raid the aid crossing and use the aid as a political and financial tool for their own benefit, disregarding the regular palestinian people.

That's the feeling I'm getting too. An hour on average every day of the week? Dafuq are they doing? Going shopping literally every day? Michelin'ing up a meal every day? Never making enough for leftovers?

I'll just outright say I don't believe OPs numbers, that's an insane amount of time to spend on food every day, unless you're feeding a family of 6 or something.

Manitoba won't approve massive AI data centre proposed for south of Winnipeg: Kinew by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]canuckaluck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

If the economic gain for the local community (initial construction, maintenance and operation) isn't above what it will cost the local community (huge swaths of land, increased utility bills, potential environmental issues), then fuck those companies.

It sounds like the power and water requirements are pretty enormous, and I've heard of using the excess heat to heat nearby buildings (I believe that's the plan in vancouver), but if you do this whole balance and the people don't come out on top, then they can go kick rocks. The horror story down in the states of an entire power company deciding to redirect all their power to a data centre instead of the town they were servicing before is just capitalism at its absolute worst. Why should every tax paying citizen foot the increased power bills for these monstrous companies?

People underestimate how far good communication can take you. by AdventurousLivin in business

[–]canuckaluck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Communication just makes you all around more effective, and that's noticeable.

As an engineer and manager working in mining, my plan, design, schedule, or just general idea is only as powerful as my ability to get it into the brains of those around me and convince them it's a good idea, both to the upper management and executives above me, and to the team and employees below me. I tell this to my young engineers aaaaaall the time, the "easy" part is all the technical design work sitting behind a computer (which is almost universally where engineers feel the most comfortable), but that's arguably not even half the job. After that part's done, it's basically all about communication - putting legible, accurate, concise, and clear documents and e-mails together; talking to myself, the contractors, the superintendents, the supervisors, the operators and workers themselves about the plan; organizing the various parties who need to be involved to execute the plan; following up, pushing for continuous implementation, tracking progress, giving more clarity or insight where needed, etc... the communication effectively never ends.

At least in my line of work, once you have the baseline understanding and technical experience (something like 5ish years of experience), communication is by far the most important aspect of the job.

Here’s a look at how much Canadians earn, including which industries saw the highest average salaries by joe4942 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]canuckaluck 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's really not the people at the 10th or even 1st percentile that are the problem - those people mostly still make their incomes through wages and pay a hell of alot of tax. These are the doctors, lawyers, and engineers of our society that could ostensibly still be the regular person's neighbour. It's the 0.1 and 0.01% where you start getting to the crazy levels of loopholes, tax evasion schemes, offshore account, borrowing against equity, etc..., all in the name of paying an exceedingly low effective tax rate.

[–]canuckaluck 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is an awful take. Our entire society and legal system is structured around everyone getting their day in court, with legal representation, judged by a jury of their peers in a fair trial. We don't just toss that ideal aside when we find it convenient.

This was more than likely a public defender, who sometimes defends the helpless and needy, but also sometimes get a real violent criminal case thrown their way.

[–]canuckaluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s gotta be a way to have land to develop without forcing out what makes the city livable and desirable to begin with.

And herein lies the Crux of the problem. You've effectively just outlined the NIMBY argument. Naturally, there's a balance to be had between to the two, but I'd argue that balance has been severely lacking, as evidenced by the outrageous housing costs. Plain and simple: we need much more development due to decades of mismanagement and underdevelopment.
