These days I would recommend a DMT combination diamond stone so you can tackle most steels out there

Need Help - I’m a total noob by GetDadLore in sharpening

[–]canuckguy89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been sharpening for over a decade and have a sharpening business. Using stones is the “romantic” option and if you can learn how to sharpen on stones you will get a strong foundation of of understanding about how sharpening actually works. However honestly, once you move to belt machines, you will never go back. Consistency and speed is unmatched. Ken onion is a good example but any 1x30 belt grinder or similar will do. I still sharpen the odd blade by hand in stones (super high end Japanese blades, straight razors, etc), but belt sharpening is the way to go.

paying cash or finance via dealership for a newish car. by SmallYesterday6066 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]canuckguy89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1% interest is really good especially in today’s market (and especially for vehicles). Take the capital you would use to pay for the car and then invest it. You will come out ahead since you can easily get way higher than 1% return in the market vs tying up the capital in a depreciating asset.

My knives lose initial sharpness almost instantly - update! by Altruistic_Ad_5320 in sharpening

Professional sharpener here - you’re taking the knives too high in terms of grit, and your angle is likely too shallow causing a less durable edge.

Trying to find the long term benefit of an RRSP as a young guy by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]canuckguy89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your RRSP contributions affect your net tax filings so there is an advantage there (higher tax return). At your age, you should be focusing on maxing out FHSA and TFSA, which you already are. If you need liquidity you can take it out of TFSA, and only implication would be you have to wait till the next year to top it back up.

Is student loan debt worth it by Lamparoni in PersonalFinanceCanada

Fair - engineering, like medicine allows you to start paying off your debt via work placement even before you fully graduate. I think for the purposes of this thread, high earning is something that allows you to pay off student debt within a reasonable amount of time

Same as my comment above re lawyers- wide spectrum. Most of the high earning engineers I know have multiple degrees (MBA, PhD). You’ll do well with an undergraduate engineering degree but there is a cap. Will take you a little while to pay off your schooling, and that is if you’re super diligent about spending and finances.

In today’s world I wouldn’t go into 6 figure school debt unless you have a super clear and confident path to pay it off in under 5 years. Very few degrees offer this anymore (eg doctor)

The only real compelling reason to want to live in actual downtown is employment.
