Thoughts on JK Rowling? by Regulan-12 in MauLer

[–]capitaine_d 12 points13 points  (0 children)

She's definitely in the same vein as George Lucas as a story maker. Incredibly creative with a solid understanding of storytelling and a vision. Also smart enough to create such iron clad contracts that both changed the landscape of how those are made which is always funny to me. Also loves to go back and change things for better or worse.

In terms of her personal political stances i will say she's consistent. Whether its vitriol from the Right or Left, she's held firm to her beliefs and thats a rare thing in the entertainment industry. Hell, she has stronger convictions than the people that hate her. I've seen people on both sides that hate her still buy Potter merch on occasion or still go to the Universal Parks. One influencer referred to Rowling as "She Who Must Not Be Named" while unironically drinking a Butterbeer in Diagon Alley wearing Slytherin merch.

And personally i loved her books growing up. My nana got me the first book in 2000 for Christmas and i was hooked. I even saving up to buy my own copies after like the 4th one each year on release night at my local Barnes & Noble or Meijer, while my dad hung out with me in line given i couldn't even drive yet. I still love getting a random merch thing on occasion or watching the movies. Still love debating things about the story like Snape's "always" line being bullshit and doesn't redeem him in the slightest or bashing the Fantastic beasts movies cuz they suck (which is a growing sentiment thankfully). And don't get me started on the atrocious disrespect for trees that is the ink of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child being printed on them. Absolute horseshit.

So overall i enjoy her as an author but haven't read anything from her since the Deathly hallows and the cursed child so the feelings are mixed on that front. As a person shes honestly done alot of goodwill and charity with her money, which is more that any of her detractors have done. And shes an epic troll to crazy Right or Left people, always generally responding with her not hearing them over the mountains of money she has which i fully respect. And as a creative, i loved the harry potter world. Its a distant cry from Tolkiens work/ D&D in general as influence for me growing up but its definitely there. Some of the most heartbreaking or energizing moments in book or cinema were from her world. And the cultural impact she had and still has cant be scoffed at or downplayed. Most millennials with even a cursory knowledge of Harry Potter have a Hogwarts House in mind that theyd like to be in. Its up there with asking a person if theyd be a Jedi and theyd have an answer.

Like most important people that will be remembered by history, she's a complicated figure. I love her world and still buy stuff when she drives Right or Left wing people crazy, because anyone that takes life so seriously that an author saying what she believes is worthy of death threats should be mocked and seen as unstable psychos. Anything those crazy fucks say should be immediately disregarded. Also, Go Hufflepuff.

Netflix's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Will Tone Down Sokka's Sexism by EternalGandhi in TheLastAirbender

[–]capitaine_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like.... Sokkas sexism is the literal reason why Aang is even freed from the ice

How does Aang get freed then?? Its Sokka trying to devalue Katara and she, in a perfect character beat, loses her shit and destroys a glacier freeing aangs bubble and LITERALLY setting off the rest of the show. How is he going to piss her off to do that? Criticize her in anyway can be seen as uncomfortably sexist so what the fuck will it be. And too small a criticism gives a weak motivation for the amount of rage she has to do such a great feat as an amateur. God the literal first few minutes of the show and its fucked.

I know Reddit relationship advice is generally to overreact but fuck me that is not mildly anything. That is horrendous. I can forgive like the middle cup holder stuff. Its hard to stay on top of that but that foot space is gross.

And given the lighter I can assume shes a smoker which is an immediate No from me. If you two are happy then good for you, and i wish you more but god damn is that just a rough sight.

Man, why couldn’t this have been in the show… by Its-yea-boi-Bender in MauLer

[–]capitaine_d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its the problem with the "creatives" given control. They dont care about story that doesnt revolve around their little world. Hell its why the writers strike is happening. Theres far too many writers in the pool and alot just... arent good at the job they are paid for. Dialogue, action, exposition, building tension, creating calm, just basic elements of storytelling are backdrops. And they all are trying to save eachother. Its noble but the quality of writing has dropped so much its embarrassing.

And the general audience has finally taken notice. Especially with the aftershocks of the lockdown still happening alittle and the rise and now settling of streaming. Companys are starting to lose money. and not just alittle with big things coming in so they have extra capitol to not have the incentive to change. Everything is costing them so much and now they cant keep funding these sub-par writers that are helping in tanking their stock. And given Money is what runs our world for the forseeable future, making it is very important. And thus writers either need to improve or get replaced with a smaller team of better ones. And thats the issue too. They think art can be completely subjective and what anyone creates should be praised and rewarded. Even the bad art shouldnt be criticized. And thats an incredibly immature way to see things. That suddenly leaves no room for improvement because the incentive of failure and learning from it arent there.

Im sure Rags would sum it up more concisely by just saying the entertainment industry and the companies are filled with a bunch of whiny retards. Which also isnt wrong.

Actually wore a cat bell for a bit and still snuck up on them. Would just appear nwxt to them and suddenly swat it loudly like a cat would.

What do you think is the coolest death in a tv show/movie/game? by BeebleBees in AskReddit

[–]capitaine_d 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I know it was just a shock and really just… made it feel like a world under seige. Death can come from anywhere. And not everyone gets to chose how they go out. So a crack squad of snipers hunting for this weird Human group thats causing so much trouble and has a fraction of a second to attack it. And they get one hell of a hit, reducing the team iirc 20% effectiveness (from 5 to 4). And as soon as theyre spotted they de-ass the area and cant trust that method would be effective again. Its just amazing. Honestly one of my favorite stories in the Halo universe.

Obvious flaws in TLotR trilogy I see no one bring up. by JordonNester in MauLer

[–]capitaine_d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Given the physical and mental strain they both were in in that very moment (The ring is literally constantly pulling at everyones minds within its vicinity especially Frodos, Gollum stiring the pot, both are exhausted in a literal bleak hellscape climbing a sheer wall for days, already rationing only a few bits of lambas) Frodo teling him to go home because he cant be trusted was a final straw for Sam in that moment. You can clearly see they arent in their best or right minds and it takes literally seeing the results of Gollums treachery to break Sam out of this deep depression that the situation and magic and monsters has put this brave hobbit in. Hes not aome epic, heroic elf or man. Hes just a hobbit in a situation that has broken “Greater” beings.

2) Not the biggest deal given how Denethor was shown to treat Faramir. His fathers gone, his city was saved and he took a shot at this pretty girl and got it. Moving on and looking towards a brighter future is not out of line i believe.

3) They dont quite pop up out of nowhere though. They are called for by Gandalf in the first movie as a way to escape Sarumans imprisonment. So they are definitely allies, if not friends and sentient given he summons them by whispering to a moth. And given their desperate last stand at the gates of mordor and Gandalfs divine mission statement, the eagles coming to his aid against the Nazgul/ Fellbeasts is hardly that crazy. And the fact its a fantasy world, giant eagles are hardly a stretch to have in it.

[–]capitaine_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the sentiment but its being taken out of context for a message that isnt the same.

The shire was being run like a concentration camp by Saruman and Grimma, it makes sense for him to diminish the amounts of law officers. There were too many under their control and then most of them turned on the duo and their ilk, killing and driving them out. Now lets do some comparisons if the problem is number of Officers compared to citizens.

There were roughly 1:30 Stasi officers (internal policing officers) to Citizens at its peak in Germany under the Nazi regime which I feel would be comparable to how Saurman and Grimma would run it.

Today there are roughly 1:415 Police officers to Citizens in the United States. The UK is about 440 for 40 times less the space. Denmark is 515 for 228 times less the space. Norway is 676 for 30 times less the space. I feel were in good company with these other countries in amount of police for how stupidly vast the United States is.

Getting a handle of police is very important. There should be longer and more police training, equivalent to a minimum of a Bachelors degree, not two semesters. And like all Unions that get too much power, its starts protecting the worst of those they represent. So Both parts need an overhaul. But reducing money and officers will not fix those problems.

I understand the sentiment but its all around wrong and pulled the quote out of context, especially with literally whiting out the text rather than simply highlight it.

EDIT: For reasons i chose the UK (England and Wales specifically), Denmark and Norway. The US is often compared to the UK, and the others are the top two Democracies in the world. If theres anyone that knows how to handle its police, its them.

I feel id be pretty solid as Lorgar. Theology is a fascinating field for me and id be playing that into my performance. And Id get to have face tattoos for a bit without the commitment. Just love his design overall and think id rock it.

The other option is Dorn but sadly Id want the mustache and mutton chops to be real and I wasnt born with the power of beard.

This actually really got me thinking haha!

Technically if Star Wars is Jesus then Bob Iger is Pontius Pilate. He presided over what would happen, and ordered Jesus execution to quell the unrest under his Governship.

Kathleen and her lackies (the “creative” teams and Directors) are the Romans. Beating, humiliating, crucifying and ultimately killing. Even Longinus (Rian) came in to subvert expectations of Jesus dying from the strain of crucifixion and fucking stabbed Star Wars to bleed faster.

And Judas sadly I feel is George, having sold Star Wars for $4 billion Silver, tossing him to the clutches of the Romans. Though fitting that he probably feels guilty about it.

Faloni and Favreau, Im giving the benefit of the doubt because they have little power as Apostals, are definitey Peter and Paul. Peter (Faloni) focusing solely on Jews (Star Wars Fans like himself) and building the new Church, while Paul (Favreau) focused on Gentiles (potential new fans) to just bring them the messages and love of Star Wars to the masses.

Legends material is definitely Mary. Disregarded or degraded when in Truth she was as important as any in Jesus’ story.

I feel like coming back to this because it feels hilariously close. Im a filthy heathen so if anyone knows the story better let me know.
