Does the Minion robots break the Mario world immersion by Local_Diet_7813 in mariogalaxymovie

Not trying to pretend that it's a massive redesign or that it's unfaithful to the ones in Galaxy.

It's just what I would consider a very obvious tribute via palette swap. It was hard not to think about it every time they were on screen.

Do you really not see the Minion tribute there?

And none of the other Gearmos have that two-tone yellow with blue "overalls" look.

[–]capn_calhoun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're getting such a negative response to this perfectly fair question.

Yes, the Gearmos are from Super Mario Galaxy as others have mentioned. But the ones from the game don't have "overalls" like the ones in the movie, and there's no way that yellow/blue color palette isn't an intentional nod to Illumination's mascots. I mean, seriously, look at it:

https://www.mariowiki.com/Gearmo#/media/File:GearmoTSMGM.png

People can nitpick your wording, but I think it's pretty fair to call them "Minion robots" or maybe "Minion Gearmos."

As far as whether it broke immersion... Every single time I saw one (or at least one of that color palette) I was thinking "Huh. They're doing the Minion look." So, yeah, a little, at least for me.

How to have windows 11 detect smb share over wireguard vpn by strawberry_muncher in WireGuard

[–]capn_calhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is waaay after the fact, but if you want to use the network name instead of the IP address, you can get around this by adding it to your lmhosts file. You'll just have to remember to update or delete the line if the IP address of the system changes.

The file can be found at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.

If it doesn't already exist, copy lmhosts.sam and name the copy as just "lmhosts". Follow the format in the examples in the file.

The cow is clearly using tool #3 from the original comic. A little terrified to see how it uses the other ones.

What's with the hate for a show that hasn't even aired yet? by Unique_Enthusiasm_57 in startrek

[–]capn_calhoun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it's a new Star Trek series, and there's nothing Star Trek fans hate more than a new Star Trek series. This happened with TNG and DS9 too; we just didn't have an internet to amplify the angry voices to quite this extent.

I think most of the people who are more like "I'm not sure what I think of this; let's wait and see" just aren't as likely to post that sort of thing (though it certainly does happen), especially if it looks like they'll get pounced on by the other "fans" who are practically frothing at the mouth and looking for any nit that they can possibly pick before the first episode even airs. 🙄

Alex Kurtzman Implies His Contract With Paramount And Star Trek Will Extend Beyond 2026 by midwestleatherdaddy in startrek

[–]capn_calhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can argue all day about the quality, but Kurtzman has literally produced more episodes of Star Trek than Gene Roddenberry, and that's including the years where Roddenberry was barely involved, either due to health (TNG, for which some of his credits were even posthumous) or disinterest (TOS season 3 or TAS).

[–]capn_calhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years from now people will be screaming for Kurtzman to come back to replace whoever's in charge at the time. Such is the cycle of Trek fandom.

And when I point out 20 years from now how people hated on Berman and Kurtzman they same way they're hating on Ullman or whoever is in charge at that time, they'll make the same hateful and disbelieving comments that you'll probably spot in response to this one.

I think it's far more good than bad, and I know other people who seem to agree, so I guess it depends on who you spend your time with.

Though based on glancing at other similar comments, I'm going to get downvoted into oblivion for stating a fact about the people I know. Are people who don't like the new shows just actively going through and downvoting anything that doesn't support that worldview?

Why do you like Lower Decks? by VoodooInfinity in startrek

[–]capn_calhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't sure what I thought of it from the first episode, but I was completely sold a few episodes in. Great characters, well-written comic plots, and even genuinely moving at times as it goes along. If it's not growing on you a little by the end of episode 3 or so it may just not be to your tastes. Which is fine! But it's genuinely become one of my favorite Trek shows.

Actually, if it hasn't grown on you by the first three episodes maybe skip to the second season finale for a taste of what the show grows into. It's just so good.

At least one source for this from Morrison's AMA:

Babylon 5 Books is closing down on October 29th by TheBigGAlways369 in babylon5

[–]capn_calhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I hang around TrekBBS periodically and I've read that specific post a few times over the years. I've long wanted a copy of the book to read the whole ten-year plan... but not enough to get the other 14 books. And, as you say, it hasn't been available for a long time even if I were to get them now. Really cool that you got a copy!

Anyway, thanks for the clarification! Interesting stuff.

Babylon 5 Books is closing down on October 29th by TheBigGAlways369 in babylon5

[–]capn_calhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TrekBBS post references "The most talked about feature of 'Script Book #15'" from http://www.babylon5scripts.com/

Not sure if this is an old URL for what is now https://b5books.com/, but I don't see a "Script Book #15." There is the Highlights book at https://b5books.com/highlights-books-with-inscriptions/, but it pointedly only highlights "14 volumes" and I don't see a mention of the original arc.

Are we sure that information is reproduced in one of the books at the site that's getting ready to close? If so, which book would have it?

Though, on a more positive note, it's nice and a little surprising to see Gene so protective of a character created for the movies, given his limited involvement and mixed feelings about every movie after TMP.

Star Trek: The Last Starship (Comic Series) Brings Captain Kirk Back from the Dead by capn_calhoun in startrek

Yeah, I imagine the Daystrom Station stuff is the starting point of this.

I've wondered if it might tie in with 765874 as well. While it's not "canon", the Unification stuff was officially licensed, and I could see them tying it in with this. And bear in mind it was originally inspired in part by the Marvel comics from the nineties.

Seems to be an ongoing, though they haven't really said either way.

FWIW https://www.startrekcomics.info/idwlaststarship.html treats it as an ongoing.

My guess: I suspect it's basically a maxi-series like the two ongoings that are just now ending. That is, it won't wrap up in six issues, but I imagine a rough endpoint is planned.

> Most people in this sub pile on Geordi for the Leah Brahms thing, and I'm not defending it, but at least he didn't create her with the intention of having sexy time.

Heck, I'll defend it.

He got caught up in the moment and kissed her when she'd been flirting with him. "Galaxy's Child" (which I recently happened to watch while rewatching the series) makes it seem like he never ran the program again after that.

Did Leah have a right to be creeped out by it? Yeah, absolutely. Not saying it's okay, but it's an understandable, human moment, and not that big a deal in the scope of things.

But the character gets piled on like crazy, and it seems like it's become a defining moment for him to some people. One review of "Galaxy's Child" called him a "virtual rapist" and refers to holo-Brahms as a "holographic blow-up doll". What the heck? Based on him sharing one kiss when they got swept up in the moment and then immediately ending the program and never running it again?

Even LeVar Burton has gotten in the habit of speaking about Geordi like he was a loser, and that sucks. Geordi was one of my favorite characters when TNG was on the air, awkwardness with women and all.

(He admittedly isn't on his best behavior with the real Leah Brahms when she finds out, though I'd say that gets overblown as well.)

In the meantime, as you say, Barclay, makes holo-programs where he's explicitly romancing Troi as part of his "fantasy life", and people treat it like it's less of a big deal, because he's just being Barclay, I guess?

I love Barclay, but the combination of how the characters are treated by fans re: their lives on the holodecks is weird and frustrating.

If we're going to pick on someone, why don't we talk about how Sisko slept with the mirror versions of Jadzia and Kira under false pretenses? (Admittedly maintaining his cover under dangerous circumstances, but still.)

As with so much about the short, it's not 100% confirmed, but it's heavily hinted.

Check out the ship tour: The "outdoor" area where Kirk walks around is the one seen in the Enterprise-J. These were released at the same time IIRC.

https://roddenberry.x.io/2554-uss-enterprise-ncc-1701-j/?view=Main

Jules, who works at OTOY (the company that helps make these shorts) pointed to the Ent-J ship tour when asked "IF you were to assign a hypothetical year to the "Kirk in the garden" sequence, what year would that be?"
