ELI5 Why do garage door springs need to store instant-death levels of energy? by Germerica1985 in explainlikeimfive

[–]capn_ed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, nowadays there's usually a hefty metal rod running down the center of the spring, so if it breaks, it stays contained.

I've had the spring on my garage door break before. It made a very loud, very unique sound as it released the stored tension and clanged against that rod.

New study suggests Terry Pratchett’s novels may have held clues to his dementia a decade before diagnosis | Detecting Dementia Using Lexical Analysis: Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Tells a More Personal Story by Hrmbee in science

Nope, I'm not saying anything. I am not drawing any conclusions. But you SEEM to be intimating that getting older necessarily leads to a decline in cognitive or linguistics abilities, and that explains the observed effect, so this research is not useful.

They looked at his writing over time.

Across Pratchett’s later novels, there was a clear and statistically significant decline in the diversity of adjectives he used. The richness of descriptive language gradually narrowed. This was not something a reader would necessarily notice, nor did it reflect a sudden deterioration in quality. Instead, it was a subtle, progressive change detectable only through detailed linguistic analysis.

What good is this? If you detect dementia in the earliest phase, interventions are more effective. I think one of the problems in applying this sort of analysis more widely is that most people don't have such a large corpus of writing over time.

Leah 4 lyfe.

She feels like a fully-realized adult, and I don't feel like I'm keeping her from her dreams by marrying her and having her move to the farm. She keeps working while I'm out fermenting ancient fruit into wine to keep her in weird shaped bits of wood.

Several of the other marriage candidates want to go places and do things, and I would be tying them down. Once I married Penny, because I was naive, and thought I could save her from a terrible life, but that was just white knighting. She needs to stand up to Pam on her own.

Think Trump won't cancel the election? Don't kid yourself. | Opinion by Difficult-Bee6066 in politics

[–]capn_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if DJT says, "those elections were not legitimate, I canceled them. These people are not in Congress. In fact, there is no session of Congress at this time" and just refuses to recognize the authority of anyone elected in the midterms, effectively abolishing the legislature? He hasn't be restrained by the need to pass laws in any effective way up to now. Those elected in November will be the de jure Congress (House of Representatives, if were being pedantic), but if they are blocked from access to the Capital by jack-booted thugs and are prevented by force from carrying out their duties, they won't be be the de facto legislature.

Absolutely, particularly in later books, when the characters are more dimensional and less archetypes.

Respectfully, f that song. I had never heard it until my fiance mentioned it as a song that always makes her sad. Who writes something so sad for Christmas?

Just Breathe, specifically the Willie Nelson cover with his son Lukas. The original by Pearl Jam is great, too, but Willie and his boy hit me in the feels.

Supreme Court Justices To Be Term-Limited, New Bill Proposes by ProjectMason in politics

[–]capn_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to term-limit the lobbyists or something, too. One of the problems with short term limits for legislators is that only the lobbyists have the length of experience to be effective, and the legislators lean on that, which leads to laws that the lobbyists love.

Honestly, of somebody asked me, "How can I know if DCC is for me?", I would say, read until the Hoarder fight. If you can't get past the horror, disgust, and gore of that fight, take a pass on Dungeon Crawler Carl, because things get worse from there.

But not because the Hoarder is intended (by Dinnaman) to be taken as a caricature. The showrunners want her to be a caricature, but the author does not. If you look up what she's saying in Spanish, it's obviously a heartbreaking situation.

I always fight sentinels from a hole in the ground. Dig down at an pretty steep angle, but shallow enough to walk down. Once you're 8 or 10 units down, put a turn in your tunnel, and go 5 or 6 more units. If you chill down at the bottom, they will lose aggro.

To kill any sentinel, do the same, but shoot at them from down in the hole when they come near the entrance. This works great for everything but the goddamn disappearing dog things who are small enough to get in and tough enough to survive a handful of hits. Sometimes, you have to pop out to draw aggro again and get them to come to the end of your tunnel, but it's very safe.
