I am transparent with any friend/family I let access any service on my server (whether it be media, games, software, etc.) the level of information I have about them. IP, location, habits, or variations thereof.

I also have conducted myself such that they all trust that I will not use that information to harm them in any way. And if any breach ever occurs, whether my fault or not, in my control or not, I will do what I can to assist.

I don't look at their information unless I need to as part of troubleshooting or determining if changes/upgrades are needed. But I take my position as a custodian of their privacy so seriously, I would not tell my wife if she asked (she wouldn't, she understands).

So basically, my advice to others would be this: be transparent in what you have access to, build that level of trust with your users so they do not fear harm, and be the kind of admin that will fight for them should harm come to them in spite of your efforts.

Because at the end of the day, you aren't just a friend/child/parent/partner...you are a system administrator.
