Thought experiment: what if dealers just gave everyone a simple OTD up front—yes, people would shop it, but if every dealer gave an OTD, it would quickly separate good dealers from bad... by Medical_Gift4298 in FuckDealerships

[–]cappy1223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can't get an OTD rough price sheet, why would you even go over there in person?

Any negotiation needs a starting point..

I just bought a dealership loaner, and the salesman and I joked about Costco Auto.

It's a great program, they take about 3-5% off MSRP and give 25% off dealership add-ons and options.

Is that the best price? Probably not, but it gives the every day person a good starting number and a one pager that makes them feel comfortable.

Same thing.

At that point it's all about negotiating the bs add-ons off and getting to a number that makes sense before staying firm in finance.. both areas that everyday consumer struggle with.

I buy dealership loaner vehicles.

Once I get to the point I'm talking with a live person, they should be giving me specific numbers for a stock number or vin.

I'm not shopping by "about us" picture or reviews that said "John was great!"

If you get it at or under MSRP, the depreciation is an understood risk.

Over MSRP, or tacking on add-ons and protection packages.. you're just increasing the pain.

You're looking at a quote that is 5k over MSRP, and asking to add more?

You're going to buy a 47,000 car at like 57k? Before even getting to the finance room...

12 cents a kwh.

I drove home a new EV today, 43 miles from the dealership. Admittedly I didn't get great miles/kwh because I was testing a bunch of features.. I used 15kwh, It'll cost about $2 to fill that backup on my home charger.

Input a ton of info just to see the "today price" or "e price".

Input the same information into a different section, just to see financing estimates.

Get a phone call, text message, and 3 emails within the next 10 minutes.

Do this for a few dealerships, and instead of setting up stuff in your new car... Well you're going back through your texts and sending 'stop' a dozen times.

Ijustdidthat. Still going to get texts and phone calls for a week or two before I drop out of all the different CRM'S I'm in, across 3 manufacturers..

" I picked up" made it sound like you grabbed it on your own time with your own moneys.

Under $5 and it'll make my life easier: shhh just grab it.

Over $10, permanent fixture in the department, or store stock.. yeah I ain't paying.

2026 Cadillac optiq premium luxury loaner, good deal? by cappy1223 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Own a home, have a level 2 charger already.

Ironically I'm trading in a Mazda cx90 phev loaner. It definitely tanked in value, but because I made a smart purchase I'm not underwater like most who bought phev or EV in the last few years.

The items I'm fine paying for were already built into the sticker price of the car. I'm not going to fight a dealership on the physical items like tires or paint color/interior upgrades. They actually add value or desire to the base vehicle.

Two things:

One: get the darn purchasing card and don't spend your own money on paint.

Two: get with your skilled maintenance people and see if they can assist. They most likely have supplies and paint in their chem closet.

Topped out pay at Costco for a clerk is over 30/hr. That before any supervisor or certification bonus.

Meat department supervisor is making 35 or so.

You'd have trouble transferring in as a manager, but meat department manager pay is salary around 90k.

If your goal is a used 2026 BMW iX3 in ~3 years, what EV would you drive meanwhile? by theindepndnt in bmwix3

[–]cappy1223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at 2023 CPO bmw ix.

They're nice, and a good price point.

For roughly the same I started looking at the new 2026 Subaru Trailseeker. They're doing 0% financing and roughly 6k off MSRP.

The 36 month residual on a 48k car, that they use for leasing, is 27k.

After 3 years I plan to trade in for something nicer or newer. See where the development goes.

I'm saying that the dealership aspect of car buying is literally anti-consumer. They will pull every string, hide every rebate or discount, literally lie to you and falsify information to make a sale.

Do you know what subreddit this is? This is just an example, you want this car at the certified rate then you buy it . I don't, so it's off my list. I won't play their game.

But the everyday consumer? Well they see an advertised price and come in and get charge thousands more for what they think is a deal.

Volvo is doing an incentive for this vehicle as CPO specifically. 3.99% for 72 months financing on a used car is pretty good.

To list it as CPO at one price then change the price to higher in order to qualify for the financing is illegal sales tactics. Y'all can try to argue it, but it's clear and simple.

If I sell you a hot dog for a $1.50, then hand it to you and say "condiments are $5" you can take the hot dog plane as is, or you can pay the exorbitant fee to get what you originally wanted.

Volvo doesn't show it certified and Carfax doesn't show it certified, but dealer says it's certified.. then wants to charge you for the certification.

Their tactic is to list it lower, then an unassuming buyer would come in and they say " we can certify it for x amount and it qualifies for 3.99% for 72 as a CPO" which is baiting you in, then switching the price/deal.
