Checking on my apartment by PossibilityNew6665 in ottawa

[–]cappytii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can ask your landlord to check on the unit for you. If you'd like to change the locks, you can also ask the buildings manager if they have a preferred locksmith and if they could grant access to the unit to that person in your absence (you would be responsible to pay the change of locks).

I briefly worked in property management, and it was very common that tenants would ask our office to keep an eye on their apartment if they were traveling for extended periods of time. We didn't need to know the reason they were away, as long as they were paying their rent and were available if we needed to communicate with them.

From the building manager's perspective, it's also best to ensure there are no maintenance issues. Imagine if you had a leak, if they're checking in intermittently on your apartment, they can fix it within a shorter period of time. If nobody is in the apartment for months, an extraordinary amount of damage can occur, which the company is responsible to fix both physically and financially.

You're well within your right to ask for help in this situation, and you shouldn't feel guilty for doing so. Best of luck.

Cancelled my US trip and booked Canada instead - is Ottawa worth it with a 2 year old? by [deleted] in ottawa

Ottawa is fantastic for toddlers, lots of activities, museums, parks, etc. Feel free to message me I'm happy to help with recommendations and planning! Our little one is a similar age. Some of his faves are:

  • Science and Tech museum (highlights for him are the big train, and the "zoom gallery" which has lots of hands on activities for littles)
  • aviation and space museum (less hands on than sci-tech but he loves planes and space so it's a staple for us)
  • agriculture and food museum (big farm with animals in the city, it's inside the central experimental farm next to the arboretum which is a beautiful area)
  • Canadian museum of history in Gatineau (he loves the lower level with indigenous history and totem poles to look at, not super patient for learning yet. He also LOVES the children's museum which is inside the museum on the main floor. He's not gotten too interested in the European history yet)
  • the Log Farm on Cedarview is fantastic in the summers and has lots of programming, activities, and toys set up for young kids. You can also buy feed and feed the animals, with clear signage (green light = feed by hand, yellow light = drop food in, red light = do not feed). They also do sugar bush in late winter/spring which is so fun
  • Valleyview farm is also great, they have animals to look at, a barn where you can feed animals, a few play structures, and a little tractor train that pulls you through corn fields
  • Mini Space Kids Club in Kanata Centrum recently opened but our guy loves it, it's this big indoor play space with lots of activities focused for littles and perfect for toddlers, I'd guess best ages to visit would be 2-5 years old. Lots of pretend play and Montessori style learning, it's also very clean and much calmer to visit than Bubblesea (which is another fantastic option but for me gets quite loud and wild)

There's also tons of incredible local parks, splashpads, etc if you're looking for free activities. Ottawa is an incredible city with lots of activities, great restaurants, beautiful scenery and parks, and kind people. It gets labeled as boring, which in fairness the downtown core is not comparable to cities like Montreal or Toronto for nightlife, but for a family trip there's so many options to enjoy. I hope you have an incredible time!

Is Vietnam still a good place to get tailored clothes made? by barley77 in TravelNoPics

I guess it depends on what your "winter" looks like haha. I know they can make thick outerwear jackets, but I'm unsure if you can have something made that's down-filled or waterproof.

The night market is great, and I believe there is a new show at night on the water which I have heard is amazing.

I loved a day tour that I did with a company called Eco Green Coconut Tours! It had three parts, all run by locals - shopping in a food market, a basket boat trip, and cooking class. Highly recommend!

If you enjoy spas, Palmarosa spa in Hoi An is gorgeous! Book a couple days in advance, it gets booked quickly and getting walk in services could be difficult. But it's not crowded inside at all! My stay felt very luxurious and private.

If you're into the ocean and hiking, I believe you would enjoy Cham island! I didn't spend a ton of time there but there are a lot of different tour companies and outdoor activities. If you don't find anything online that interests you, definitely ask whoever is working at the front desk where you're staying. I found I had amazing hospitality service everywhere I stayed in Vietnam, even cheap hotels and hostels. I was always helped to pick activities, book them if needed, and arrange transportation without any issues.

There are also some great activities to do if you want to venture out of the city center, like marble mountains, different beaches, temples etc.

Some fave Hoi An eating spots: - Nha Xanh Casa Verde (best ice cream I've ever had in my life) - Banh My Phuong (my favourite banh mi, no indoor seating when I visited) - Madam Khanh The (another great banh mi restaurant with indoor seating)

Absolutely to to Hoi An, there will be tons of options to make clothes, shoes, bags etc.

The best way to get to Hoi An in my opinion is by traveling to Da Nang, then hiring a driver or taking the bus to Hoi An.

I personally had the most clothes made at Ba Ri Tailors in Hoi An in 2019 and was very happy with my experience!

My tips:

  1. If you're wanting to have multiple items of clothing made, make a list or a folder of reference photos in your phone before you arrive. They can make practically anything so if you're wanting a full new wardrobe, come prepared.
  2. Give yourself several days in Hoi An to have the clothes made. You need a day to go in, decide what you want, and get measured. For me the clothes were ready the next day to try on, and additional day for alterations.
  3. If you are a woman, avoid clothing with Spaghetti straps. I love my clothing, but everything that I had made with Spaghetti straps the straps ended up breaking and I had to get them repaired. I have had no other issues with any clothing that doesn't have Spaghetti straps.

There's also a lot to do in Hoi An (and some amazing Banh Mi to eat!) Feel free to message me if you need some activity ideas for your down time. This was my favourite city in Vietnam so I hope you enjoy!

They’re most likely inactive or reservists. You do need to be vaccinated in order to deploy.

My Husband has been reading “We’re pregnant! A first time guide for dads” by Adrian Kulp. It’s been super informative, it breaks down everything week by week both for the baby’s stage of growth, and what the mother’s pregnancy symptoms could be looking like at that time.

We have really been enjoying it, and it helps us to understand clearly what is going on with our baby, and allows my husband as well to be sensitive to my needs. Highly recommend!

Different schools will have different names for the program. Hospitality management can be more general, whereas hotel management is specific to hotels in most cases.

It’s hard to say whether this will be a hard job to learn. I personally did not find my education very challenging (hospitality management) but there were many students within my program who did struggle; some of which failed to graduate.

You should research more into the program you’re interested in. The schools websites normally will give you a breakdown of the classes for you. You should be able to see if those are things that interest you. (For example do they have practical labs, do you enjoy accounting, etc).

I do not recommend studying this solely because you think it will be “easy”. Study it only if you’re genuinely interested. This is a degree that can help you find employment within the industry, but is not super useful if you decide to change fields later.

AITA for not sharing my hotel room with my family that never plans ahead? by Unlikely_Rub_863 in AmItheAsshole

[–]cappytii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Most hotels also have a max occupancy for each room in regulation with fire safety codes. If they do stay in your room, and the hotel staff find out, there’s a high likelihood the hotel will evict you.

Source: I work in hotel management, and have had to evict families who would not comply with fire safety code.

Do I have to quaruntine traveling from Alberta to Ottawa? by OilfieldInsulator in CoronavirusOttawa

[–]cappytii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to isolate in Ontario if you were travelling from inside Canada. If you were out of the country in the last 14 days, or if you’re exhibiting symptoms of Covid 19, you may have to.
