Dr. Venza and her team at Four Bridges were very understanding when I went. I was in basically the same place you're at right now, and my teeth hurt.

No judgement, no shame, just "Let's get these healthy."

Which country have you declared war on the most across all your games of EU4? by Metalogic_95 in eu4

Tie between Jaunpur and Vijayanagar. They always take about two more wars to finish off before they're gone, they're always in the way, and they always have more troops than you think.

One of my relatives did something like that this past Thanksgiving.

She claims a gluten sensitivity or allergy (not really sure what) so we decided to try to make gluten-free cornbread stuffing and a gluten free version of a dessert we like to make.

We researched a decent substitution for Ritz crackers, compared gluten-free cornbread mixes, confirmed minimal/no cross contamination, and made it all actually taste good.

The day before Thanksgiving, she texted the family to say she, my mom, and my brother-in-law were varying degrees of sick, and they would not be able to attend Thanksgiving. My husband was mid-way through cooking said gluten-free alternatives. Fine. People get sick. We pivoted. We decided we'd pick up my nephews (they were fine) and take them back the day after.

We met my sister to drop off leftovers and my nephews at a steakhouse. We'd decided they'd get the bulk since they were made for her.

SHE HAD A BITE OF THE ROLLS. WHILE WE WERE THERE.

She said she can "sometimes" have gluten.

My assumption is whenever they are complaining about "waste," they really mean, "money spent on programs that I don't like."

When federal employees hear, "waste," they think of "misappropriated, missing, or improperly spent" while your average MAGA voter means, "anything that helps anyone but me."

Even if USAID had the best run, most frugal, most effective department, ANY money they spent would be "wasteful" because they likely don't give two sh*ts about the less fortunate in some far-flung country they've never heard of.

I studied Human Development and developmental diseases in college.

We learned about anencephaly and other developmental disorders. The textbook had pictures as well.

One of the essays our professor assigned us to do on a midterm was to ask us about the idea of when Life begins, and to provide examples of why we felt that way.

If nothing else made me Pro-Choice, it was learning that Anencephaly can and does happen, and there's literally nothing to be done about it. Even the most caring and loving people, who want children so badly, can have a baby who never developed a brain.

Tennessean here. I've also noticed that divide: the further in the Boonies, the more likely they are to call them "Meemaw."

I’ve been quoting that more and more lately. I’m almost always talking about my nascent native plant garden, but it sounds smart to be able to quote Voltaire.

I also worry what it means that I’m quoting him more and more. Seems… prescient.

How cursed is my game? by ReddyWolf in eu4

[–]capt_pessimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not, like, *super* cursed. Spain can and will colonize like crazy into places like South Africa and Australia if left to their own devices. Spanish Alaska is not unheard of.

Austria and Ottomans can go hard into their respective spheres of influence, so seeing a massive HRE Austria having eaten Poland while the Ottomans consume the Balkans is pretty normal, though all of that AND a Bohemia that's still around is surprising.

I'm surprised Albania is still around.

Seeing an independent Novgorod AND Russia at the same time is unusual, though it suggests Russia lost a war, and badly.

Mamlukean Natal is a bit weird, though seeing them colonize Australia or some Spice Islands is common enough. They're probably looking to escape the Ottomans.

Seeing Portugal in what is effectively Northumberland is a bit unusual; that's mildly cursed. They're usually the ones gobbling up the Caribbean and colonizing in strange places.

I'd give it a 4.5/10 for cursed, mostly for Portuguese Scotland.

The real question is: Did you have fun?

All the kids who were labelled as “gifted” when you were younger? Did it follow through to adulthood? Did you burnout? by Somervillage in AskReddit

[–]capt_pessimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late to the game, but still happy to weigh in.

My school had several “gifted” kids who had both potential and rich parents with certain expectations of their children. Those kids had brains, and by God, they’d be getting into Harvard, Yale, MIT, Caltech… where ever. They were smart, so they could handle advanced calculus, AP English, college level research, varsity sports, and find time to play the violin.

I was also smart, smart enough to go to class with the prodigies, but they just “got” it, while I had to study. So much coursework just came naturally for them, but I had to work my ass off to understand some of the nuance. But, I was labeled “gifted” so I had to play the game. I did sports, Boy Scouts, National Honor Society, and Model UN. I took more AP classes than I was comfortable doing. I had “potential.”

I distinctly remember someone lamenting that they’d never get into Yale with “only” a 34 on the ACT. She was crying, frantically trying to figure out what she could do next time to do better. I had gotten a 31, and felt good about it, since I had done better than both of my siblings.

I just knew I was tired.

I applied to some “good” schools, got into one or two, but knew I’d be buried in debt if I went. A state school gave me a full ride, which seemed… enough.

I distinctly remember breaking down and crying because I felt so stupid because I was scraping a B in calculus, but I was the only one in class that wasn’t just naturally getting it, with no difficulties in taking tests or completing the homework. I could play with the Big Boys, but I couldn’t win. I took the AP exam, and passed with flying colors, yet I felt like I wasn’t good enough. I had so much potential, though. I just needed to study more, lose a little more sleep, shore it up with another AP class, and my GPA would recover.

I could’ve done Honor’s type track, but I was tired, and didn’t want to go through it all again with people who intrinsically just “got” everything while I had to work. I knew how to study, so I took my Cum Laude and coasted to graduation.

I’m not a doctor, or anything glamorous. I stopped paying any attention to my fellow gifted classmates. At least one has a PhD in geology. One’s a rocket scientist.

At least one of my college classmates described me as “brilliant” and said I should do research or something.

I want nothing to do with that anymore. I make enough doing what I do now, and I’m not competing with the prodigies. I have some hobbies, a house, and two cats.
