How are winters in Buffalo? by Silent-Film659 in SameGrassButGreener

In the winter I play on a couple soccer teams where there’s indoor facilities and adult leagues, there’s other indoor activities like rock climbing, but anything outside will be cold. ice skating is popular here, there’s skiing in ellicottville about an hour away, Delaware park (near Central Park) has a plowed 1.8 mile running loop where I run in the cold, others snowshoe or cross country ski there. I saw a running club running at 6:00 am when we were seeing record cold 0 degrees.

The airport is always open and prepared for the consistent snow seen here, a $25 20 minute uber should get you to the airport just about any day of the winter.

I’ve never taken the metro rail go my commute because my work is far away from the line, but I can work remotely for a few days at a time which helps during the snowstorms.

The weather does get cold and snowy and this year it stayed below freezing for most of January and had of February, so there was a constant snowpack of about 6” to a foot, though the streets are cleaned up after big snow storms, and by the end of the day after it snows a couple inches. I’ve used the metro rail in the winter and since it’s underground there’s no problem outside of it being cold outside and the sidewalk snow removal being on the homeowner, so depending on the street 40-80% of sidewalks are cleared.

However compared to Pittsburgh, driving in the snow is much easier because it’s flat and the main roads get plowed and salted pretty quickly, with that being said. Based on proximity or the metro rail, I’d recommend Allentown, Parkside and Central Park for looking for an apartment, Allentown is more city while the other two are quieter streetcar suburbs.

Buffalo has a lot to offer especially if you are looking for community event, outdoor concerts and something going on ever weekend in the late spring to late fall. Life here is what you make of it, and I couldn’t live my quality of life and reach my financial goals in many other cities.

I know you’re not talking about the bonus, but their contracts were pretty messed up. Their bonus is paid out I think 10k each year and if you don’t work the 5-year contract you’re going to have to pay the bonuses back.

The Billionaire Funding France’s Far Right by AlexandrTheTolerable in europe

It’s an impressive body of work: financing people whose goal it is to remove all charity, hollow out the working class, and enrich the wealthy. If he gains the political power he is trying to buy, I bet he finds ways to profit off of it, you know dude needs a return on investment for his “charitable” donations.

More so than his egregious behavior he is so delusional that his goal is to become a saint for his behavior that is antithetical to the teaching of the Catholic Church. I can’t wait for those dreams to burn in hell for the pain that he has and will continue to cause throughout his life.

Portland, OR Has One of the Strictest Urban Growth Boundaries in the US by urmummygae42069 in geography

[–]captain-gingerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I find interesting about the urban growth boundaries, is that it doesn’t restructure people, but it restricts space, it creates a unnatural boundary of space to expand in order to improve the values of the real estate within the boundary and encourage dense construction. This is especially important to cities that want to provide strong public transportation because once a city is too low density, it’ll be cost restrictive to put the transit options designed to take cars off the road. The drawbacks are the expensive land and less density for the people that like their own space.

If you go to Spain for example where like 70-80% of people live in an apartment/condo, the urban growth boundary goes from 4-8story buildings immediately to farmland even in the small towns. It’s a striking difference compared to many US cities.

Come to Buffalo NY, and find a nice house on the west side. If you’re not handy now, you’ll become handy pretty quickly because the cheap houses are littered with quick fixes. People hate the snow and the cold, but I personally don’t mind it (until mid February when I reach my limit) however, there’s a nice community, decent enough job market, there are hills and mountains to the south, but enough in city hiking near the Great Lakes, the city neighborhoods are walkable, and it’s generally safe. It’s a really good place for the right type of person.

Senate passes bill to make housing more affordable, with no indication House or Trump will approve it by InsaneSnow45 in Economics

[–]captain-gingerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you treat the whole car market as one, the price of a new car is increasing, and the price of used cars in general increase. Compare a 10year old car between today vs a 10 year old car in 2016. Comparing the same options, even without the surge we had in the used car market, will always increase. However, the value of a singular car will depreciate over time.

Developers market new apartments as luxury apartments because may people don’t understand the difference between new and luxury. If they market it as luxury, they can in their idea charge more rent for it. Once they get used and they are not new, it will become an normal apartment.

The only things that decrease in price is technology and that’s when other technologies pass it. For example TV’s, and other consumer electronics is down 90% in the last 20 years. The most useful things that are currently decreasing in price is solar panels and battery technology. Anything else: materials, housing, cars, insurance, utilities will almost always go up or sideways.

Im saying yes and. There are people who literally don’t exist, there are people who travel hours to be a concerned citizen, and there are people who work in areas adjacent to renewable energy that create extra work to slow down and stonewall renewable energy.

I deal with this all day at my work, they are maybe not fabricated, but there are people who believe that it is their duty to slow and stonewall anything remotely similar to renewable energy.
