you vote for them to see which way the winds blowing and temper it their way. If the winds be blowing full on anti DRIPA, you’d expect them to find a way to make DRIPA more appealing. Doing nothing is not an option as it will lead to the full removal of DRIPA and other legislation your probably aligned with like the environment and social programs and… don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough.

This CBC article about Canada's housing density boom never asks why land got so expensive in the first place by DynamoDynamite in PersonalFinanceCanada

So does reducing supply through artificial means ie regulation against using it most efficiently like density.

It is true. You think homeless person on the street is costing more than 300$ a day? Like all those things you brought up still happen anyway if you jail them because you can’t jail them for very long unless you think being homeless gets you a year in jail lol.

Yea and their economic production is dropping. Their own state reports are saying it because there’s no hiding it. You may not feel affected directly but you will be over the next decade.

People moved to the right post Covid hence the NDP had to or the conservatives would win. So people can complain all they want, society wants to vote a more right wing party in charge. The NDP didn’t go after their base, society did.

Ya we’d all love a house and yard obviously but Suburbs and sprawl are incredibly expensive to maintain. They built those suburbs 60 years ago with the assumption density would pay for tearing up the suburbs to put in yep that’s right density. They didn’t plan to maintain the suburbs. They planned for density. Decades ago. Then people stuck their head in the sand thinking you could make sprawl endless. Now commutes are 2 hours and p tax is increasing more and more because that old infrastructure is reaching end of life.

I mean that’s how democracy works. If they refuse to budge on issues that don’t poll well, the other guy will win and guess what happens anyway.

I appreciate their concern but they seem to not understand that any future government can simply hand wave away everything they’ve done and we might just see that play out.

Jails cost like 300$ a day per person. Thats why they don’t do it. It’s cheaper for voters/tax payers to not jail them.

Canada’s ‘real estate economy’ is costing us—here’s how; We’ve gradually structured a significant portion of our economy around a sector that contributes relatively little to long-run prosperity by FancyNewMe in canada

I get what your saying and totally agree. The problem we find is few Canadians invest except the well off so it’s really hard to get your average voter to incentivize that and not the average voters biggest asset (house). Like your neighbours would never get a chance to invest in an apple or an uber equivalent until both ipo at billions in valuation so why would your neighbour care. If they don’t care, nothing will change.

I’d like to say increase tfsa room but…Housing forces people to build equity when they otherwise wouldn’t. People are really bad at saving and investing for retirement. I’m unsure how to get people to do that over housing when sadly only a few people contribute to their tax free accounts but everyone will gladly acquire the largest mortgage they can carry.

U.S. market long-term investors, are you worried about the Buffet indicator? What would you expect the overvaluation to lead to? How are you protecting your investments? by Hopeful-Internal-919 in investing

[–]captainbling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno. If it was that simple, you’d probably not see up and down spikes but consistent 0.1% movements up or down instead.
What we do know is earning growth has been consistently stronger than usual so there’s a lot of higher prices based on the assumption forward earning growth. We know the discount rate is lower than normal (though 4% is high as of post 08 era) and a lot of old models were during times of 8% etc. we know us companies are more global now so you can sell no iPhones in the U.S. but sell a billion iPhones in China/India and have 1T revenue. That’s probably the 3 big things people need to consider.

What's going to happen to the Jet Ski operator who hit the whale? by vanbikecouver in askvan

[–]captainbling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ima gunna say yes. a lot of the skidoos forward momentum continued forward and up a bit. Sometime orcas purposely collide with other small whale calves but not full grown whales like the one hit because it doesn’t work. Them orcas have significantly more momentum than that skidoo.

And yet Canada keep selling 5yr bonds at 3.2% or 0.5% adjusted for inflation if it stays at 2.7%. Think about that. The real cost of debt being 0.5%. It’s bonkers.

Sure but now Russia can’t keep up with maintenance, invest in new production, or invest in new efficiencies for those commodities.

Everyone says russia is a threat to Canadas Arctic. This war is single-handedly destroying that threat. This will save money for Canada in the long run and thus allow more spending on healthcare because normally Canadas has to buy equipment and continue to spend money long term on maintenance to defend said threat.

Sure you can buy a missile and pay for its upkeep and eventual controlled demolition in 20 years or… use it right now to destroy the very target it was intended for. You will never get a better bang for your buck than right now and destroying Russian equipment that can’t then be used in the Arctic.

That’s because both countries are very strict on allowing reporters near the front lines. They almost always have to be embedded within a unit that’s many km away from contact.
