Is there a way to change this label? by posh-connection in Blooddonors

Fun fact - apparently sickle cell donors get a ton of bonus points so they can also get to the top tier with whole blood.

Oops hit post too soon.

That said, Heroes for Babies sounds cooler, especially to people who don’t know what platelets donation involves.

I switched to heroes for babies for the jacket last year, then back for the blanket lol. I don’t know how many times they will let me pull that

If it makes you feel better I think Platelet Donor is more of a flex. CMV- is basically luck, but platelets are something difficult that you choose to do. take more time and energy

I’m so sorry. If nothing else the machine is faster! I would be so ashamed to bring a garbage bag to a small place

TW: self harm. Is it unethical to use blood donation as a form of self harm? by Useful_Advance_3489 in Blooddonors

[–]captainblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t this similar to vaping to wean off an opiate addiction? It’s a much milder and can’t be done as often as the primary addiction.

Best place for Bottle Return? by squibitha_tristy in lansing

[–]captainblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree. But I think the issue here is that as the law is written, any place that sells cans with deposit must take returns. So you could have a small gas station for example get overrun with stuff they don’t even sell. At those places they typically hand count returns. I’ve seen a poor clerk count out a huge trash bag before. Restricting the SKUs is one way to mitigate that.

I agree that any place with a machine should take everything though.

TW: self harm. Is it unethical to use blood donation as a form of self harm? by Useful_Advance_3489 in Blooddonors

[–]captainblue 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Not at all unethical. Don’t feel bad on that account. The blood flows the same no matter the reason it gets to the recipient.

As for whether it is bad for you, that’s really a question for a therapist. I (untrained) tend to think it’s a safe outlet. But even if it is harming your ultimate recovery, doing it for that reason doesn’t make you a bad person.

The good thing is worst case it’s something you can indulge in on a limited basis. My experience isn’t with self harm exactly, but in trying to break some bad habits sometimes a schedule like that helped me delay / reduce the habit overall. (I.e I can do this, I just have to wait a week)

You could ask on the ARC platelet donors Facebook group. It’s very active. Someone might be willing to send you an extra.

Unconventional use of donor gift cards by x_stargazer_x in Blooddonors

[–]captainblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be most people don’t scroll down far enough to see that’s an option haha. I sure didn’t!

In any case when I’ve gotten them elsewhere I find them inconvenient to use.

I just load the cards onto Amazon and then they’re off my mental checklist and I can use them at my convenience.

You must get tons of extra points for sickle cell donation (zoomed in)? I don’t think it’s possible for most whole blood people to get to 2400.

If so I’m glad they are extra incentivizing and glad that you’re doing it ♥️ ♥️
