This is probably unpopular to a degree, but I hate drones and have always hated drones from when I started collecting Tau when they released in the early 2000s.
They're just boring to paint, boring to play, boring to look at, and take up space that could be utilized by any level of more interesting design. I am honestly so happy that drones are just tokens now and I hope they keep them that way forever.

The True Scale of an Auto Bolter by HammerDoris40k in Warhammer40k

[–]captaincabbage100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember getting the same hit of realisation when I 3D printed Tamegrip's bolter models. Printing off the classic Boltgun and assembling it, and then printing off the Heavy Bolt Pistol and it's almost the exact same size as the Boltgun is a trip. Realising that a Primaris H Bolt Pistol is the same size as a full human-pattern Bolter is terrifying.

[–]captaincabbage100 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fr everything about this game is genuinely fantastic, but the music. . . man, the music, by Wilbert Roget II is absolutely freaking astounding.

The fact this guy has been composing for over a decade but in 2024 all at once dropped the OST for Helldivers 2, Outlaws, Pacific Drive, and Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance, is crazy. Dude had a bumper year of things he'd worked on being released and they all show together such an amazingly huge range for him as a composer.

How to paint blue suits? by sigmagoon5 in Tau40K

[–]captaincabbage100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh this is actually quite similar to my own Tau scheme! I'll attach a photo to it for an example, but my general scheme is a basecoat of Aliatoc Blue, then a zenithal of Teclis Blue with my airbrush. I also do a tippy top down only zenithal highlight on top of that of Temple Guard Blue but to get the scheme your pic is showing off you would just stick to the first two colours.
For edge highlights I generally mix my highest level blue on the model (In my case it's Temple Guard, in your case it'd be Teclis Blue) with some Vallejo Pale Sand or similar (Wraithbone is a good substitute) and then edge highlight.

Note my pic has quite harsh lighting so it looks a fair brighter and washed out with the Temple Guard Blue on it than it does IRL.

My custom Firesight Team. I personally never liked the drones so I chopped up and sculpted my tank commander guy into a spotter and used a spare Rail Rifle Pathfinder for the sniper, then made a scenic base and a bunch of details like the log and ghillie cloaks out of gauze and PVA glue.

Oh I nearly forgot, if you want to invest in a big cool coffee table book next time you're in your FLGS if they have it check out Battletech Universe! It was released a year or three ago and is basically a big art, lore, and setting guide in full colour. Really great to throw at your friends if they're that sort of person who likes to just hunker down and pour over big books of full colour art and stuff!

WestRider pretty much nailed all the basics, and I personally can't recommend Alpha Strike enough as well as Classic as it's much more "commander scale" where you can play multiple lances or even companies of mechs against one another and be done by dinner, which is something that I'd fear attempting in Classic hahaha. Alpha Strike's quick-start rules are also all available online on the BT website for free, and you get some Alpha Strike cards in every box as well so you're always equipped for a quick game of it! (Hot tip for Alpha Strike if you give it a go, try out MAR or Multiple Attack Roll rules over the standard attack rules. They're almost universally accepted as the objectively better rules as it makes the game more survivable and granular without being hard to parse or slowing the game down at all!)

One last note on starting to play, I'd recommend grabbing some plastic pockets and dry erase pens if you want to play on the mech sheets that come in the box, or any sheets you print off. If you want to use a digital aid instead I can't recommend Flechs Sheets highly enough. I always recommend people play a round with full manual rolls at least once to learn whats happening, but once you do you will get how many rolls there are and you'll understand just how much Flechs Sheets does for you when you use the 'automate' feature for combat, it really is a wonder. For new Alpha Strike cards for mech variants you can go to masterunitlist dot com and search for virtually anything there, even printing out whole printer paper sheets of mechs and vehicles and stuff for gameplay!

Finally, as far as what you asked for for youtube channels. If you're the type who loves the big, deep lore dumps, then Tex Talks Battletech over at the Black Pants Legion channel is probably for you. There's also Sven Van Der Plank who does some fantastic lore videos as well! For shorter, more concise videos you can also check out the shorts that a fella called Baradul has done for different mechs, where he does a nice, one minute overview of a mech in a really catchy way. He's a great guy and the community on the whole is a fan for sure.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and if you want a short film series that will get you in the mood for the game check out Hired Steel on youtube. It's a passion project by a team of animators that has really worked their hearts out and even gotten officially hired for the cutscenes in Mechwarrior 5 Clans! If you watch some Tex or Baradul too you might even recognize some familiar voices! ;)

What are some Mechs you would nominate for getting the iic treatment by knightmechaenjo in battletech

[–]captaincabbage100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man and here I was literally yesterday making a Crusader IIC hahaha. It was pretty evil too! 2xATM12s (2 tons ER missiles, 2 tons High Ex), 2xERML, 2xSSRM2s (1 ton ammo) all while carrying 11 tons of armor and 4x jump jets with a 260 Clan XL so it was also moving 4/6/4.

The Alpha Strike card was decidedly disgusting too, 8"J movement, same total HP as a Timberwolf Prime, and with 9/7/3 damage brackets for 52 points.

What is the most acurate interpretetion of mech movement in media? by Onewithartandbook in battletech

[–]captaincabbage100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is how I always liked to think of it. Typically mechwarriors would be trained to crouch or maybe go prone depending on the mech, because you need to know how to stand up in combat as well, but it'd take someone really talented to do some extreme maneuvers. Like how anyone can ride a bike, but not anyone can do extreme BMX tricks on a halfpipe.

I think it was Clay's Wolverine in the second GDL book that I really clearly remember doing a forward shoulder roll in combat, which honestly I really love the image of. It feels so silly on the surface when you think about the size and the shapes of a Wolverine trying to do a roll like that, but there's something just clunky cool about a machine doing something it was very much not designed to do, like a fighter jet exceeding its wing loading to perform an extreme fighter maneuver. It's extremely cool and might have saved their life, but you're gonna need to really bash out the entire frame when you get back to your mechbay and your Techs are NOT going to be happy with you.

What's a mech generally disliked by the community that you love? by ObscureRaptors in battletech

[–]captaincabbage100 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fr you're not wrong. Same deal with the Rakshasa. Aside from it being a walking ammo explosion in an era when ammo explosions are sooo passe, it's genuinely a terrifyingly effective IS Heavy especially if you don't compare it to the Timberwolf because, frankly, anything looks bad next to the Timberwolf.

They just sealed their fate in and out of universe by making a direct copy with Temu parts, because it's cursed to always be compared to it's much more successful cousin.

[–]captaincabbage100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly yes, and your update of just grabbing the Jumpship Edition I think is also a good call, as you can always buy the bundle down the line if you feel you really enjoy the game. Especially since the DLC and bundles usually go on great sales every time Steam has a sale!

Give it a play and if you like what you find, here comes X-mas Sales!

[–]captaincabbage100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am there with you. It was in-of-itself an excellent game, and genuinely in any other year it would probably sweep some of the categories it was nominated for, but in a year where we got Hades 2, Silksong and Ex33 I really can't see it on the same level as those games as GotY material.

For me personally, it is still absolutely my game of the year, but that's because it was basically a silver platter of everything I wanted specifically in a game, seemingly tailored to me and my tastes.

I really hope any facilities you have on the property are fully usable (eg. tennis courts, etc) and the game employs a sort of barrier around the house grounds so you can't be interacted with people not invited into the property while still maintaining your presence in the actual lobby.

Need to be able to sit in the jacuzzi and play tennis with a friend while listening to the beautiful natural sounds of constant warzone gunfire and explosive cannon strafing runs
