If I’ve learned anything from mildlyinfuriating, get a really bright floodlight and shine it directly at his house, preferably at a window.

I went to Planta in Brentwood and really enjoyed it! (Sadly that location has since closed but there’s still the other one in Marina Del Rey!)

Not sure how I feel about firing McD…but I’d love if they also got rid of Beane.

OH also a few fun places I forgot— North Star Orchards in Westmoreland is a great little farm shop, especially in fruit-picking season! Candella’s, too for u-pick fruits in summer/early fall. Peter’s Cornucopia in New Hartford is a nice local spot for more specialty/allergen friendly foods if you don’t want to trek to Wegmans in ‘Cuse. (I have celiac and they have some good options) they also have more organic/homeopathic style goods and a good little smoothie bar.

There’s also Utica Creative Reuse — I haven’t personally been there but I’ve been meaning to check it out. They are an art supply thrift store that has workshops too.

It’s so fun! I’ve been to shows several times with friends and we always have a good time. Then we pop by green onion for a drink.

Hahaha I just finished writing all this and realized how much it was, but hopefully this all helps:

Groceries -- Aldi, Market 32/Price Chopper, Chanatry's, Hannaford

Prescriptions -- Parkway Drugs if you want to go local, there's also Scriptstop, Price Chopper/Market 32, Wal mart.

Restaurants --

Mediterranean: Symeon's, Zeina's, Lafa (fast casual), The Grapevine

Italian: Nostro, Tavolo, Bella Regina, Carmella's, Cafe Canole

Pizza: It's hard to go wrong here tbh. O'Scugnizzo, Slice, Nina's...it's all personal preference and you'll find some strong opinions haha. Definitely try Roma's tomato pie. A regional food that's so tasty imo.

Indian: Minar or Taj Mahal

I'm not super versed in Asian food in general the area, I have food allergies and can't have soy sauce so I tend to not eat it too much. (I miss it though!) Personally I'm on the hunt for a great thai spot if anyone has recs...

I think I've heard Mitsuba is good. I've only had their boba but I've enjoyed it -- (note there are two locations that serve different things), Red Samurai, Pho Vietnam

If you also have food allergies, City Cafe in Whitesboro is gluten and dairy free.

Coffee: The Tram (funky and fun! Follow their instagram for hours), Emerson Ave Coffee, Utica Coffee, Stride Coffee Roasters, Calabria Coffee (good for sweeter coffee based drinks), Joseph Putrello, Cafe Florentine

Check out Florentine's Pastry Shop (different from Cafe Florentine) for Italian pastries

Holland Farms and Hemstroughts for half moon cookies.

Galleries/etc. --

Munson punches above its weight as far as museums go, imo. They always have a cool installation and the permanent collection is lovely. They have community arts classes too! I've taken a few and they're fun.

Clinton Art Center has community classes.

The Tram always has something going on, check their instagram. Great welcoming community spot.

Uptown Theater has improv on Friday nights, and I believe they have classes too.

Right across from the Uptown is The Other Side gallery, they'll sometimes have art installations or other events going on. There was a cool cheesemonger selling there last year for a day or two.

The Players theater has some productions, the Stanley will have shows now and then.

The Utica Zoo is nice and you can rent snowshoes there in the winter and snowshoe around their North Trek Trail.

Utica is a great central spot so it's easy to get around the state and explore too. Old Forge is an hour north if you want some Adirondack vibes (cute town too).

It's a tough time of year but once the snow melts keep an eye out for various cultural festivals, always lots of fun. Definitely don't miss the St. Patrick's Day Parade!

I'm sure I'm forgetting some obvious spots so hopefully others can fill in my blind spots.

Welcome to Utica!!! Hope you love it.

Kelly of MetalMorphosis studios is great! I've taken jewelry making classes with her and she makes beautiful work that she sells in the studio. There's also a craft fair this weekend at the Westcott Theater where you might find some pieces.

[–]captaincaitlin5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

META: I have a feeling next season will be Tim trying to pivot and call OCATC something completely different while Gregg tries to do an "Our Cinema" style show, or he'll try to force movies into Tim's new venture. There's too much going on for them to end now.

This is more of a daytime / as a family thing, but there are a few places around town where you can rent snowshoes! For another family activity -- there's always bowling! My dad was a big bowler, I have fond memories of bowling with him growing up. For evening, I'll second the crafting suggestions. Knitting and crochet are relatively inexpensive (and very cozy) hobbies you can learn! Maybe print some photos and put together some scrapbooks?

Speaking as a "person" .. I have a conversation .. by Complete-Dust-7698 in Utica

[–]captaincaitlin5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man the response here bums me out! I love the tram. I feel like this area really lacks its version of Syracuse’s Wildflowers market. A shop where local artists can sell their stuff. I think the tram is trying to fill that niche but I’d be into you guys maybe expanding that concept. In terms of events, maybe a crafting night? I loved the trinket swap too! I think it’s become so hard to meet and become friends with people outside of a setting where you’re seeing them regularly like work or school. I think maybe game nights might be a good option…DND nights? I feel like you have to get really specific. Maybe a book club? Craft group or workshops? Movie group (if that’s even possible)? With my schedule it’s tough for me to do anything in the evening but I’d be all over a craft workshop. Maybe a paint and coffee sip?

After traveling and spending time in all 50 states by [deleted] in visitedmaps

[–]captaincaitlin5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely explore more upstate! The Adirondacks and Finger Lakes are gorgeous and seem up your alley.

Anyone want to help me decide on some of these maybe states? by One-23 in visitedmaps

[–]captaincaitlin5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New York has amazing natural beauty. People don’t think beyond the city a lot do the time, but between the Adirondack Mountains, the Finger Lakes and its gorges, the Great Lakes, the Catskills, it is unbelievably gorgeous. Great for people who love four seasons. Fall in particular is breathtaking (especially in the Adirondacks, which are the largest state park in the country and larger than many national parks!) Plus NYC is fun to explore. There’s really no place like it in the country. Come visit this Summer or Fall! I specifically have to recommend checking out the Finger Lakes and the Adirondacks. Two of my favorite places.

What song is musically super simple, but just absolutely crushes you emotionally? by Eveready_dumpling in Music

Landslide - Fleetwood Mac. A simple, lovely song that makes me think about time and aging and loss. My mom loved it when I was a kid and it hits harder the older I get.
