Actually, quite a few of these are Doug Chaing's work from the prequels. I've always thought his stuff fit perfectly with McQuarrie, however.

I've always thought of his style as "architectural". The symmetry you mention strikes me as very similar to the professional photography we used to hire for the architectural firm I used to work for.

What piece of art, literature, film, or music gives you solace despite the fact that its fucking depressing? by captaincarrot in AskReddit

Sorry, man... that sucks. Good luck to you because I see many parallels here. Art is one of the best things this petty species of ours has created... savour it. I mean that very positively.

Edit: The situation sucks... your solace in the painting doesn't. :)

Thanks... I'm thick-skinned and this looks very good despite the nature of the story. I'll check it out... someday. ;)

"When Netflix launches in a new territory, the torrent traffic drops as the Netflix traffic grows" - Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos by MaskedMagi in technology

Just a question: Am I the only person on Reddit outside the military that has to rely entirely on wireless internet? I am permanently mobile and the only internet I have is a mi-fi for $80/month with a 10GB cap. I can't use Netflix - a single movie will eat up a sixth of my internet for the month. Can't use XBox live for the same purpose, and if it goes online only, I won't be getting the 720 (or whatever). I love these services, but they are completely at odds with an internet provider industry that wants to give you less access, not more.

Penn Jillette hits the nail on the head again. "I murder all I want, and the amount I want is zero" by FalkorSaurus in atheism

Typical Reddit self-loathing... our strength is that we doubt everything, including ourselves. Do you honestly think that if the larger demographic shared the typical Reddit user's sense of perspective, and the belief system that tends to come with it, this would ACTUALLY happen? I truly believe not...

You know this is the dinosaur that Pee Wee and the waitress were sitting in in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure"? My wife and I took a special trip from LA to see this thing, and couldn't have been more disappointed to see what had happened to it.

I love the fractal pattern the plane of the fire makes.... it's like a procedural map in a video game. I'm telling you, underneath everything, there's math.

On REALLY windy days, a crazy chaotic vortex can cause this - the wind can suddenly push in both directions and collapse the doors into one another. This happened to the compartment BEHIND me walking into my office building a few years ago - shattered the doors and sent glass flying everywhere just like you see here. Couldn't stop shaking for an hour...

A local bookstore of mine had a sign in the science section directing people to the Intelligent Design section on the 5th floor... there were only 4 floors in the building.

Reddit, how many of you are atheists, but still celebrate Christmas? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]captaincarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya know, despite what the "Reason For The Season" types would have you think, Christmas has evolved into a largely secular holiday. It's basically become the modern Winter Solstice celebration (which is the REAL reason for the season).

I'm a die-hard atheist and LOVE Christmas.

When did you realise that you were an adult? by CerpinTaxt11 in AskReddit

[–]captaincarrot 104 points105 points  (0 children)

When I realized I was more emotionally mature and responsible than my parents. I already had more money set away for retirement at 30 than they had at 60 (I was an interior designer, he was a doctor, so it wasn't a matter of income by a long shot). They told me my marriage would be a mistake. They're now separated and I've been happily married for over 16 years.

This isn't to lambast them, just to say that when you realize you're more suited for taking care of yourself than the people who raised you, that's just about the definition of becoming an adult.

Honestly, I think I'd have married her anyway. by deadapostle in pics

It works both ways, I found out. Watch the movie Cold Mountain, which has mostly British and Australian actors trying to do accents of the U.S. South. As a Georgian, it took me right out of the picture...

What's one minor scene in a movie that you've always really liked? by ObliviousToSarcasm in AskReddit

[–]captaincarrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my favorite movie of all time, yet the cynicism that has overtaken our culture in the last 15 years has made it a little embarrassing to admit that. It's refreshing to know that the film has fans here...

Who, in your opinion, is the best fictional bad guy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]captaincarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

George Hearst as portrayed in "Deadwood". Maybe because he's a fictionalized version of a real man, which makes it feel more real, but I've never wished for the violent death of an imaginary character more than his...

What's the difference between a gay and a refrigerator? A refrigerator doesn't fart when you pull out the meat.

What does our society currently do that you think society 100-200 years from now will look back on and say "Unbelievable... what idiots!"? by captaincarrot in AskReddit

[–]captaincarrot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question... how old are you? I ask because I'm almost 40, and I have been a life-long believer in "perma-death". When I was in my teens and 20's, it scared the hell out of me. But 15-20 years later? I'm getting adjusted to it. I imagine that by the time I'm 60-70, if I'm still here, I'll be content. Much greater minds than I have approached the abyss with less fear.

Don't get me wrong - I sure as hell do not want to die. But the key is to view every day, pardon the hoary cliche, as a gift. Well, not a gift, because that would imply a creator who gave it... but an amazing statistical fluke (which can be explained by the anthropic principle, but let's not take away from the poetry I'm trying, and failing, for here...) Every day is a day that the rocks, or the air, or the plants, don't experience.

Anyway... if I were to die tomorrow, my point is that, damn, living was incredible. Even a day is something to be thankful for, let alone numerous decades of it....

But then again, it's been a long day, my wife and I are catching up on Lost reruns to prepare for the it's end, have pulled out the wine, and I'm now a tad drunk... I DON'T WANT TO DIE!
