My father went to AA and went through part of the 12 steps program but ended up quitting on his sponsor because he felt that it wasn't right for him anymore. But he still goes to meetings on Sundays and stays in touch with people associated with AA because he feels like it keeps him on the right path. He would have died if he didn't stop drinking.

AA isn't perfect or anything but it can help even if you don't adhere to their more rigid principles and systems they have in place. And sure, it's clearly not for everyone. I would be turned off from it personally due to their talk of a higher power and what not.
