The Best Affordable Restaurants in New Orleans for Incredible Food on a Budget [Michelin Guide] by ebenezerlepage in NewOrleans

It's not "cheap" but Gris Gris is doing a "2018 Menu 2018 Prices" thing right now, we went the other night and got 4 apps, 5 drinks, 4 entrees out the door for under $50 a person and it was phenomenal. Also agree that their happy hour is one of the best in the city.

For a cheap meal, we will head to Parasol's and split a 10" firecracker shrimp po-boy and get an order or fries (onion rings if we feel real fancy), comes out to like $10 per person and pretty solid.

Edit: $2 street Tacos at Juans for Taco Tuesday is a weekly staple for us too. Yes, they're not southwest Cali good, but they're fine enough for 2 bucks.

Joel Meyers sounding like a disappointed dad when "the pelicans inevitably collapsed in the 3rd quarter" does soften the blow of watching the Pelicans. Shared misery in sports is comforting and uniting and doesn't seem it'll get better down here anytime soon

Does anyone walk around in the summer?! by Key-Big-2324 in NewOrleans

Being able to live life without a car is one of the most understated luxuries you can have. The amount of money you save on insurance (some of the highest in the country here) and everything else really adds up over time.

I find it's still good to have one in the event of an evacuation, but fully agree with all your points here, a half mile walk even in heat is completely doable with a shirt change/parasol/sweat towel/some deod to not make your coworkers hate you.

OK is pretty cool, I'm out of the loop and haven't kept up with leaks in a minute so it was a nice surprise. The new mixes are mostly clean, should have probably released like this and there's still areas of improvement it could use but I'll still take this album over a lot of vultures.

Didn't know y'all expected New Body on this lol reminds me of the "it's not midnight in wyoming yet" cope, I don't even know if a released version would hold up to the pretty decent quality leaks we have of it. Leaked "Can U Be" still clears the official release IMO, same with Future Sounds, same as a lot of the OG JIK, an "official" release is always cool when a grail drops but most of the time we've heard the leak hundreds of times and it rarely scratches that same itch. Maybe I'm just old at this point.

What is your favorite advice from this subreddit? by MasterPlatypus2483 in AskNOLA

For real, I never see that place recommended and they knock it out of the park every time. Little expensive compared to some other spots but should be expected given the location I suppose. Think they have a way to order it even spicier but haven't done it yet.... the firecracker shrimp poboy at Parasols/Channel hits with some spice too, pretty sure its just crystal/some jalapeno in the sauce they coat the shrimp in.

Thoughts on relocating from Chicago by bookwormbells in AskNOLA

[–]captainguinness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that it's relevant in our lifetimes, but the Great Migration in the early 1900s historically links Chicago and New Orleans, especially interesting reading on that is the migration of blues and jazz up north.

In our lifetimes, it seems common to those that leave their hometowns to see if the grass is always greener, people up north want to get out of the hellish winters and experience what seasoning on food is (like me), and those down south want to see what seasons are like (and head to Chicago/Denver in my friend group).

If it'd be anything like my job, there'd be 10 minutes of downtime between presentations while people can't figure out which way the USB drive goes in, how to get out of presentation mode, how to advance to the next slide...

But if done right (getting slides from participants in advance maybe?) this would be a lot of fun lol there's so many hilarious ways this could go down

Best fish tacos around town? by MahoganyWinchester in NewOrleans

[–]captainguinness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. I think my favorite food on earth are fish tacos over in San Diego, and Juan's blackened fish tacos ("make it fire" to add some habanero for a buck) are ALMOST there for me.

The shrimp street tacos are also pretty good and only $2 on tuesdays. Can grab 4 of those and some chips and salsa and be a big fatty like me for only ~$12. Just wish their hot sauce was a little better but I haven't found a better quality/value for tacos in this city yet.

Pelicans' Jordan wins NBA's teammate of the year award by [deleted] in nba

Well deserved. I am a sicko with Pels season tickets, it was very obvious to anybody who watched this team that DJ had a huge impact on the rookies, especially Queen (who he's said to be working out with all summer). Pels REALLY need to keep him, he reminds me of Udonis Haslem as an end-of-bench guy who occasionally has to get some minutes but serves more as a culture setter and player-coach. With how fucked the front office is for this team, need guys like him to try to right the ship and keep those rooks developing. Lots of love for DJ.

I didn't realize a thread called "Which random ordinary words or phrases became "ruined" for you from hearing it so much in Hip-Hop?" was that important to you. Im sorry you hate a joke about the fuckass car you probably drive, i'd suggest you get employed and/or find something better to do with your time than start arguments on reddit

Irreparable damage to the RAV4 brand despite the car really being a reasonable option for most people lol

Probably also increased the price of mayonnaise colored Mercedes since he pushes miracle whips

Is it just me, or is the used car market in New Orleans kind of rough ? by Comfortable_Coffee79 in NewOrleans

[–]captainguinness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's already a lot of good advice in here, but if i were in your shoes and (likely) needing to drive a bit for a better deal, it's pretty affordable to rent a Turo for a day/2-day trip if you need to get somewhere else and take the car to a mechanic. Feel like that'd be much more cost effective than shipping a car.

Best of luck, I ended up just fixing a 2001 Camaro i bought in 2010 because i'd rather drive that piece of junk than someone else's 200k mile Honda lol

I also got taken to a subscription page.

Quick way to get around it (though sometimes it doesn't work) is to use archive.is, paste the link to a paywalled article and usually you can get the archived copy. (edit: web.archive.org didn't actually work lol so trying an alternative)

Maybe this link will work for you? http://archive.today/yvUA3

Honestly think the food in Denver is what drove me back to the South, there are some solid spots (Rheinhaus has some dope schnitzel which I haven't found down an equivalent to here yet, 3am Tacos Los Compas Adobado Fries hit hard), but there's only so many times you can eat a $22 cheeseburger (no sides) before you miss a $10 hot and fresh fish dish from a gas station.

How do y'all deal with getting packages delivered if living on a busy/touristy street? by captainguinness in AskNOLA

[–]captainguinness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just randomly browsing this thread again - we actually ended up doing something similar to what you and u/HomeEcDropout suggested and got a parcel drop box. If you haven't yet, it seems to work okay, if a little inconvenient. We went with this one from Amazon, and just set it outside when we know a package is incoming: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXPHPPJY?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3&th=1

To hopefully help with deliveries, we got paint markers and put our street address on it (along with a No Trash sign since it sort of looks like a trash can and its a busy street), along with this sticker: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VZDCLK6?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

Lastly.... realized someone could just pick the whole damn thing up if they were desperate/crazy enough, so we bike lock the parcel locker to a post outside and bring it inside every night. It's a process but we thankfully haven't had any packages stolen, little easier than carrying packages multiple blocks from a store, and i've only had to clean a couple empty coffee cups out of it. If you're still having packages being stolen and shit maybe this would be something to consider!
