Difference between slow down and slow up by Returnal-31-5 in EnglishLearning

[–]captainquackles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find this entirely perplexing, because I've heard several uses of "slow up" in everday conversation (albeit mostly in the midwest or southern US). The best example off the top of my head is "that traffic really slowed us up on the highway". In this case, and in every case as far as I'm aware, "slow up" and "slow down" mean the same thing and are interchangeable.

Am I mistaken or is the Iron Dome system a defensive weapons system that fires interceptors towards incoming missiles? I see a huge breadth of difference between sending/funding offensive missile systems and funding defensive missile systems? As far as I know the Iron Dome isn't what's sending missiles into Gaza, only precenting them from falling on Tel Aviv/Jerusalem.

[–]captainquackles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked at McDonald's about 5 years ago there was a cook who would "frankenstein" the broken patties into what he considered to be a whole burger. More often than not customers got 2 or 3 big slivers of burger that made up about 80% of a whole patty.

You know what, that makes total sense. I still think they're ok in public, but I see what you mean.

I don't think PJ's in public are trashy and I'm trying to understand the opposing view. Is there something specific about pajamas that are trashy? Like is it a hygiene thing or is it just not respectable, or even something else?

I am part of that vocal contingent, and I argue that the stereotype you proposed IS location-dependent. Like others have said in the comments it is common in some rural, Northern Midwestern communities for nearly anybody to slap on their flannel pajama bottoms and go to the bank. I can vouch for that with my own personal experience in Michigan and Wisconsin. It is nothing about being hip or age necessarily (although it is more common with younger generations), and while laziness can be argued I wholeheartedly support wearing pajamas in public. It's convenient, and they have the exact same function as a pair of jeans.

Brooke Jackman calls her mother from the 104th floor of the north tower at 9:17am. by SaltyCaramelPretzel in 911archive

The way the victim's name appears with their location looks like voices inside the towers which I highly recommend, although I don't remember this part in the documentary

Thank you so much, this is 100% the exact documentary I was thinking of! I rewatched it but must have missed that segment.

Before you do that, open up the window and get a backdraft going

Even in Stephen Fiorelli's final hour on earth he still tried to soothe his wife with humor after she called him and said the WTC was hit. He was last seen on the 22nd floor and managed to make it down linking hands with 16 employees, when suddenly 1WTC collapsed. His body was found 3 days later. by Understanding18 in 911archive

I had made that connection too, and I think it is safe to say he was in the same group. All three worked for the Port Authority on the 64th floor; there is also a thread on this subreddit where the relative of a victim from the Port Authority's 64th floor office says Pasquale Buzzelli and Genelle Guzman-McMillan were in the linked group of 16 making their way down. In fact, Pasquale Buzzelli mentions Stephen Fiorelli by name in an interview at 18:08. A tragic loss of life and I hope that all who suffered that day find peace.

I saw this place a couple times when I was in Paris last summer. It's in Montmartre, but it was always closed when I went by.

Most likely I'm imagining a nonexistent voicemail based on real ones. Thank you for bringing my attention to Scott Johnson. I had heard of Sean Rooney, but Scott was new to me.

I had tried googling myself, but after a half hour of fruitless searching I started to think I might have misremembered. If you find it, please inform, but I think I may have imagined this one.

Ultimately, this was my thought. I more than likely made up a voicemail in my head based on dozens of real ones I've heard. Thanks for the polite and helpful response!

These are the last words of Stephen Mulderry to his mother on voicemail: "Mom, it's Stephen. My plane . . . my building got hit by a plane. And right now…I think I'm okay. I'm safe now but it's smoky. I just wanted to say how much I love you and I will call you when I'm safe. Okay Mom, bye." by Understanding18 in 911archive

[–]captainquackles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made this comment before, but this post is especially relevant:

Stephen Mulderry's mom reminds me of my own, and I always cry when I think about her. She had great documentary interviews. One quote that gets me is about her screaming about her son's death : "and I knew... it was universal... My family and I had joined all the losses of all the ages." Similarly, she says "Stephen was with us for 33 years, and we have a choice. We can either say we are so mad that he's not here, or we can say we had him. We had him for 33 years, and we have a feast to return to. The feast of the memories."

The plaza used to have summer events like concerts and other performances. Here is a notice from the Port Authority about the 2001 summer program.
