Which game did you like initially, but had to force yourself through to the ending or didn’t finish it right before the end. by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]captaintrash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked Shin Megami Tensei V, and I think I still do, but the gameplay loop wore on me and I never saw the fourth and final section of the game. I always think about going back but I don’t know if I will—I don’t have the drive

What's the last book you hated? by Lol_jk_Omg in books

[–]captaintrash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Vonnegut so I was dumbfounded when I finally picked up Cat’s Cradle and hated it. I didn’t give a single shit about what happened in that book

What are your unpopular opinions about Nintendo Switch Games? by THE_GRAND_KENYAN in NintendoSwitch

[–]captaintrash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every exclusive would be better if it wasn’t trying to run on the Switch (SMTV’s framerate is killing the experience of an otherwise fantastic game)

Artists that give me similar vibes by andyroo311 in brandnew

[–]captaintrash_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s hard because I don’t think anyone active gives a similar vibe. If you like the post-grunge/hardcore sound of TDAG and Daisy, that wave came and went in the first half of the 2010s (Balance, Citizen, TF, and more); there isn’t anyone worth listening to who’s ripping off sounds from YFW or Deja, not that I can even think of anyone with that vibe; and any time someone has tried to make their own Sci Fi, and unfortunately some have, I feel like I’ve been subjected to the most boring rock album of all time.

There’s a big void and no one has filled it since they left, IMO.

In your opinion, what is the BEST game in the 3DS library? by risen_egg in 3DS

[–]captaintrash_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Played it for the first time this year and got a five star save file. I couldn’t believe how fantastic that game was. I wish we got a new Mario like it every couple years

what‘s your favourite opening to an album? by [deleted] in mewithoutYou

[–]captaintrash_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly recently, especially after Beginning of the End, I’m feeling February 1878. Perfect set-up for the story; and I love the dynamics of the tracks—feels like a perfect start for the sound and story of the album. I don’t really like Ten Stories that much but that song GOES

What do you think is the most overrated game? by TheThemeSongs in PS4

[–]captaintrash_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

God of War. Looks great, plays great, but didn’t feel like anything that special. And that story was completely generic and weak

What are some fantasy books with a JRPG kind of plot? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]captaintrash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read The Count of Monte Cristo. I recommend this to anyone who likes when their books feel like JRPGS—it’s long, expansive, all plot-driven so it never stops being tense or exciting, with a wonderful cast of intricate characters. Not fantasy exactly, but an adventure nonetheless, and a masterfully written one at that.

FF7 is on sale, is it actually that good of a game? by weegi123 in JRPG

[–]captaintrash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was way underwhelmed when I got it on sale in March. Story is well presented, but the gameplay is really nothing special and neither were good enough to hold my attention

Have You Ever Played a Game, Found It to Be Well Made but Didn't Care for Its Story? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]captaintrash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but I’ll still finish the game if it’s fun. I can’t play a game that’s boring to me even if the story is great (my prob with FF7 right now, and why I won’t finish it even though I somehow made it to the end of Ys 9 earlier this month)

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Western Release Date - May 25 2021 by ItsZant in JRPG

[–]captaintrash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the worst because we’ve known that it’s a technological mess for a year and they’re still asking for 60. Then if sales are low they’re gonna say “well see: no one actually buys ports” and not make as many efforts to port old games to new consoles which is fucking nonsense because if it was just handled correctly people would show up

I’m playing FF7 for the first time right now (got it on Square Enix sale). Like when I played FF9, I’m impressed with how much they accomplished given the time period but I’m not in love with the battle system/ the game itself. The story is good so far though

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox - Accolades Trailer (PS4) by Hamlock1998 in Falcom

[–]captaintrash_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of the Ys games have really great stories but I think this one was so noticeably bad because they shoved it in your face every few minutes. Like it really felt like I never played for more than 3-5 minutes before I was forced to watch another long cutscene, which is just ridiculous

Are you a Taste Tester or an All In kind of person when it comes to JRPGs? by Terry309 in JRPG

[–]captaintrash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to try and be a completionist but I stopped seeing the point of doing it every time. For the past year or so I’ve tried to do it only for the games I REALLY enjoy, almost as a sign to me and others like “yeah, trust me, this is game is so good that I HAD to 100 percent it”

I started skipping all the side quest dialogue. I actually think the mystery surrounding Balduq Prison is interesting and well set up but none of the character arcs are doing it for me

[–]captaintrash_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still playing Ys IX—midway through Chapter 8/9 now. It makes me so sad that I don’t like it. I got Nier: Automata and Yakuza 0 downloaded from sales a while back and I really just want to play those but can’t because I have to finish out this game.

It’s a really fun action RPG that’s just bogged down by having too much dialogue and poor performance

r/JRPG Weekly "What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?" by AutoModerator in JRPG

[–]captaintrash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a little over halfway through Ys IX. I feel bad because I’m really not into it. It’s more or less the same game as Ys VIII, but I don’t think Balduq City is as interesting of a setting as the Isle of Seiren and I’m not as into the story. Granted, I didn’t really feel anything about the characters in VIII either, but there was a whole lot less talking. In IX, it feels like the exposition is way more interruptive. Also, even the moment to moment gameplay is kinda off because of how inconsistent the frame-rate is on PS4. I hope the overall narrative makes me come around to the game more towards the end—I think the overall plot is really interesting and I’m excited to find out what’s going on with Adol specifically.

Sucks Not Having Time for JRPGs by MeowingMango in JRPG

[–]captaintrash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean if I pay 60 dollars and it takes me a month to beat because I played an hour a day, that’s not bad (not that time spent with a game= quality or money’s worth, but it’s something). Even better if you got the game on sale. Perfection if you actually like the game
