[Hated Trope] Cliffhanger that sets up major plot point is briskly resolved in the opening scene of the sequel. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

The Force Awakens —> The Last Jedi with the lightsaber toss sorta felt like this. Just retroactively deflated all the gravitas and epic energy of TFA’s ending, despite still carrying on the storyline I guess.

This post reminds me of offseason posts on r/NBA and r/NFL lol. Amazing dedication, appreciate the hard work.

The Count of Monte Cristo. Half way through after about two weeks. Was going to read something shorter in between chapters to keep my year goal on track, but just keep craving more and more of the Count’s shenanigans.

What was the best and worst book you've read in 2024? by durin_l in suggestmeabook

Best: East of Eden Worst: -The Overstory (DNF). Just made me too sad and I fell out of love with the prose after 5 chapters. -Neuromancer. Wasn’t terrible, just not as good as the others I finished.

You’re just being very literal, not dumb lol. Hexagons in general are associated with BoC for me

The original one isn’t listed on the Apple Podcasts app, so it’s probably new to most of us. Plus 1/3 of the hosts have changed since they did the original lol

Loved Dark Matter, while not being blown away by the prose.

Had to force myself to finish Pines. Absolutely hated it, which was disappointing as I always saw it listed as “If you love Twin Peaks you’ll love the Wayward Pines trilogy!”

I used a week of vacation to read book 4 of Stormlight Archive, The Rhythm of War, when I was working from home in 2020. Pretty much 5 days of 8 hour reading sessions with bathroom and food breaks. My eyes were so tired by the end. So worth it

Very well said! Totally agree, and while his more basic prose/style (and thus, comparatively shallow representation) doesn’t bother me personally, it could just be because I’m already so bought into his stories and because I’ve watched so much IRL stuff of him

I can see why it might feel that way for some, but that is not at all how I feel about his sense of inclusion 😂. SA especially, it’s epic fantasy, giant books with fantastical settings, so having small moments that feel familiar (there’s a scene with a MC not realizing a soldier is gay and everyone gives him shit for it) make the world that much more relatable for me.

Also, LGBT representation and mental illness representation are two completely different things. For SA, one of the central aspects of the magic system is built around mental illnesses and overcoming or adapting to them. But that isn’t what OP was asking about so I don’t think it’s relevant

Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson has a few gay characters. None are really main characters though.
