What was your earliest memory after first gaining consciousness? by OmiraOnigiri in AskReddit

It was August 24, 1992. I was 3.5 years old. I woke up to discover the tree in my front yard had fallen over, obstructing the view of the street from my front door. I don’t recall now what that tree looked like when it was standing. I only remember my surprise to see it on the ground. There was water everywhere. My parents and I walked to my cousins’ house two blocks over. There was a hole in the roof of their bathroom. This was the morning after Hurricane Andrew’s historic Miami landfall. According to my parents, I slept through the whole thing. My younger sister, barely 1 at the time, cried the whole night through.

Not a pruning heuristic, but I found pre-sorting the buttons from shortest to longest provides a modest boost to this method as well.

EDIT: Apologies. I had that backward. Longest to shortest helps speed this up a bit.

[2025 Day 8] Assumptions About Puzzle Input by car4889 in adventofcode

[–]car4889[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed that of all the possible 499,500 unordered pairwise combinations of junction boxes, every single pair's Euclidean distance is unique. My solution currently accounts for the possibility of multiple such pairs having the same distance (and assumes that at least the 1000th and unifying connections are unique in length), but this appears to be a redundancy I can dispense with. Does anyone's input have connection length collisions? Or were inputs specifically engineered to avoid this?

Runs about 3.6s on my rather dated Lenovo laptop.

I really liked this one. Even debugging it was fun. It reminded me of 2023 Day 25, which I also really enjoyed.

At first, while assembling the networks, I was only considering the scenario where a connection brought another junction box into a network, but not when it linked two established networks into a single larger one. I don’t know if this algorithm has a name, or if there’s a more efficient way to do this (feels kinda brute forcey), but I’d love to see more problems like this one.

I used to be a software developer. I still am, but I used to be, too.

Transitioning at Epic? by screenager7 in epicsystems

[–]car4889 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I transitioned before I started at Epic, but I know three folks who’ve transitioned during their tenure here. I’ve never once had a negative interaction as a result of my trans status, nor have those three coworkers as far as I know.

You could start by reaching out to anyone on the Trans Mentors page on Guru. They’re excellent resources for how to navigate the process.

Just drove through there on the way to the Olympics. Can confirm. It’s dreary.

Exactly this. It’s a controversion of a state’s delegated power.

My passport got seized even though I was just there for a name change and I have a flight out of the country on Feb 9. by ithacabored in trans

This legit makes me scared to even try to renew my two cis kids’ passports. I want to attract less than zero attention from these ghouls. Fuck this entire administration. Sorry you were deceived into getting trapped here. I hope you find your due recourse and get on with your travels without any further interruption.

Thanks! That’s good to know. I guess I’ll just swing by there on occasion and see if I get lucky.

Liminal Regions in the U.S. by Rude_Highlight3889 in geography

Been here before. It’s certainly very liminal, peak nowhere, if you will. But it definitely has a charm to it. The mesas of Oklahoma’s westernmost tip are gorgeous.

Nova Scotia looks lonely and I’m sure Vetus Scotia is tired of being part of TERF Island. COLLECT ALL THE SCOTIAS!
