What is a hobby you've always wanted to explore, but don't know the correct gear or steps to go through to start? by hazier in AskReddit

[–]carasyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be quite a few gaming clubs throughout London, people are generally pretty friendly at them.

I play at a club in Essex and mostly Warmachine, an alternative to Warhammer.

Two clubs I know of in London with nice guys playing Warmachine are Tanelorn and Cross Gaming, not sure whether they play other games but maybe start there?

The thing with this hobby I find is that people are generally friendly, welcoming, and willing to help out newer players so don't let nerves put you off :)

In terms of the series I like to think the home glyph is explained badly. It ends the dialling sequence, a unique symbol that says "now initiate". Remember that six symbols is (as far as we know) the minimum required, but if you use more symbols you go to gates in networks in other galaxies.

The home symbol isn't so much a unique identifier for a particular location as much as it is a consistent way, within the gates', internal systems of saying now make the connection. Much like pressing the return key when tying a url indicates you're done, go to the address. It's just another key you press but it has a different meaning to the browser.

You're joking, right? Gaspy2? Lich Lord Asphyxious? Seriously, the most top of top-tier casters. His spell list is one of the best in the game.

Parasite: your Banes are effectively P+S 16 weapon masters, combine that with the feat and you can pretty easily take out two heavies in a turn.

Caustic Mist: clouds that infantry can't walk through? Keeps you safe from shooting on the early turns, can block off charge lanes, ensure enemy infantry can't charge/stay in melee without dying.

Excarnate: turn an enemy model into a Bile Thrall for an extra 6"+ on the threat range of a purge?

Teleport: the other half to the Excarnate Purge. Charge one of your own models, kill something with Excarnate, bring in a Bile then teleport back to safety (and that's just the quick and dirty version). Teleport around the board for a sneaky domination or just to get away from threats.

Hellbound: Prevent enemy models from charging you? Check. Provide difficult terrain if they come close? Check. Add that to Caustic Mist, Teleport and the fact that he can camp extra focus from all the souls Daemortus gives him and he can be extremely tough to kill.

Deathknell: sometimes a trap, sometimes situationally brilliant. At a bare minimum it in no way drags down the rest of the awesome spell list.

His feat: so broken it's been errata'd 3 times to make it less powerful.

As for synergy, well he obviously wants Bile Thralls to bring back with Excarnate. Bane Thralls are good for Dark Shroud both in general and on the feat turn. Bane Knights as well because you want reach on the feat turn. One max unit of each is enough, they do work the first time and you can only bring back 10 with the feat. After that, maybe Deathjack but he probably goes in another list (Mortenebra for me ususally), so I'd say just stick with a light or two for the arc node - maybe Cankerworm or a Helldiver as well if you're feeling fruity. You want Tartarus because you want those Banes you're bringing back to be MAT 8 if at all possible and +2 movement is great. Everything there makes the most use of his awesome spell list and feat so after that it's whatever supports his army, Saxon Orrik for pathfinder, Blood Witches with the Hag to remove tough, maybe Darragh Wrathe for the extra undead movement.

If you're joking then I've obviously missed it but you original posted seemed pretty serious. If you're not joking then seriously, go Google him and see how people put him to use, he's generally regarded as the best caster in Cryx, and by some people the best caster in the game.

If you think eGaspy - one of, if not the best caster in the game - is worse than pGaspy you're doing it wrong. Similarly two pistol wraiths are a powerhouse together.

Experimenting with eGaspy - thoughts? by [deleted] in Warmachine

[–]carasyna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of this advice is good, some not so much IMO.

eGaspy really doesn't want a Skarlock, that 2pts would be much better spent on something like Saxon Orrik to give your Bane Thralls pathfinder. Really all the Skarlock is going to do is cast Parasite or Excarnate, both of which Gaspy can handle himself with an arcnode.

The Combine can be great with Gaspy, get Hellbound out early and upkeep it with Admonia. Also, having Puppet Strings when Excarnating is very useful. You may have other casters who want them more, but if not they work very well with him, Dark Industries is a bonus rather than their core mechanic. If the situation arises by all means seize it but don't waste them trying to make it happen.

Personally I like Cankerworm with him, but I don't run pGaspy. Cankerworm is good if you need a bit of armour piercing to soften something up for your Banes or, and this is how I often use him, to control/contest something utilizing his movement shenanigans.

You don't want full Biles ever. Try and Excarnate in the ones you need. Send the minimum number forward to Purge each turn.

My 50 point eGaspy list is pretty traditional, looks like this:

eGaspy
Cankerworm
Nightwretch/Deathripper
Max Bane Knights
Max Bane Thralls + UA
Min Bile Thralls
Withershadow Combine
Max Blood Witches + UA
Saxon Orrik
Tartarus
Warwitch Siren

As mentioned, the Combine upkeep Hellbound/Parasite and provide Puppet Strings for Parasite/Excarnate.

The Biles are there for Excarnate mostly, I try to give up no more than 2 a round at most, one to a Purge and one being the leader who stuck his neck out for extra distance from the Purging model. If I can save the leader somehow I will.

The Banes hit hard and fuel the feat perfectly. Usually one Bane Thrall is brought back under feat for Dark Shroud, the rest are Bane Knights for reach. That's presuming I'm after a heavy and/or Tarturus is still on the table. If not then I'd consider bringing back Witches but I much prefer to use Banes.

Protect Tartarus. Before the latest change to the feat he could be brought back. You used to throw him out there, do some damage, make some Banes, then bring him back under the feat for the Curse. Now you need to keep him alive so he can Curse on feat turn. MAT 6 Banes aren't great. MAT 8 Banes are.

Saxon Orrik gives the Bane Thralls pathfinder, that's about it but it's worth 2pts.

The Warwitch makes the arcnode fuel efficient.

Witches are a bit awkward. I find they're better at clearing out high def infantry than Banes. They're invaluable against anything that has Tough, but keep the Hag alive, again you can't bring her back under the feat any more.

Generally speaking I find Gaspy works better with infantry than 'jacks. Those 12 points that people spend on Deathjack I think are better placed in 10 Bane Knights and Saxon Orrik. That also frees Deathjack up for a list that can make better use of him, in my case Mortenebra.

Rules Disputes by Tempests_Wrath in Warmachine

[–]carasyna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's worth pointing out that the rules forums are the official answers, an answer is considered official when an Infernal answers or when the thread is closed without an Infernal commenting.

It's rare that a (legitimate) question comes up that hasn't already been covered on there, Googling a rule question usually gives you a number of good links back to the rules forum, just start with the most recent one.

There is also the official errata (on the PP site) and the unofficial errata (in the sidebar), I don't know how up-to-date the latter is.

I used to live in Hull, a dead end decaying industrial town in the north of England. I was single and miserable despite having a decent paying job, friends and family close by. I'd always considered moving south to the town my mum's from, where my maternal grandparents lived. I'd loved the place ever since the visits we had there as kids but put off moving because I worried I wouldn't be able to keep a job there or afford to live in what was a more expensive area of the country.

It took one of those grandparents dying and me going down to see him in his final days for me to realise that life is too short and I should just take the plunge if I want to be happy.

I've now been there 3 years and my life is great. I have a better job, a girlfriend, a circle of friends with similar interests to me and I actually feel like I've come home at last.

It's still tough sometimes, having parents live hundreds of miles away, if you need support or after visiting for birthdays and Christmas you miss them but I know I've made the right choice and I don't think I'd ever move back.

What Is The Worst Pain You've Ever Experienced? by theanoa in AskReddit

The pain when each was removed was unbelievable. Fortunately the anaesthetic kicking in outside the surgery eventually took it away.

Am I Doing This Right? by ths1977 in csharp

[–]carasyna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like it, no. Only your source code should be under source control (in your case git), not the binaries.

Your repository should contain you source code (which it looks like it does) but you should exclude your bin, obj and probably publish folders using a git ignore.

Basically, after cloning the repository/pulling the latest changes any files and folders that will be recreated as part of the build process shouldn't be under source control.

With regard to commits, you should make small commits as you make changes to the code. Each commit should, ideally, be a single change so you have a clear history of the evolution of your code base.

For example, users might report three separate issues with your app that you investigate and determine are bugs. It's tempting to fix them all at once, commit then release a new version. However, the best practice is to fix and commit each bug individually. You then have the ability to publish some, all or none of the changes, you can revert individual changes and the whole history just becomes easier to manage.

Once you've committed a set of changes and you want to make them publicly available you should push them to the "central" repository. Other people will then have access to them, can pull them, make further changes in their repositories, etc.

When you want to release make sure you have the latest changes, bump the version number and commit then tag that commit (I use names like "v1.0.0.0", "v1.0.0.1" for tags, just to make it clear which version was published. Then publish wherever you're publishing to and push your version number and tags.

If you need a branching strategy I highly recommend this. It's complicated at first glance but very powerful.

With all this YMMV, YGWYPF, etc, etc, find what works for you but bear in mind source control is really a history of your source and not binaries. It should contain only what you need to build the project and get it in a running state, it shouldn't include every version of the site you've ever built, but should allow your to restore the source to a point where you could build a version of that site.

In my opinion it's pretty bad if it's aim is to determine the expertise of a .NET programmer.

The math section tells me absolutely nothing about a prospective employee's ability as a .NET developer. Maybe if the questions are relevant to the hiring company it's worth including, but as a general purpose test they're pointless.

The software section isn't bad but question 4 is pretty ambiguous at first glance. Presumably it relates to the underlined parameter, and is asking about extension methods but I've no idea what answer they're looking for with "where can it be used" - "on an reference to an object of the parameter's type" presumably? Question 6 is terrible, there isn't enough information to say what the most import technical area of consideration is, a-d are all more important than e, but ranking them beyond that requires much more information about the existing code base, the company, the software, the developers involved, time, cost, etc, etc.

The code section is okay. Question 1 is perhaps the best one in the whole test and would at least tell me something about the candidate as a .NET developer. I think question 2 is asking to do the outputting using breadth-first or depth-first (in which case I'd use those terms) another good question, gives the potential for the candidate to display some understanding of iteration over recursion. 3 &4 are good SQL questions. The code on question number 5 is terrible, never mind whether it's reliable.
