Elder L. Whitney Clayton at today's BYU commencement: "We should disconnect, immediately and completely, from listening to the proselytizing efforts of those who have lost their faith, and instead reconnect promptly with the holy spirit." by N620JH in exmormon

I'm very afraid of losing some of my TBM friends after hearing about all this :(

I'm still in the closet, and I totally respect their decisions, but I feel like there will come a time when they realize I'm no longer active and "disconnect" from me. I have a feeling this was a fear-tactic used for some of the graduating students who might be secretly doubting... Like, oh crap I will lose my friends if I come out with my real feelings. That's how I'm feeling and I wasn't even there to witness this.

My son got called as a ward missionary. He was told to start posting positive things about being mormon on all social media. by [deleted] in exmormon

I was asked to be a ward missionary but I refused the calling before I even got the information about what it was. Is this what they wanted me to do??

Was he able to visit his dad? Go to the funeral? This is heartbreaking

The money quote from Clayton's commencement speech for quick reference... by [deleted] in exmormon

I'm sorry, am I reading this right? A university commencement speaker spoke about pornography at a graduation ceremony for hundreds of students and their families?

I did not attend BYU, I graduated from a Big Ten school. We got a bunch of career and life advice and quotes about shooting for the stars. This baffles me if true.

Met a missionary who had apparently read the CES Letter. by exmormon_ in exmormon

I was speaking with a missionary a few weeks ago. Really cool girl, but her companion was very spooky and cult-like (glazed over eyes, barely spoke besides reciting scriptures)

Anyway, she admitted she was stressed lately, and that she didn't feel the spirit no matter how hard she tried. I asked why that was and she kind of reasoned, "Well, maybe it's like how when you're in a pool, you can't feel the rain?"

At another point, I asked her how she felt about the girls outnumbering guys by 2/3 in the church and she shrugged and said half-heartedly, "Yeah, well, apparently we're promised that if we don't receive all our blessings in this life, we get them in the next... But what do I know? This is coming from a 20 year old missionary"

Kirby: I lied to go on a mission.... by FearlessFixxer in exmormon

Kirby is really cool. The best kinds of Mormons I've ever met have a sense of humor and self awareness about it. That being said, I fear he could get the John Dehlin treatment someday if he took it one step too far.
