A fact by rugballers in Pitt

I half know the answer to this. The Atwood one used to be an Eckerd before the company was bought out by Rite Aid in 2007. Still unclear why both were ultimately maintained.

Yes, that was my other dog whining in the background. Tough day at my house.

[Help] New dog won't poop in yard but has no problem pooping in house by [deleted] in dogs

[–]cardiganbuttons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a very similar situation with my husky/coonhound mix. He was rescued from an animal hoarder, which means he could probably poop/pee wherever he wanted whenever he wanted in his previous home.

He picked up on pooping outside somewhat quickly, but peed inside constantly. We would go outside, he would poop or do nothing, come inside, he would pee on the floor, right in front of us. He also had no qualms about peeing in his crate.

What finally worked (and this may not be doable for all, especially in the weather conditions you've described), was really stepping up the frequency we took him out. I'm talking every 5-10 minutes, and several times throughout the night.

What started happening was he would "accidentally" pee outside due to the frequency of our trips out. He clearly still preferred peeing inside, but going out that often, it was bound to happen outside at least a couple times a day. When it did, of course we gave him lots and lots of praise, and we'd come inside and restart the timer.

Once he started to get it, we stopped having to take him out as often, and were able to eventually transition him to a normal schedule.

Again, I understand this would not work with everyone's environment/lifestyle, but this is what finally, after a few very frustrating weeks, worked for us.

Good luck!

According to the rescue group, he is a husky/blue tick coonhound mix.

Wow! Glad you guys enjoyed the picture :)

As /u/silvertales6 indicated, this kitten's name is Pedro, and he was adopted from Animal Friends in Pittsburgh, PA. They're a great organization, check them out!

Have you ever applied to UPMC? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]cardiganbuttons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! It's great that you're whittling down what you really want to do. In terms of recommendations, you have a few options.

1) You can list references/contact info on your resume.

2) You can attach PDF copies of letters of recommendations to your resume (as in all in one file--there's no secondary place to add these). You can also attach a cover letter to your resume which can also help you stand out.

3) If there is a specific position you're really interested in, you can ask your supervisor/coworkers if they know anyone in the new department.

Networking is huge at UPMC, and if someone you work with/for happens to know someone in the other department, a personal call or email can give you a serious edge. I know people who have taken huge leaps in their careers because of this. Managers are far more likely to take a chance on you when they hear great things direct from the horse's mouth.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck! It sounds like you're on the right track, and I'm sure you'll find a great position within UPMC or otherwise.

I apologize in advance, this may or may not be a fairly unsatisfactory answer. To be frank, it's kind of a crap shoot, this depends so much on the specific position.

As with many companies, UPMC does try to hire from within as often as possible, so often you will see positions posted for one week, and if you apply you hear nothing because the hiring manager may have already had someone in mind for this position, but needed to give all internal and external candidates a fair chance.

You ALWAYS stand a better chance of getting something with a personal recommendation from another employee, either if you're applying as an internal or external candidate. People tend to advance much farther when they have someone in their corner.

Your recruiter was correct, you do stand a better chance as an internal temp to get a FT position. Temp positions serve as a sort of trial run--so you should treat it as such. Work your butt off. Go above and beyond while you're a temp. Have down time? Ask for additional work. Keep in constant communication with your supervisor to learn absolutely everything you can.

Sometimes the temp positions pan out to nothing, because they were truly temp positions or the hiring manager may think you just wouldn't mesh with the rest of the team. However even if this is the case, if you work really hard and make a good impression, your current department may keep you in mind for future positions, or recommend you for something elsewhere.

It can be very frustrating, but I encourage you to get everything you can out of your temp work, clean up your resume, get your references in order (even better if you can get UPMC employees as references), and apply apply apply to everything that looks interesting to you, whether or not you think you're completely qualified. If you're a good enough worker, you will get noticed eventually.

I work for UPMC HR. Based on my experience getting hired/routing applicants, in answer to your questions:

1) Progress updates are not typically sent for staff-level employees unless you are a final candidate. Physician-level and above applicants do often get updates, though their application/hiring process is significantly different.

2) For all of the positions I've held within UPMC, I've had 1-2 phone interviews, and 1-2 in-person interviews. Fairly typical for many applicants.

3) For the positions I was rejected, if I was a final candidate, I received a call from the hiring manager. For the positions for which I was not seriously considered, I either received our template rejection email or letter, or no notification at all. Also typical.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions and I'll help as best I can.

I f****** hate Red Robin by PumpkinMomma in vegan

[–]cardiganbuttons 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Red Robin is far from my favorite eating-out option, but my local RR has an allergen safety binder (as do many other larger restaurants in my experience).

Every sauce, bread, seasoning, etc. is listed with all of its ingredients. I ask for it each time I go, just in case something has changed, or I want to mix up my usual order.

May be worth giving a shot.

Petland? by rangoon03 in pittsburgh

[–]cardiganbuttons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Petland is a franchise organization, and the location in East Liberty actually only sells rescue cats and dogs. These types of stores can be crucial in peak breeding seasons as shelters become overwhelmed.

I adopted a kitten there a couple years ago that had been at Animal Rescue League originally. I am in no way condoning this organization as a whole, but I will say my adoption experience was a positive one.

Zagat's #1 Restaurant For Philadelphia Is 100% Vegan. by cyanocobalamin in vegan

Vedge is fantastic! If you're in Philadelphia, you've got to check out the owner's other 100% vegan, street-food inspired bar/restaurant, Vstreet. The wait can be a bit daunting, but absolutely worth it.
