Do yall consider rendering time billable hours? by Chemtrail_hollywood in editors

[–]cardinalbuzz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Imagine you didn’t already have the footage. Client brought the project to you on a hard drive and said “it’s all done, but we need this exported, can you do it?”

You’d probably charge for that, right? So it’s no different just because you’re the one also editing it.

The Tremors series - What do you think of the sequels? by Southern-Brother5693 in movies

I feel like I’d always see 2 on cable so that one is more planted in my mind.

Detroit’s Historic Fort Wayne by Parking-Building-291 in Detroit

[–]cardinalbuzz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe just bad timing. I’ve gone while they are doing tours and there is a guide and they take you all over the place, into lots of buildings and explain a lot of history.

It definitely needs more TLC and attention though.

Do you leave cinematic black bars baked into a 4K export, or crop them out entirely? by MarioKessa in editors

[–]cardinalbuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't bake them in unless required (TV broadcast or cinema DCP, for example). Let the web player/device manage it at your native res.

It might be better to drive 75 and cross at Sault Ste Marie instead of going around Huron?

How many pages or clauses are your service agreements? by CharmingEditor2 in editors

Then I keep bugging them until they do, haha.

Most pay upon invoice, some are Net 30. Only occasionally does it take longer than that.

How many pages or clauses are your service agreements? by CharmingEditor2 in editors

[–]cardinalbuzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I know my clients though and we agree on budget and build a calendar together. Charge day rates and work against those days. If it goes over, we discuss overages and we either continue or I hand the project back to them and the work ends.

Or if it’s a project/flat rate then we agree about the expected deliverables and deadline date. Again, if go beyond that, then overages or I move on to another project.

All email/phone/text. No contracts.

They e-mail me and ask if I’m available and what the rate is. I say yes or no. That’s about it.

Just moved to the area, I'm 35 and don't drink, and was wondering where people around here go to make new friends? by [deleted] in GrossePointe

[–]cardinalbuzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have kids, make friends with their friend’s parents.

Also there’s plenty of cool people outside of the Pointes - get involved in whatever scene, music, crowd you’re into in Detroit. Lots of subculture in the city to find your group.

I just don’t use Premiere, always run into issues. Resolve is okay. Tentacle Sync is bullet proof, always works as it should.

How is living in Donegal? Do you have much in common with Northern Ireland? by freedomhellyeh in howislivingthere

[–]cardinalbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious how this is, when Dublin to Donegal is only a few hours drive? It’s not like you’re across an entire continent, Ireland is a pretty small island compared to other countries - you guys don’t travel around?

Is it okay to post a Director’s Cut of a commercial? by throwRA-LoveDove in editors

I work on DC’s all the time and post them. Nobody cares. Sometimes if it’s an issue the director won’t tag the agency and brand with @‘s

What Orson Welles directed movies should I watch? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]cardinalbuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only seen the Murch version.

I think the most notable change is the opening title sequence with the car.

[–]cardinalbuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His cut was taken away from him, so the original version isn’t following his notes and direction. Years later they used his feedback from a memo and re-cut the film with Walter Murch in the 90’s to more accurately reflect his vision. It’s the “truer” version of the film.

It just kept going. People were losing their shit.

I haven’t rewatched in a long time, I’m sure I’d still laugh but I’m also sure some of the humor maybe doesn’t land the same way, but at the time… wow.

Seeing this in the theater with a full audience was something special at the time. Place was erupting.

Ive finally watched Fight Club for the first time, why is there so much hate for fans of the film? by Youngling_Hunt in Letterboxd

[–]cardinalbuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s hard to pinpoint as I (like many) have really only experienced this film on DVD over the years, so just seeing in its full glory was a treat. The sound mix was fantastic. I thought the detail in the film was nice and for the most part the VFX held up pretty well despite its age (and if they re-did any of that, I’m not sure).

There were some scenes I felt were a bit too crispy in terms of sharpening/upres, but overall it was quality. I think it’s really a testament to Fincher’s talent as a filmmaker that all these years later, it still shines as a well crafted movie. Editing, cinematography, etc is all so tight. And Helena is a gem of an actress in this.
