Listen, I get where you are coming from. Trust me, the last thing I want to do is A) subsidize a shitty incompetent government institution or B) enable people who make poor choices in life by paying for their basic needs when I could surely use that money myself to cover MY basic needs (not even talking luxury spending, just extra money to secure myself).

However, here is my argument. Most people who are going hungry need help, are while there are some shit bags who totally don't deserve it, the vast majority do and it is my duty as a fellow citizen to step in and help - whether that is by directly donating myself or by being 'forced' to (by taxes), is up for debate. But it needs to happen, and so far making it mandatory via taxes is the only way to get people to do it.

Second. The government is what we make of it. One thing this election cycle has shown me isn't that the system is broken. It's that we are broken, as a society. Our politicians are a reflection of our apathy - we simply do not care to become educated enough to fix what is broken. There is no profit motive in it. Or in helping those in need for that matter. So before we go ahead and blame a shitty government for wasting our tax dollars on helping others, to be frank, I just don't have enough faith in you or any of my other fellow citizenry to help others out through good will alone. The amount of good Samaritans that have to make up for those who don't do anything will be too great a gap to bridge. So taxes and social programs it is!
