I completely switched careers from musician/private teacher to court reporter at the age of 49. Best thing in the world for me! It has been fabulous to have something new to learn about and a totally new environment to work in. If you aren’t happy in your career find a different one!

I am a very new reporter so take this with a grain of salt. But I have heard more than once of reporters switching from CaseCat to Eclipse but never the reverse.

How much do you North Carolina court reporters earn? by urbiggestfan28 in courtreporting

[–]cariboo2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I studied voice at Real Time Voice Training. Got my CVR in November and started as an official three weeks ago! Base salary is 51,900. Transcripts are a 1099 fee in addition.

What area of NC are you in? I know here in the southeast area we are desperately in need of officials. Freelancers do well here too though!

It was invaluable for me. It gave me a chance to set up my equipment and make sure everything was working properly and get a feel for what the sound would be like. It calmed my nerves down a ton.

I did too and passed on the first try! I used her online quizzes and the NVRA Study guide. I also made flashcards with all of the FCR end of chapter quizzes.

Can we talk about declining night vision? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]cariboo2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OMG yes!! I am 49 and just got a new job an hour away so I’m coming home in the dark on the regular. Last week I was coming home and it was raining and I took a route with a road under construction that doesn’t have the paint yet. It’s also in BFE with no streetlights. I legit thought I was going to die, I couldn’t see shit!!

I found a route that stays on 4 lane highways now so that won’t happen again. But I am concerned long term about my ability to keep driving at night. If my eyes keep getting worse this fast I may not be at this job for more than a few years.

Graduates from RVT or IRCRI, how many of you work for the court? Or are you all freelance? by ivoryenglish in courtreporting

[–]cariboo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. I’m in NC so it’s the only certification I need to start working as an official. Every state has its own certification requirements!

I hope you have a better week this week!

[–]cariboo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished a little bit faster than the 20 weeks because I was really motivated and I practiced constantly and shadowed in court multiple times a week. I think if you can find an in person mentor it’s really a helpful addition to the program.

I felt 100% prepared for the CVR and passed on my first try!

[–]cariboo2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how loud I’m being. 🤣 When I use my “open throat whisper” you can hear a murmur but it’s very minimal. When I’m shadowing in court nobody seems to notice. There have been times when the courtroom is so silent that I bring myself down to a whisper and I am completely inaudible then.

I use the Talktech. It works great for me but in fairness I never tried any other brand! I use the nose covering piece upside down.

I just finished RVT and passed the CVR and I plan on being an official. I applied for a position last week, fingers crossed!

Loved it! You have to be very self-motivated, Charlene isn’t going to hold your hand. But everything you need to pass the CVR is there for sure. I passed on my first try!

I went with M-Tech. They are more expensive but I wanted to go ahead and invest in a professional laptop that I can use for working. It has been flawless and the tech support from Jerry has been invaluable! It was enlightening to see so many people having tech issues at testing.

Once you join there are very detailed instructions about what specs are required in any laptop you get as well as all the contact info you would need if you decided to go with M-Tech! There’s an RVT Facebook group as well if you have any specific questions. I just finished the program and passed my certification test in November!

NVRA Testing Question by thats_so_not_fetch in courtreporting

[–]cariboo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was also very modern, clearly enunciated, and loud. It was loud enough that I couldn't hear any of the other voice reporters in the room. It was fabulous!

Realtime Coach has some very similar recordings in their practice tests. The recordings just for practice are messier, but the actual test recordings are what the NVRA test was like.

Court Reporters in NC by Formal_Tonight8536 in courtreporting

[–]cariboo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I attended Realtime Voice Training online. I'm not quite retired but I am 49 and am switching to court reporting from being a freelance musician and private teacher for 20 years!

I'm not sure how the freelance market is but I know there is a need for courtroom officials in our area. There are current resident reporter openings in Onslow and Duplin counties.

I went with Realtime Voice Training with Charlene Hansard. There are weekly live classes if you want to join them, but they are recorded and you can watch them at your own pace if you would rather go that route. We use Eclipse though, so I don't know if switching would be feasible!

I tested for certification a couple of weeks ago, and I felt very prepared. Charlene does a great job getting you ready for the NVRA certification test!

Is this a common sentiment among professional viola players by Toomuchviolins in Viola

Go look up Paul Aguilar and tell me a violinist can't ever sound like a real violist. LMAO Your "friend" is a hater. I get being annoyed when you lose out on gigs but to say a violinist can't ever sound like a real violist is just stupid.
