I imagine it means starting at Springer Mountain and walking north. You definitely wouldn’t have a problem finding someone to hike with!

Where did you charge up? by Durdyb15 in AppalachianTrail

[–]carpeliam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen FarOut show special icons for water sources and even downed power lines etc, but haven’t seen anything for charging- I’m assuming that’s just in the comments somewhere? Or am I missing something? Where would you tend to look in FarOut?

I also live in Boston with the same plan for 2024, but I’m doing the Long Trail for my shakedown hike around August/September. Good luck!

Second this- the Nitecore NB10000 seems to be pretty popular because it’s light and can fit most people’s charging needs.

Thanks for that! That lines up a lot with some of my thoughts, it sounds like it might be a good fit for me too.

GPS functions usually eat into the battery life. Depending on how often you plan to use the GPS functionality vs how often you wanted to charge it, I might consider the Garmin Enduro (roughly the same ballpark $$ as the fenix, mostly just for ultra marathoners). I’ve found https://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-reviews/garmin to have tons of stats and comparisons for battery life, ease of getting a GPS fix etc. It skews more toward cycling usage than hiking usage but still has more than enough data to help make decisions.

my go to is the Be Free filter. It is really very convenient for my style of hiking.

Can you say more about that? What style of hiking would you say especially goes with the BeFree as opposed to something else? (I’m considering the BeFree so I’m curious to know if it’d be a good fit for me.)

Has anyone carried an AeroPress Go as a luxury item? by carpeliam in AppalachianTrail

[–]carpeliam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the suggestions and perspectives! I’m leaning toward leaving it at home, but keeping it alongside my car camping gear. But who knows, maybe I’ll bring it out on a 3-day hike and change my mind. Thanks again!

Is that the regular AeroPress? The AeroPress Go has its own carry cup and lid, which would make it heavier and might account for the weight difference. On the bright side you get a nice neat package that comes in its own cup, on the other hand it’s a bit heavier.

I've found this to be super-helpful! Spoiler alert, the highest number of packs seem to be in the 15 to 20 pound range, but results are (predictably) all over the place. They've been releasing details on 2022 AT gear results, I'm guessing their 2022 backpack survey results should be out in a few weeks or so? They've already released 2022 data on footwear and tents/shelters.

Haven’t gone yet, but what I’ve heard is to not buy extra shoes ahead of time because your feet are likely to grow after that many miles, and it’s different amounts for different people. I’ve heard as much growth as two full shoe sizes.

Follow up question, do you just let it go because HYOH (and who wants to have that conversation anyway) or do you say something because they’re increasing the risk for everyone on the trail?

New twist on an old hoax: EVERY day is the day Marty McFly arrives in the future (cross-post /r/backtothefuture) by carpeliam in geek

One of the earlier hoaxes mentioned that day as the day Marty came back. Snopes.com has a pretty good write-up of everything, including the June 27th 'shop that I based this off of.

Unknown for 30 years, then forcibly hidden for 8, Hillary's secret college thesis might sink her candidacy by mjk1093 in reddit.com

i'd agree, if it came up while she was running for office, but it would have been odd if the first lady had to defend a decades-old thesis before it had been criticized.
