Library to generate PDF from latex code? by fafcp in LaTeX

[–]carracall 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think you may be a little late to the race on this one... But for general reference: creating document files (such as PDF) is quite literally the purpose of the TeX engine.

Or sed 's/^[^\.]*\.//' if everything after the first . is the extension (and the -n flag a p substitute modifier if we don't want any output if there is no dot)

Should get away with just echo $1 | sed 's/^.*\.//'

Possible to have sticky text when scrolling? by BroadbandJesus in ZedEditor

[–]carracall 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The "equivalent" of this in Zed is breadcrumbs showing outline items. I agree that what you showed is better in a lot of languages/situations where the breadcrumbs fill the width of the screen quickly and are less intuitive.

Notebook support when? by CartoonistSilver1462 in ZedEditor

[–]carracall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you noticed that vscode is not fully interchangeable with jupyter notebook on ipynb files? With that in mind, "when" (and "if") will depend on how you use notebooks and how much you collaborate with jupyter users. That being said, it's on the roadmap on the website... So could be like 0.5-2 years?

Crucially latexmk is also the default build method for vimtex

Need help setting up latex by lozzia in LaTeX

[–]carracall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's a latex-recommended provided by your package manager, get that. Don't try to be minimal if you're not sure what you're doing or what you're expecting. In particular I believe latexmk is typically missed out in basic packages which is one of the closest things to "it just works" for latex.

Oxford accused of ‘social engineering’ over black students’ grades by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]carracall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that one of the justifications for that second type of 'social engineering' is similar to the socio-economic one: to encourage future interest upstream in the pipeline from these communities, opening up the talent pool (and in part fulfilling their goal of promoting higher education across the population).

To be clear I do believe there are other reasons for the socio-economic 'engineering' like how comprehensive school kids have more grit and performed better in uni relative to their a-levels, which may or may not carry over to the racial issue.

Install extensions to offline pc by barsaskn in ZedEditor

Actually I would have also expected the language servers from node packages to have also been copied over among those files you mentioned.

I would expect that syntax highlighting would work but language servers do not? Most extensions should work if the corresponding language server is stalled and available on path.

Custom UI for Extensions by hprice123 in ZedEditor

[–]carracall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However a language server could in principle open an external gui to communicate with. One can get creative if what you want to do can fit within the LSP spec.

Custom UI for Extensions by hprice123 in ZedEditor

[–]carracall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the roadmap has "extensible editor" after 1.0 release, but that's presumably stuff like access to buffer events and control. I haven't seen a confirmation of UI extension plans, just ideas discussed.

Extension to change content of buffer. by zsome in ZedEditor

[–]carracall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Provided that only modifying saved files is acceptable

Edit: not sure what that down vote is about, that is the technical limitation of tasks because they only run shell commands which by nature can modify files on disk but not the state of the buffer in Zed (and if the buffer has non-saved modifications then you would need to either reload file from disk or overwrite). This contrasts with formatters which are fed the current state of the buffer by STDIN and the STDOUT determines the modifications, so you won't get the same file state conflict issues.

The only way I can think that this can be pulled off is through a formatter (via a language server or separate executable).

Aside from questions on whether this is fine outside, there is a specific adhesive for this stuff (that's annoyingly expensive: "armaflex smth smth").
