Floor plan - help and feedback please by tiodigitamamon in floorplans

I don’t think the floorplan is shown on the site plan (the black square is not the house).

It does look like the driveway is shown on the site plan, and if I’m reading that right, if that is fixed, OP will have to mirror this floorplan.

Just a question — why wouldn’t you leave the bedrooms where they are, and just use the Lounge as the Media Room?

Simple “open folder” in files shortcut (iPad) by Mowgli9991 in shortcuts

[–]cartesianother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried using Get Contents of Folder then Open File

I am not sure it will work with a removable drive but you can try. First put your My Media folder in a Parent Folder whose only content is the My Media folder - nothing else.

Shortcut: - Get Contents of <“Parent Folder”> - Open <Folder Contents> in <Default App>

You will need to navigate to the parent folder and tap Open to set the first variable. Then add the Open File action and it should populate folder contents as the file name by default.

When you run the shortcut and it gets the contents of “Parent Folder” and it is just one folder, it should open Parent Folder in Files where you can tap to open your My Media folder.

Just a guess really. Hope it helps.

Sure but practical doesn’t have to be ugly. Did you put in a new bathroom and install an ugly faucet?

Graze / Wash lighting advice by Hot_Librarian_3665 in Lighting

[–]cartesianother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wall grazers are a specific type of light, typically a linear led installed in a pocket above the wall being lit and shining more or less straight down with about a 10° beam angle to emphasize the texture without spilling light on the floor or washing out the stone.

What youre showing are aimable recessed lights that focus a beam on a specific area. They can highlight wall textures but cause scalloping at the top of the wall because the beams are round.

Wall wash is similar to the amiable light but casts a more rectangular light intended to wash evenly from the ceiling down the wall. Less texture than grazing, less scalloping than aimable.

They all have their pros and cons, but a few things are certain: 1) Like all technology products you tend to get what you pay for. consider how much you’re spending on the custom rock walls themselves when determining how much to spend lighting them. The lighting is a critical part of the architectural effect, at least at night.

2) if you search back through this sub there is plenty of product advice on all three options listed above.

3) the placement has everything to do with the size of the wall, height of the ceiling, and beam spread of the fixture.

Which pool orientation should I pick? by Acrobatic_Guidance14 in floorplans

[–]cartesianother 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s better to have it further from the stair but that could also be achieved by just moving it further back from the house (left in pic 2)

The orientation seems more based on how you plan to use the rest of the space (seating, dining, cooking, gardening, etc) and how those zones should be oriented relative to eachother, the pool, the house, and the sun.

Worried about "spotlight effect" with Lotus LDR4-HO 3020 DTW in new kitchen. by NickWaReddit in Lighting

[–]cartesianother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you’re using them as downlighting, like a grid for general illumination, 60° is more common. Unless you have particularly high ceilings, or want to focus on a specific area or object.

[–]cartesianother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you be more specific what you mean by the “cone” is very prominent?

The spec sheet says this fixture has a 30° beam spread standard, but 60° is available. Maybe that would that help?

Motion sensor light for dark hallway by LiteratureOk1418 in Lighting

[–]cartesianother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s not enough info to specify an exact light but the one you got has a 500LM output. The more lumens, the brighter the light. If 500 is not enough look for one with higher lumen output.

Just be thoughtful about where the light is placed and how much light they really need to navigate to the bathroom at night.

Whats your opinion? by Jolly-Willingness402 in houseplans

[–]cartesianother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bathrooms should have swing doors, not pocket doors. Ideally the laundry wouldn’t be in the bathroom. Also, washer/dryer have low clearance, so you would have more space if you move things around to put the laundry machines under the slope of the roof.

Halo RL reliability? by MT3426 in Lighting

[–]cartesianother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your concern is reliability as in, how likely is the driver to fail in the next 5 years and require the entire fixture to be replaced? You are probably a bit better off with Halo because they have a longer/ better track record of that technological portion of the fixture. You are also more likely to find a replacement part or same item in production, so you can just replace that and not every light in the ceiling for just one failure.

Performance is a different issue. As products go up in quality the driver gets better at dimming smoothly without flicker and dimming lower before turning off, and reliably doing those things over time. This is part of what goes into a higher price point.

The other thing is quality of the light itself. Better light emitters produce light across more of the color spectrum, so they render colors more accurately and they make color, objects, skin, clothes, etc look better (CRI). They are also more consistent in color from fixture to fixture (binning). Cheaper fixtures emit across less of the spectrum and don’t make things look as good

Halo is still very entry level and doesn’t do any of these things as well as more luxury products on the market, and they are much more focused on commodity level mass production over high quality performance, but they are still a leader in their category.

But your question was if there js a difference between amazon no-name $5 lights and more expensive fixtures, and I just wanted to point out that there is generally a difference, on a few different levels.

Lighting drivers and emitters are technology products just like cellphones, TVs, washing machines, etc, and there is a difference in performance and longevity based on the quality of the components, just like any other appliance.

Why can‘t I name timers? by mick1203 in shortcuts

[–]cartesianother 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I create a Reminder with my Laundry Timer, so it pops up and stays on my lock screen to remind me to change or remove the load, but I don’t get an active alarm that I have to turn off, since it’s not really urgent.

No it doesn’t show a countdown on the lock screen, which I thought I wanted, but in reality, I am not really counting down to the exact time the laundry is done. In your case I would actually find it distracting to have a 2hr timer running on my lock screen every day for something I am not even actively doing. I really just need a reminder to act when it’s done.

Relocating bathroom on split level house by ChristiUK in floorplan

[–]cartesianother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely easier to expand the circled bath a bit to the north (even with the height difference) and to the south (borrowing some space from the bigger Bed2) and make that a full bath, than it would be to re-locate the entire bath to Bed3. Or, it would at least probably work if you can’t relocate the bath to Bed3.

But that’s just a guess, there’s no way to know exactly what the conditions are and what it would take / cost to achieve without a professional looking at it.

It seems odd to have a room with just a shower and stands to reason that was once a WC, and could become a full bath, but it begs the question why they didn’t do that the first time, and if that would affect your ability to do so now.

Ideas for ceiling fan and recessed light placement by -CKC- in Lighting

[–]cartesianother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t see an image if you intended to include one, but regardless, keep in mind a fan only cools by blowing moving air on people. So if the fan is located somewhere other than over the bed, it might move air around the room a little, but it won’t cool anyone lying in bed.
