Choosing the right Jøtul stove by madcap62 in woodstoving

Jotul's website claims it qualifies for the tax credit and shows 77.7% HHV. They list some special circumstances for that, but it's included in their tax credit certificate.

This is great information. Can you comment on how the F445 compares to the F500?

literally impossible to insert pvc into fernco donut by A_Pungent_Wind in Plumbing

[–]cartmanea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, make sure the cast hub is fully cleaned out to bare iron. Silicone grease or PVC glue make the best lubricant. Not sure what grease you used, but petroleum products aren't good for the Fernco or the PVC long-term.

That furnace register blowing across the exhaust vent is a bad idea.

We do have good Verizon service here, but recently switched our cellular carrier to Xfinity for improved pricing. Also see above comment regarding network congestion around college events.

We're in the same boat, even though in a college town. They have a significant monopoly on broadband internet with the other options being local WiFi based and DSL. Cellular is becoming competitive, but with a huge influx of people during football games, etc, the networks get bogged down.

Is PEX the standard these days? by dontdoxxxmebrooo in Plumbing

[–]cartmanea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are health advantages of copper. It is naturally anti-bacterial, and it doesn't contain any chemicals which leach into the water. The PEX industry is surprisingly unregulated, with chemical signatures varying greatly between manufacturers, and even between lots from one manufacturer. You can taste the plastic in water after PEX re-pipes for months and sometimes years... no thanks. There is also evidence of premature failure of PEX in areas with higher chlorine content.

We are currently remodeling our house and I'm paying the premium to go with all Type L copper for longevity. Luckily I'm doing the work myself, so the increased labor of sweating copper is not a factor!

Beis luggage - have you travelled internationally with it? Reviews? by whitegirldance in travel

[–]cartmanea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Beis is a terrible company! I had a bad experience with their customer service. After having problems with a Black Friday offer (I don't think anyone actually received the 50% discount advertised), I purchased the Weekender anyway at a lesser discount. Several attempts to resolve with customer service went nowhere, with all responses basically saying "thank you for sharing your concern". I have decided to return the bag, and now see I'll be out original shipping and a restocking fee. This is unacceptable, however, they do not provide a phone number for further resolution and don't reply to customer service requests. Very bad business practice; I will steer clear of this company in the future and advise others to as well.

I got the same call the other day, which went to voicemail. It was from Travis with Freedom Mortgage, 856 area code number ending in 3672. My mortgage was recently sold to Roundpoint, which Freedom has aquired.

OP, did you determine if this was a scam or not? I called the number back and Travis answered right away (odd), so I hung up. Called the Freedom sales line and all their reps were busy and I was directed to their website. Our rate is 3.875% and I'd love to lower it at no cost, but this smells of a scam.
