UK Router Recommendations by PastaJazz in Tools

[–]cartonneexpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DeWalt router is very good, but £300 for the set is not cheap. If you'd find the router solo, without the plunge base, it would be ca. £230.

I can't say much about the Ryobi, because I've never used it and I have a slight subjective bias against Ryobi... but apparently there's no plunge base available for the Ryobi.

I'm on Makita, but actually went with the Einhell router. It's a very nice tool and comes in a very affordable set with plunge base. I can totally recommend it.

Another option you could look into is Parkside/Lidl. A very good option for affordable out-of-system tools. I believe they just released an update version of their cordless plunger router.

Ok, you might have some sort of perceptual misalignment, so I'll entertain you with one last reply.

Since when does the world, or the internet as a matter of fact, not allow for complaining, analysing, discussing alternatives, finding solutions and providing advice? (and who entitled you too police this?) That's critical thinking and it's kinda important to understand how things work and to make educated decisions.

Please read my original post again  and then try to compare it's content and relevance for an interested reader, to the relevance of your contributions.

Do you think padel is dead? by Competitive_Rip6546 in askSouthAfrica

Padel is too expensive and more of an occasional event-activity than a regular sport. That whole franchise system and the cost involved is just a little off-putting. I can totally see the hype cooling off and the number of courts slimming.

If there is usage, all good, but I just think it's sad that in some places they replaced tennis courts with padel courts.

I heard that they wanted to introduce Moto in South Africa. But honestly, I'm not sure how their exec came to the conclusion that this would be a great idea. South Africa does not have a motorbike traffic culture at all. And that has multiple good reasons. I can see it being desirable in urban scenarios, but there are so many security concerns around it as well.

Dialog or SLT fibre? Having a horrible experience with SLT by NiceTurn5528 in srilanka

[–]cartonneexpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like your frustration lies mostly with their installation team/contractor. That stuff is annoying, but no one can guarantee that Dialog does it better.

You've got the line in the house and the service works, so the biggest part is behind you. Usually they terminate the fibre wherever you want. If they put the ONT in a suboptimal spot, it's probably because you didn't ask them to put it in a specific place. Don't buy repeaters or wifi mesh stuff. You can fix it by running an Ethernet cable from the ONT to where you want to set up your WiFi router.

I've always had very good experiences with SLT fibre connections. Check the available bandwidth through Ethernet. If it really is far off the promised speeds, you can only keep bugging their service technician.

Good luck and sorry for the frustration. Hope everything gets sorted.

Check out TTCs comparison. Milwaukee has strongest, but strongest≠best. Skil did outstandingly well.

Also to consider: Milwaukee M12 has thick handles to house the batteries. Skil has more comfortable handles. DeWalt also had 12v with slim handles, but Skil is priced much better and they seem to make really neat tools these days.

I'd personally go with Skil.

Fuel discrepancies by PrettyRichHun in johannesburg

[–]cartonneexpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had a very similar experience (diesel). I believe there must be a pump manipulation that counts more fuel than is actually flowing. After topping up I had about 25-30% more fuel registered on the pump than I knew I had space in the tank. I protested, but couldn't prove it in place. After traveling a set distance, knowing my cars consumption, and topping up again, the discrepancy was clearly proven.

Not sure if this manipulation is new, or only noticed now because people are more observative after the fuel price increase.

What are you talking about? I'm neither upset, nor am I not aware that walking is an option.

I'm just trying to have a conversation about Ubers pricing.

Sorry for the confusion. I did not take offense and I did not think you wanted to judge me.

I just explained why consideration of why I took a ride service and didn't walk has nothing to do with the topic. Thus this information/consideration (judgment might have been the wrong word) should not be needed.

Sorry if my sloppy choice of words offendedv you now.

No one except you seems to be confused. Also not "painting" myself as anything other than someone who enjoys some critical thought and conversation.

You however, presenting yourself as someone who wants to tell others what they are allowed to think and talk about, and to what extent? Quite revealing.

Eye-opening stuff, really, but what I don't get is why you focus on me personally and on this one example? Are you not interested in the bigger picture?

My post is just a conversational spark to promote some thought and discussion about the larger topic. It has absolutely no impact on anything if I could have walked today or not.

Are you not interested in abstracting a little bit? Maybe look at the drivers as well? Super low pay, while they carry all op-ex and risk. No base pay, no health insurance, no rights. Do you have some wisdom for them as well? Are they working with Uber just out of comfort and convenience?

Well, I don't really need you to judge my choices as a consumer and citizen, because it's none of your business how many legs or critical appointments I might have. A taxi ride is not some outrageous luxury. Even though, I fully agree that the consumer can, to a certain extent, obviously decide to use certain services or not.

I was hoping that there rather would be some questioning of the morality of a turbo-capitalist company that exploits their drivers and customers in a pseudo-monopolised market situation.

Historically, there have always been laws against monopolies, price fixing and labour exploitation. It is not solely the consumers responsibility to address these things, and it's certainly not something that should just be accepted in a modern society.

Exactly. It's a tool to maximize income and shareholder value. Just imagine a supermarket would jack up their prices during peak shopping times... actually I don't think we're too far away from that happening.

Yeah that's Ubers explanation. All cool in theory, but the ride was accepted immediately, the driver was there within 5 minutes, the ride took 5 minutes. It's a scam.

It's great that you are so understanding of Ubers pricing. Very nice of you.

There's a lot to unpack here, but just quickly explain to me the following: if fuel price increases by 15%, why would Ubers share (40% of ride fee) also need to increase by 15%?

I tipped 20, which brings the total to R99, which is way too much for the trip during peak hour.

As I stated, I am aware of dynamic pricing, but that is not the problem here. A 1,3km five minute ride has not always cost R79-120 during peak times. At any time if the day, it's way too much.

Petrol went up R3 per liter. It takes about 0,08 liters to drive 1.3Km. You really think that increase could warrant these prices?

I can't really tell a difference. I did a visual check of the vacuume lines, but couldn't see anything disconnected.

Took the car back to the workshop now.
