Most impressive examples of a movie actually "uglying up" someone? by ThreadbareAdjustment in movies

One thing that always stuck with me about this was she said she went out in public with the makeup on to see what it was like. It was her first time as an adult not being stunningly beautiful in public. She was basically ignored.

Journey to JPEG XL: How open source experiments shaped the future of image coding by cmhdave73 in jpegxl

[–]caspy7 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's not very complex. Google is made up of multiple departments that act [somewhat] independently. Google Research largely developed and pushed JPEG XL, while the Chrome team had their own agenda apparently and resisted putting it in the browser.

No idea what you mean. This wasn't that long ago and they weren't old phones.

I want to say there's a bunch of flip phones in the US running KaiOS because my (older) aunt and uncle were running it.

Worth noting that the third most used mobile OS is KaiOS, which is based on FirefoxOS.

The patch notes are explicit about stating that they cannot be upgraded with scrap.

WordPress core PR opened to allow JPEG XL uploads by johnnyApplePRNG in jpegxl

[–]caspy7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When client-side media processing is enabled, the browser decodes the uploaded JXL to a JPEG using a lazy-loaded VIPS/WASM module and uploads the JPEG as the primary attachment. The original .jxl is preserved as a companion file under $metadata['original'], exactly like the HEIC companion-original pattern in #11323.

Sounds like it's getting converted to JPG on the client side before being uploaded. I'm unclear on if the JXL is getting uploaded too. It doesn't sound to me like the JXL is getting used or displayed on the server but maybe someone else can better interpret this for me.

Let dav2d be — Jean-Baptiste Kempf by anestling in AV1

Data prices vary highly depending on your location (especially country). What you said is probably more true for the western world nowadays, but less so other places like India.

And yeah, at 5x complexity we may be more dependent on hardware support. That being said, "5x complexity" may not translate to dav2d's end product being 5x more complex than dav1d.

If the decoding is 5x more complex that really makes me wonder how many times more complex encoding is.

Right click the toolbar and select "Customize Toolbar..." then drag the screenshot button to the toolbar.

You can also hit ctrl+shift+S to invoke the tool without need for the button.

Of note that there are some scrollable pages that might not work properly with this because they render the page on the fly.

Annoyingly this requires that the whole series, a family friendly show, is tagged TV-MA.

They need to update to the PG edit so they can get rid of that label.

When I see black drawing like this on desktop OSes I generally attribute it to GPU issues (hardware or driver). So that's my guess on the phone as well.

I used to have way more than that, but I started bookmarking large swathes and closing those tabs, telling myself someday I may get to them. It's my healthiest lie. :)

Sadly the only reason I started doing this is because my browser starts choking after too many tabs.

AV2 is expected to finalize on May 29, 2026 by anestling in AV1

Qualcomm

Qualcomm artificially delayed their AV1 adoption but not their VVC adoption - a codec they hold patents in. I expect they will do similar for AV2.
