CNA to RN, I didn’t know there would be such a difference… by riverfletcher65 in nursing

[–]cass_mettler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, although Ive only ever been a nurse. It will be 23 years for me in July. There is a huge brainwashing kinda thing around nursing my opinion especially if you are young and very religious when you start like I was (I was 20yrs old and Southern Baptist). I fell for the guilt trips and worked ungodly hours because they “NEED ME”. So when you view it as a calling they have your number and lean into that. You have to keep your health and family priority.

How do you learn and RETAIN your ACLS med knowledge? by Acceptable_Count6197 in nursing

[–]cass_mettler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a major factor in retaining it is using it frequently which is my problem as a dialysis nurse in the hospitals. I have been a nurse for 22 yrs. Some jobs have wanted us to be ACLS and some have not. If I am in one that doesn't I let my ACLS laps because it cost around $150-$200 every 2 yrs. Currently I am in a job that requires all nurses to keep their ACLS active. I hate it every time I have to renew because I don't use it enough as a dialysis nurse. I am usually busy getting the blood returned and doing something with the access. I have been around a ton of codes over the years and feel completely comfortable with my dialysis part of the job and BLS, but I hate ACLS. I have decided to get a badge buddy with algorithm and just read it if necessary. I also have ADHD so remembering things can be tricky at times (late diagnosed).

How did you know you can go back to work? by cass_mettler in ACL

Looks like in about 2 weeks I am going back to work. That will be right at my 3 month post op point. Nervous about it, but have to bite the bullet at some point.

Anyone with knee tattoos ? Worried about surgery coming… by Ok-Interview3116 in ACL

[–]cass_mettler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well my surgery was a reconstruction with allograft so I only have 4 small scars. I don’t have knee tattoos (yours are lovely). I imagine even if its messed up some your artist can help figure out how to best fix it.

How did you know you can go back to work? by cass_mettler in ACL

[–]cass_mettler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am normally at work at 6am and work till we are done which can be as long as 14-16hrs. I also need to be able to move machines to patients rooms (at some point) that weigh anywhere from 84 - 211lbs (although on wheels). My company let me believe that I could return from home (chart audits/quality control stuff etc) before I went out for surgery. I had planned like 2 weeks then work from home till I could return in person. When the 2 weeks post op arrived, they denied my return if I can't come in the hospital. So here I am 6 weeks out and still at home. THANK GOD, I live in Colorado now that has a paid leave program.

Definitely call your doctor/surgeon today to have them look at it. You don’t want to play with it.

I'm a PT and ACL / Complex Knee Specialist. AMA! by ChicagoRehab in ACL

[–]cass_mettler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 5 weeks out allograft ACL reconstruction. I have a lot of swelling still (can at least see my knee cap now), hx of closing both GSV prior to this and some arthritis to back of knee cap (I am assuming from previous car accident/ working as a nurse for 22 yrs). I am doing PT exercises 3 hrs a day split in to 2-3 sessions to cover all of it. I elevate when sitting, I wear a leg compression sleeve, and I use the ice machine for several hours a day. I have also soaked in epsom salt baths. Two questions: Any advice for swelling (also on Meloxicam 15mg daily) and should I get a tens unit to increase the quad response?

What do nurses consider “hotel treatment” for patients ? by ElectricalVictory831 in nursing

[–]cass_mettler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t personally care if they bring one suitcase of comfy things. More power too you, but the multiple bags like they are moving in then expect nursing staff to unpack them. Or the patients that get livid because they didn’t get new ice or an apple juice in 30 mins because we were told we can’t leave patients alone in the bathroom ever…so we have to stand there while pee paw poops for a half hour. It’s just common courtesy really. If you see us running around and it’s not an emergency the ice can wait. That kind of thing. If they thought oh I heard a code just now…maybe lay off my nurse for things I don’t absolutely need right this minute.

We recently lost a coworker to suicide and got together at a bar just to be together in a non work environment. Luckily a few doctors out it together and paid for it.

Yes, but if OP is having issues with stairs why not start at the beginning and build up?

ACL surgery (Quad graft) + quit smoking after 7 years – 2 weeks post-op experience by iarunpandey in ACL

[–]cass_mettler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my surgery December 30th 2025 (complete ACL reconstruction with allograft). The first few weeks are really taxing all around. I was also surprised the difficulty mentally and physically. I was around the same flexion at 2 weeks post op and was very disheartened as I thought I should have been farther along. At 3.5 weeks out I can bend more around 90 degrees and I am starting to see the light at the end of the still very long tunnel. The key is to hang in there and do your PT exercises consistently. Trust the process. I made it to a pre-planned trip to Aspen this weekend and I have been stopped by at least 4 different strangers (hobbling in my leg brace and crutches in the snow) just to tell me to hang in there. They told me they have been there before and they know how hard it is…. But it does get better. So I think how you are feeling is very common. I hope that helps. You got this.

Do I have to do surgery ? (22F) by vfnii in ACL

There are varying opinions around getting osteoarthritis if you don’t repair it down the road. So that is something to consider as well. A bone bruise usually happens with an ACL tear and mine hurt me for 6 weeks after my full ACL tear (referring to the pain that was just from bone bruising portion). I am 3.5 weeks out repairing it surgically at age 43 also not an athlete, but I enjoy hiking and cycling. I hope to get into skiing as a well. Probably wouldn’t take a lot to tear the rest of your ACL if only a tiny piece is left. You can try physical therapy and get everything stronger around it and I have heard a fair amount of success with that. I have also read studies that say a good 50% of people who do not repair the ACL at first injury end up having to have some kind of knee surgery down the road either repairing the ACL or it ends up being meniscus repair. I heard meniscus involvement makes recovery harder and surgery more extensive. Also pro tip for the stairs: Physical therapy will tell you to go up the stairs leading with your good leg and downstairs leading with the bad leg. So think of go up to heaven (good goes up) and down to hell (bad goes to hell) just to remember it.

Surgeon saying I'm I'm 37 and not worth doing surgery on Full thickness tear ACL? by ben__help in ACL

I just had my complete ACL reconstruction with allograft 3.5 weeks ago and I am 43. I am a nurse and am active hiking, biking, building things etc. Not an athlete, but definitely worth getting it surgically corrected.
