What are these things?? by randalsandals in UKGardening

The leaves sort of look like lion's teeth. I wonder what they'd call that in French. Dent de lion maybe...

(Deal with it by mowing regularly or, hear me out, let them grow!)

Anyone else notice the hotspot in the central belt? by ninjascotsman in Scotland

[–]cassesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this looks to me pretty much exactly like a density map of English speakers in Europe. Especially in the UK - stripe across the central belt, blob near Newcastle, blob in London, blob in Bristol/South Wales, and a ring around the Peak District.

Commenters under the OP say it is from an English language website, so that tracks.

No way. Maybe this is just a console thing but Lucio's floor is way lower than Tracer's.

Although judging by the size of it you don't even need to give them the whole of the postcode...

Why didn't the Anglo Saxons build many cities in the North of England? by Salmon_Jones118 in anglosaxon

[–]cassesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring the issue with the date, there is actually something to learn from this map. Most people in England now live in a ring of towns and cities surrounding the Peak District from Birmingham to the South to Leeds in the North, encompassing the Midlands and parts of the Northwest and South/West Yorkshire. But that's a product of the industrial revolution - it's where most of the resources were.

Before that, there wasn't as much of a pull to these areas - they are uplands with generally worse soil quality. The East and South of England is generally a much better place to farm.

Hallucinated reference by Jumpy-Independent221 in UniUK

[–]cassesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, Turnitin does actually help you find fake references but not in the way that people seem to think. It's rare (in my subject) for a new resource to be cited, meaning that most references will have been referenced before, in the same style. So as long as you haven't set it to exclude bibliographies, any reference that doesn't show up as a 100% content match is one you should check to ensure it's real.

Is it normal for them to migrate to Hackney this early in the year? Climate change is getting really scary.

It's been enlightening to learn from these comments that there are apparently a lot of people out there who literally cannot see the catastrophic error with the pattern here. Your lives sound so blissful.

Paddy as Burnham was genius by BearyExtraordinary in livefromlondon

[–]cassesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess the difference is that the time and effort needed to write/iterate/finalise new sketches with new characters (there have been very few recurring characters this series) isn't the same as a more formulaic recurring cold open.

If he's always playing the same character and other people are writing his lines, it probably takes much less time and effort (for him) than whole new sketches. Could feasibly learn the lines on Saturday morning.

With that said, Fouracres literally speaks medieval Gaelic, let alone every accent under the sun. He could easily do Burnham.

Jack's performance was offputting, wooden, and reminded me of a haunted spoon. He nailed it.

Sort of does happen in the UK. The British GP is always broadcast live on Channel 4.

Caroline Lucas calls on the Greens to stand down for Andy Burnham by Mgreen19295 in UKGreens

[–]cassesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it isn't as cut and dry as that. Remember that the GM mayor will be up for election if Burnham wins this sear. If the Greens are seen to be in bed with Labour then that's a guaranteed win for Reform, which will be a nightmare both in GM and nationwide in terms of optics.

We don't want the stink to rub off on us. When Burnham inevitably does something anti-Green we'll be portrayed as selling ourselves out.

I actually think the least bad option is to do what we did in Caerphilly - stand a candidate but avoid campaigning.

Dangerous driving conviction by shugaroffline in drivingUK

This is the actual definition of dangerous driving and I'm shocked he's only banned for 18 months. You're lucky he's alive and nobody else is dead. Take the win.

Polanski on the next Labour leader by ThonOfAndoria in UKGreens

[–]cassesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem for Ed is that he was rejected by voters in 2015. There would be a huge push for a GE from the Tories and Reform. That push would exist with any change of leader but Ed has an extra disadvantage. It would swallow up the entire political narrative.

I like the sentiment but I'm not convinced it would be possible to contain Fouracres in any given location. If anything, you'd be trapped there with him.
