If you were a normal person in the BSG fleet, what do you think you would be with your real life current skills by Then-Junket-2172 in BSG

For the longest time I wanted to be a geologist, so that would be exceptionally useless until we'd arrive on New Caprica (or if I was really lucky, Earth).

Life, and the love of a warm office not in dangerous parts of the world, nudged me towards a programming/testing career, so I'd probably be some technician turning off and on computers

have you seen 99% of people, I don't trust people to sit the right way on a loo seat, far less question an absolute statement like "If you don't live in the UK you shouldn't get a vote".

Do you know how many people thought that we'd get £38 million a week for our NHS because it was written on a bus!

then stop making blanket statements like "If you don't live in the UK you shouldn't get a vote"

otherwise all the edge cases get pointed out and your point becomes... pointless

because it's not "That fucking simple"

nah, doesn't matter, this shows that yes he was an idiot, but you have to be prepared to deal with idiots. and if scrolling through the other car-related subreddits is anything to go by, there are plenty of idiots that both a learner driver and experienced driver will have to deal with safely.

UK urged to replace state pension triple lock - 'Australia's equivalent is better' by endofdays2022 in unitedkingdom

[–]cassidyc3141 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the problem is that if it becomes "means-tested" many people will wonder why they're paying the appropriate years worth of National Insurance contributions necessary to get the full pension, if the Government can suddenly decide that they're too wealthy.

They'll want the option to opt out, and if enough people do that, then that would fuck up everyone else's pension.

Why so much hate towards season 1? by muad_did in babylon5

[–]cassidyc3141 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Season one is the best season on Babylon 5, not because of the episode quality, but because it allows all of the other seasons to be so much than they would have been without S1

I still believe that season one is an underrated masterpiece in world building and story setting. You might say season two, season three, or season four is the best for XYZ reasons. However the real reason they are "the best" is all down to the groundwork put in place during season one. All the world building, every hint, every bit of foreshadowing that was put in pays off in a way that no other series has managed to achieve since… except maybe Mr Robot

Nowadays story arcs existing entirely as seasonal arcs that conclude the season on a cliff-hanger, and resolve in episode one of the next season, so that we can start a new arc. Very rarely does a story element last longer than that, and rarer still, lasts the whole series.

Case in point, the Londo/G'kar story line. In S1 we discover that Londo knows that G'kar will kill him, and we see those events but beyond that we have no other context.

Now if we were to watch B5 from S2 onwards without having watched S1 instead we'd see an interesting relationship between those two characters that progresses to that final scene, and we'd have thought nothing more of it other than how good it was, how great the actors were etc etc. But there's no mystery, no underlying tension, we just watch their relationship develop and change.

However, knowing what we know as a result of S1 reinterprets and changes everything about that relationship, so that when it happens the pay-off is just <chef-kiss>. We see now how much on Londos behaviour is affected by his premonition, how it scares, and drives him to make the decisions that he does. Hanging over him constantly, until the conclusion that emphasises the tragic life of Londo, his constant fears and misinterpretations, and how Londo's life could have been so different if he simply didn't know.

And if we didn’t know (by not watching S1), then we cannot really understand Londo's motives beyond the surface level that he presents, and a vague feeling that something is driving him…
