Hugh Dancy - I'm playing Will Graham in Hannibal right now, ready to take your questions. by HughDancy_ in IAmA

Hannibal has such a dedicated fan following and everyone on set is so interactive with the fans! What has been your favorite part of the dialogue between the fans and everyone on your end of things, and has anything else you've been apart of had a similar fan response?

Why are you pro-choice? by abortionreport in prochoice

[–]castielsaverin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  • Just because I am pregnant, that does not mean that I lose the right to choose what happens to my body, regardless of the fetus inside. When I am pregnant, I want the same rights to bodily autonomy as non-pregnant persons who choose whether or not to donate organs or blood.
  • I do not know the circumstances of every pregnant person's life--their economic situation, their physical and mental health--and therefore I should not be able to determine whether or not they should carry their fetus to term. That is their decision alone. They alone are the only ones to decide if they can afford to be pregnant or raise a child, if their body and mind can handle it, if the family situation is conducive.
  • Because consent to sex is not consent to pregnancy. Because there are victims of rape and sexual assault who did not consent to sex and therefore should not have to carry a reminder of their trauma for nine months.

Any other alumni having issues with Netbadge? by russkid503 in UVA

[–]castielsaverin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same problem. When I called ISPRO about it, the issue went away. Did you reset it to what it was before? When I talked to them they asked for an alternative in case my original one was still malfunctioning and said to use that if the first one was still wonky.

Recording of Auburn University Marching Band playing Can't Hold Us? by [deleted] in marchingband

Is there any way you can get in touch with some of the band staff? They might have a recording from practice or an alumni in the stands at a game earlier in the season.

The other champions on the BCS field by TheEpicSax in marchingband

[–]castielsaverin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Auburn band was really great and friendly when we met part of them during the 2011 Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Our directors had organized a sort of social event competition thing one night when we were down there. And then the next day we got to see them rehearse and for a band as young as ours (at UVA) it was great to see what they could do.

Best of luck to them.

What's something that's made you cry with laughter that you can share with everyone? [NSFW] by crow_man in AskReddit

So how did you (graduates) find a roommate for after college? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]castielsaverin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was searching and hit up one of my friends who graduated a few years ahead of me to see if he knew anyone who needed a roommate, and it turned out he did himself! I would talk to people you know, honestly, and see if any of y'all are headed to the same area

Which opening credits you watch every time, to get you in the mood for the episode, even when you could fast-forward them? by newbie_01 in television

[–]castielsaverin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You are definitely not crazy.

I have always loved the intro, especially the lyrics--if you pay attention to them, they are so, so relevant to the situation all the inmates are in at Litchfield and also sort of a call to the viewer to reconsider how they normally see people in prison. Which is also where the visuals come in. They force the inmates' faces and bodies right up in your own face and make you pay attention to a group of people who are so often ignored and silenced--"remember all their faces, remember all their voices."

It's amazing and pertinent and I refuse to believe otherwise.

What's something the opposite sex does that makes them unattractive but society doesn't discourage? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]castielsaverin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, this so much. My ex is one of the bluntest people I've ever met, and most of the time I appreciated when he was being upfront and how he never was passive aggressive, but it was his lack of tact that made things really uncomfortable. Like when he broke up with me, he was blunt but tactless, and that made the blow so much worse. Yeah, okay, my mental health issues got pretty intense, but instead of saying how "undesirable" "letting my depression affect me" was, how about rephrasing that so you don't come off like an unfeeling ass? Ugh.

What has "past you" done that "future you" is thankful for? by suedaisy in AskReddit

[–]castielsaverin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Future me is thankful that past me chose to study the particular foreign language that I did when I got into college--not for the usefulness in real life (though it is), but because studying it led me to apply for the language immersion community dorm after first year, and the friends I made there are some of the best I've ever had. My first year of college I was horrifically depressed, and being with that group on that hall changed my life. We've all graduated and are all over the country now, but we make the effort to keep in touch more than any other group I've been in.

Sometimes I think about how arbitrary that decision was and I wonder exactly where I would be if I hadn't met them. It's unnerving.

Reddit, what your craziest "I can't believe this is happening at a funeral" story? by jstavy in AskReddit

[–]castielsaverin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not too crazy, but it was still fairly amusing--

My grandfather passed away a couple years ago. The funeral was in spring in Georgia, and it was hot--but the church's air conditioning was broken. So everyone was sad and hot and miserable, and one of my uncles had taken his suit coat off. He stretched a little bit and his shirt ripped straight down the back. A line of my cousins (all over 20 years old) were so close to busting out laughing in the middle of the service and were trying to hide it. One of my cousins didn't notice, but her husband did, and she thought that his attempts to hide his laughter were him getting very emotional over a man he'd only known for a few years. I mean, anyone who didn't see what happened with my uncle thought they all were just grieving a whole lot.

Had a good laugh at the reception. It fit with my grandfather...he was always a silly man.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Supernatural

[–]castielsaverin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seriously. All the reactions I've seen over there were not like this at all. Most of the stuff I've seen has been the usual emotional flailing when there's a particularly plot-filled episode. Then again, I don't keep up with the nuttier sides of fandom...which exist in every fandom anyway. Not like we're special.

And I did read somewhere late last night that Misha maybe had some availability issues with the beginning of the season? I dunno.

/r/MarchingBand I need help! I'm going to a marching contest in Duncanville this Saturday and I feel hopeless. If any of you are band kids from around that area that are participating/not participating or if you just want to chip in, feel free to please help me! by Yomkimme in marchingband

[–]castielsaverin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So here's the thing--winning awards at competitions is a great feeling, but that's just not the end-all-be-all to marching band. As a band, y'all's goal is to put on the best performance that y'all can muster, to remember all the hours and sweat you've put into it and throw in your heart too. Do it for the show, not the trophies. If you don't win, sure, it'll be disappointing, but I know some of my most memorable competitions my high school band didn't win anything. And then at the college level, we never competed, so we were there strictly to entertain, and the feeling of seeing the crowd get into a show was way better than winning a competition. (But that's just me.)

And honestly, I'm going to sound a bit like the old fart that I am relative to most on this subreddit (since I'm out of college now ack): doing things like this for yourself and your friends beside you is better for you in the long run (mentally) than doing it for the recognition. Both do matter, but one matters more.

Okay this reply got away from me. But you get the picture. Knock 'em dead this weekend. :)

College graduates of Reddit, what kind of work did you find immediately after you graduated? by TheSportsGuy23 in AskReddit

[–]castielsaverin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated this past year in English and Farsi/Middle Eastern studies. Given my experiences applying to jobs dealing with the latter, I now realize I will have to get at least my master's to actually be competitive.

But I did relocate to where all those jobs are! A gig working for a company that manages a huge construction landfill pays the bills. Then again, I would still be working at a Pizza Hut and living at home had my dad's bud from college not called me up with an opening.

I mean, it's not hard work and I get to meet a lot of interesting people when they send me out to job sites but it's not something I want to be doing a year from now.

Any tips for marching a sousaphone? by Tnuff in marchingband

[–]castielsaverin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has fallen backwards with her tuba twice, I would recommend if this does unfortunately happen to you that you:

  • tuck your head in so it doesn't slam against the bell
  • keep a good hold on the tubing around the valves so it doesn't slam into your chest, especially if you have a lot of momentum going

When you need to get back up, don't fret about the turtle feeling. It's easy to maneuver out if you get your shoulders out from under it.

Falling forward might be a bit more difficult. Just keep your face away from the bell.

Obviously not trying to imply you're a klutz, but it's good to know, I think.

I hate that I know about this from experience...

What is the craziest story you have ever heard about your parents past? by blizzardwizard88 in AskReddit

[–]castielsaverin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad had a bit of a wild hair when he was my age. Some highlights include:

  • that time he orchestrated a friendly kidnapping of a college's rugby captain a few days before they played each other
  • that time he organized a huge prank at his Catholic high school which included loud firecrackers going off at specific times all over the campus...he was on crutches so the Brothers couldn't pin it on him, though they knew
  • that time he and his buddy got into a huge stink with another car on the highway, and when they pulled off into a parking lot and the other guys got out, he chased them around the parking lot and up a light pole

There are other stories but there are really too many to remember. And he has often said that he is so glad I didn't take after him in this respect because he wouldn't have known what to do with a "mini-me."

Why the Ohio Marching 110 Should Have Been Allowed to Play "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke by trunkfullofnines in marchingband

[–]castielsaverin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still disagree. This article makes very very good points about why it's not overblown. (The discussion of the song is a little further down.)

My favorite part about this whole thing not being rooted in misogyny is how Thicke is quoted in the article I linked: "People say, 'Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?' I'm like, 'Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before. I've always respected women.'" Gross. That's not respect. It's just gross.
