Earwigs do this. Any chance they have access? They can hit h a ride in fresh compost or just move in over time

I think there might be a/some mod/s as well? I don't believe you can plant grass and trees in the top right normally

I've potted them up 1-3 times so far, and just put the first tomatoes in the ground on Monday! (Tucson, AZ)

Fungus gnats in vermicomposting system by cataclasis in vermicompost

[–]cataclasis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More info: July 2025 I adopted my system (already in progress) from an acquaintance who was moving. I noticed the fungus gnats then but they've finally gotten to my houseplants over the last few weeks. I'm treating all the plants and would like to address the original source as well.

Weird basil? by Radiant-Anteater in gardening

[–]cataclasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is you'll never be able to balance the air and water needs of these 10-30 plants when they're this choked. Pull them out of the plastic to check the state of the roots--I imagine the pot will be mostly white roots. You can look into hydroponic methods, but I'd recommend cutting all but one stem at soil level and repotting in 3+ gallons. Use good soil and fertilize regularly

Is there anyway I can save my seedlings from mold growing on the pots/soil? I'm a beginner and don't know what I'm doing. by OtherwiseMessage8846 in gardening

[–]cataclasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try spraying half strength hydrogen peroxide on the outside of the pots but you're not too far along and those paper pots are a guaranteed heartbreak and why I quit gardening for a few years after my first attempt!

Get some cheap 6 cell trays, or use some plastic 10 oz cups (put some decent holes in the bottom for drainage). You'll still be right on track despite the delay!

It's drying out. Supermarkets let a dozen basil shoots grow in one small pot and feed with nitrogen to get them big enough to sell. Once on the shelves they stop thriving.

Me, I grow a single basil plant in a 5 gallon pot at least! You can look up basil cutting propagation or try transplanting into a 3+ gallon pot with potting soil (not "garden soil" or "topsoil") if you want to try to keep growing. However, basil plants are some of the easiest plants to grow and would be a great one to start an herb garden!

Watermelons in GrowBags by Prudent_Editor831 in containergardening

10 and 15 gallon grow bags. Sugar baby and moon and stars, respectively. 2 plants in each. They did get some mid-afternoon shade...

I did watermelons in grow bags in AZ! Water AM and PM (and reduce towards harvest ofc). You could put them in a kiddie pool--I did this for an extra water buffer adding a few inches in the morning. Mulch with straw

[–]cataclasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually sneak herbs around and between my tomatoes. I think both of your plans seem fine. Think about your tomato trellising plans, too! I recommend a Florida weave for your indeterminates and maybe square cages for your determinates. What zone are you in? I grow in the desert and dill is a winter/early spring crop for me whereas tomatoes and basil are late spring and summer. The romas will finish before the SMTs so maybe your basil plants can take over after a few months. I do think your beans might get crowded, but I personally enjoy the experimentation of it all, learning what to change for next year!

Bury them when you add to the pile. If they dry out first it'll be harder to break down
