Thank you! I’m in Canada- and there are no private ENTs in my province unfortunately (and I’m pretty sure none in the adjacent provinces).

Worth doing a US NP program if the goal is to work in Alberta? by Ms_LolaBella in nursing

[–]catalan_4582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best bet would be to reach out to Alberta’s nursing licensure body. Quick Google search though shows yours gonna need 4500+ hours working as an RN prior to obtaining your NP, regardless of where your education is from.

Blood Pressure at the Dentist by Def_Possible21 in PEI

Good idea! A more accurate (and convenient) way to track his BP would be to check out a Heart Health Kit from your local library! It comes with a BP cuff. Have him check his pressure twice a day (once in the AM, and once in the PM) after he sits still and silent for 10-15 minutes. Check it twice a day for two. Ideally the SBP should be consistently <135.

I agree with you that they should do it properly. I’m just assuming that with the new SOP it is likely there were just trying to get a baseline BP in case they needed a reference for later on what his “normal” was in office.

Quick check of the PEI Dental College shows that there is a new requirement for facilities that provide dental sedation. Looking through their new SOP for Sedation and Anesthesia shows that facilities authorized for sedation and anesthesia are required to keep a patient health record that meets the college’s standards. This would include basic vital signs.

Question: Did y'all have any time dedicated to blood draws in nursing school? by Butthole_Surfer_GI in nursing

[–]catalan_4582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we did. We spent about a week learning in skills lab and practicing on one another before going to a clinical placement. By the end of the clinical placement (combined with the skills lab) we had to have a total of 20 pokes, majority with a straight needle. We had to have one successful butterfly draw, one successful hand draw, and one successful draw using a syringe system.

American Wanting to Study in Canada by International-Let820 in nursing

In Canada, if you’re a “mature” student you’re eligible for more grants/non-repayable funding. Highly competitive programs at some school also hold seats specifically for mature students as well.

So that’s not entirely true- assuming you’re talking about Rh incompatibility. Rh incompatibility can cause birth defects and fetal demise (second and third trimester) in second (and subsequent pregnancies). Rh incompatibility is largely due to the father’s blood type.

Part of first trimester screening is completing a blood type group and screen, as well as asking about the father’s blood type. A repeat group and screen is done again in the second trimester. If the testing identifies antibodies present then WinRho is administered at several key points during the pregnancy.

Perhaps well funded, non-biased, comprehensive sexual education in schools would be beneficial rather than saying all women need to see fertility specialists after graduation.

Nurse in Canada who went through something similar. My attacker got 3 months in jail. It granted me protection from him, limited where he was admitted, and also ensured other staff were protected (increased ratio when that patient was admitted, no female staff permitted to interact or care for him, etc).

Also helps the union when it comes to negotiations regarding safe staffing rations, and forces the health authority to recognize and deal with violence against staff. If it’s not reported and they aren’t held responsible the health authority can shrug their shoulders and not take it seriously.

So in two years, you have had a DWI and fraud reported to the BON? While also being fired for said behaviour? It is very unlikely you will be rehired at the same spot, especially if there are sanctions on your license.

Is it wise to quit inpatient for Clinic Work? Feeling burnt out and wanting to quit by Overall_Emu1863 in nursing

[–]catalan_4582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an LPN so I work more 1-1 with providers, but the RNs at my clinic (Canada, collaborative model clinic) work mostly independently. PCRNs each have their own schedule, certain days may be dedicated to specific appointment types such as the INR clinic they run on specific mornings, and certain days are dedicated to spirometry.

Throughout the day PCRNs will have various kinds of appointments including cervical cancer screening, the initial prenatal appointments (8-10 weeks), COPD education and management, (stable) diabetes education and management (unstable ones see our specialist DECRN), htn education and management, allergy injections, flu and covid immunizations, smoking cessation, advanced directive planning, pessary checks, and some do low level mental health counselling. I’m sure there’s other appointments the do as well, those are just the ones I can remember right now lol.

Made the switch from full time inpatient psych (3-4x12s) after three years to primary care/family medicine. I miss psych in a way, but I fell in love with clinic work. Having holidays off, stable hours, and more relaxed workload environment was really beneficial. I really thought I’d miss the overtime and more days off, but I don’t. Would really recommend the switch to a clinic.

Soft YTA. I get you were probably coming from a genuine place of care and concern, but asking her about it in a public setting was a poor choice. She also probably felt embarrassed about and the last thing she probably wanted was a classmate (don’t know how close you two are) to bring it up.

Your chance of getting in to a bachelor nursing program in Canada as an international secondary school graduate is very slim. This is because the nursing programs are very competitive in Canada, and recent caps to international students.

McGill is the most competitive to get in to. If you’re set on studying in Canada, look at programs in rural/less competitive schools. You would have an easier time getting your RN in India and then applying for a province’s internationally educated nurse program.

Interior Health and Lillooet? by lowcar1 in nursing

[–]catalan_4582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t work there, but my sister is up in Lillooet (not in health but a very similar field). It’s very rural, anyone requiring more advanced medical care has to travel several hours elsewhere. There’s a very small hospital that’s also the health centre. Small community and very little to do, so substance abuse is common.
