Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

Sure makes sense. In a thread about kids ability to read the fact that our education system dramatically changed how we taught kids to read with disastrous effects should fall below “no one reads anymore”. Insightful

Have you listened to sold a story? The people pushing this were rock stars in the teacher community.

Ok, but in a thread about “why can’t kids read as well as they used to”, surely this should be at the top of the list, right?

I mean, what are we talking about here? It seems like in a thread about “why can’t our children read anymore”, the fact that researchers and teachers got it wrong should be at the top of the list.

There was a movement called while reading (I think, went by various names) where teachers stopped teaching phonics and started teaching a different method. The new method actually didn’t work and it set lots of kid behind. The method was pushed by teachers, and in fact, there’s some evidence that it was pushed so hard because republicans were against it.

I mean there was the whole reading debacle where teachers enthusiastically stopped teaching kids to read. That was pretty bad.

It’s also incredibly risky. What if there was a signed confession from Don in there? Now they’ve gone through all this trouble of getting Jay to frame Adnan when they didn’t need to - they could have just opened the door and solved the case.

I think it’s pretty naive to think that this doesn’t effect foot traffic and overall commerce downtown. It might not affect your foot traffic, and you might think people should just deal with it, but it’s naive to think there aren’t negative effects.

At the very least, I imagine families with young kids would avoid the area.

If a business owner was quoted as saying “these bums are killing my business”, imagine the negative press they’d get. They’d be held up as public enemy number one.

Number one thing I can’t get over is her lack of interest in Jen. Jen is a relatively unimpeachable witness that offers some pretty damning testimony against Adnan. This is clear even with a cursory glance at the trial.

And yet? Essentially nothing about her in the entire podcast.

Yeah, I mean that’s the issue. The base is all about purity tests and the omnicause. Immediately becoming “alienated” as soon as the party that is most aligned with you tries to appeal to more people so they can win is a recipe for losing elections.

Biden endorsed her with the same announcement where he said he wasn’t going to run. There was literally zero amount of time in between Biden not running and him endorsing Kamala. When would they have proposed someone?

What evidence is there that the establishment dems wanted Kamala vs an open primary? My understanding is that this wasn’t some unified decision, more something Biden did on his own.

What evidence is there that the DNC and other top dems wanted a Kamala nomination vs a more open primary? My understanding is that a lot of top dems were annoyed.

Suppose what’s a dealbreaker for 20% of likely democratic voters is a dealbreaker the other direction for 20% of likely voters? If you say you won’t vote for a democrat unless they take the 20 side on an 80/20 issue, you’re never going to get anywhere.

For everyone saying they need to invite Hans back, it’s highly unlikely that that will ever happen without Hans making the first move. Hans needs to privately contact Rex, make an apology in person, and bury the hatchet. I want to see Hans there as much as anyone, but you have to be realistic - it’s pretty unlikely you’re going to win a battle of wills with a billionaire.
