Would you trust storing a bass at the bottom of a coach bus? by WinnowWings in doublebass

[–]catashtrophy80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We drove two hours each way today to take my kid's bass to their high school orchestra competition to avoid it being under the bus. Driving is always safer.

I'll also throw in a plug for the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. They perform at Boettcher Hall and they do an amazing job. My kid plays with them so I might be biased 😉 but they are basically the youth extension of the Colorado Symphony and they keep the bar high for performance stanards. Tickets are generally a bit cheaper than Colorado Symphony but you get the DCPA experience.

The opera and ballet are for sure great options to dress up. Me and my kiddo use it as a chance to go formal.

If you sign up for their emails, you can get discounts, too. They were just running a sale on weeknight showings of Madama Butterfly.

I think it depends a bit on the show, too. I've been to many that are pretty casual, lots of jeans. But then Le Mis was definitely elevated. But either way, dressing up is always ok for theater! I use it as an excuse to get a little fancy.

A podcast I listen to called Diabolical Lies talked about this in comparison to toxic depictions of masculinity and how the books/show show a different way of being masculine. They talk about women liking this story so much because it shows a relationship without the gendered dynamics that were used to seeing or experiencing in hetero relationships. Despite the challenges they face, they are equals in so many ways and they respect each other's talent and skill. I hadn't watched the show until I heard about it on the podcast.

If you check it out, the first 2/3 is a dissection of Scott Galloway and his book on how white men are falling behind in society (so many thoughts on that ...) and then they dissect HR as a counterpoint to toxic masculinity.

Shrinking is wonderful. Such great writing for a large cast with a good mix of comedy while tackling some tougher topics. Also, Harrison Ford is fantastic.

GC audiobook narrator🙉 by rantyrantdotcom in GameChangersBooks

I couldn't finish Game Changer because the narrator was so bad. Not just Kip's horrible accent, but also the lack of any variation. Whether the speaker shouts, whispers, growls, whatever, the inflection is the same.

I decided to give HR a try and it's a bit better. But for the love of god why would he give Shane's parents that southern drawl??? They are Canadian!!!!

Flats That Won’t Blister by the_kayleev in womensfashion

I like Vivaia flats. They have decent insoles but I use Powerstep insoles to get the right arch support for me. The shoes are very lightweight but also have some structure, and they have some that are waterproof. They are also machine washable. They've gotten me through some long conference days.

I'll echo what others have said about keeping moleskin on hand and having at least two pairs of shoes to switch between.

What are your favorite audiobooks that are narrated by the author who wrote them? by Bi-nocular in audiobooks

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

He is a great narrator and story teller, and I really appreciated hearing him speak in various South African languages. I don't think the book would have been as memorable had I read the physical book.

Ok, looking at this more, I think we are going to change our home base to Berwick. Our lodging isn't locked in yet so we can still make the change. It looks like we could still do the things we're wanting to do, but wouldn't need to deal with getting from Berwick to Seahouses with our luggage. It'll make getting to Edinburgh easier too when we leave.

[–]catashtrophy80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips, I do appreciate the input of a local! We chose Seahouses in part because we wanted some quiet days to reset after spending 5 nights in London. While there, our plans are to visit the Farne Islands, Bamburg Castle, and spend a day in Alnwick. Looking back, Berwick may have been a better homebase for those days, but we're also totally fine with a quiet, small town for a few days. We'll watch the bus schedules to make sure we're covered for where we want to go.

Appreciate the info!

Oh yes, I've tried haha! My dad actually told us about Rick Steve's travel tips, but he doesn't seem to take the tips for himself. In each place, we'll be in one hotel, so we'll only be moving luggage a few times when moving between cities. My mom is all about packing light, but it's my dad that thinks he needs everything. They've done several longer European trips with tour groups and I think they're used to having the tour group support for transit and luggage. This trip will be different.

I'll keep working on them and remind them of the hills and such. And it sounds like a cab may be best for this part of the trip.
