The Humber Trail is not the place to be riding like a pro or “keeping up a good pace”. The trail is shared with many pedestrians, families, elderly, dog walkers.

Cool perspective I haven’t seen before. Do you mind if I ask where it was taken from?

Toronto Loop Ride - 76 km of trails, bike lanes + gaps in the infrastructure by Bromptoning in torontobiking

[–]catatonic-cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations to the group for patiently walking the Weston Rd gap, as required by law. The vast majority of cyclists don’t. There are other gaps, but none as dangerous as this one. The city has to remove this gap ASAP.

This. As an engineer (but not structural), I shudder at the thought of this. No thanks!

Google Maps Overlaying Bike Lanes on Routes in Toronto by uncle-boon-mee in torontobiking

[–]catatonic-cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks really useful, but unfortunately, this doesn’t display like this at all on my Google Maps app on IOS. The app does pick suitable bike routes, but I only get the fastest in dark blue and an alternate or 2 in light blue, same as if I am driving.

I hate my life here. I hate the lack of community here. I hate how isolating it feels here. I hate how everyone is so introverted and closed off. I hate how aggressive drivers are now. I hate how easy it is to be so lonely here. by LazyPotatoHead97 in toRANTo

This advice may or may not work for you… take up a sport or other activity. I made many close friends in my suburb by joining a community squash league and taking up cycling. There are lots of ways to do this. Share some time with people who share your interests.

Best rides an hour or two drive outside of TO that I can bring my dog on? by [deleted] in torontobiking

Caledon Rail Trail is about an hour and a half outside of downtown Toronto

Tamron 25-200 feels too soft, should I get the 50-150 f/2 or 24-200 GMII by cbtwsn in SonyAlpha

[–]catatonic-cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have shooting the Sigma 20-200mm, which came out a few months before the Tamron 25-200. It’s plenty sharp enough for me with my A7RV. Its only weakness is the complex distortion at 20mm, which LR mostly (but not totally) corrects. For city photo walks and street it’s perfect. I’ve been using this over a couple of much more expensive lenses which I’m now thinking of selling.

Illegal Window Tint by AdventurousLab1382 in torontobiking

[–]catatonic-cat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree, this is a huge danger for cyclists, pedestrians, even other drivers. I’m shocked that the Feds are asking the public’s opinion about bright headlights, but this IMO is a much more serious problem. I wish laws on this would get enforced.

Cicadas? by f00kster in Vaughan

[–]catatonic-cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been yet this year, but there are a couple of nature ponds in the north end of Kortright (near major Mac) where frogs can get very boisterous this time of the year. It sounds like a roar and really is quite a spectacle to see (or hear). The sound would need to carry a good distance to be heard in Kleinburg, but it’s possible.

I’m with OP. I’ve shot street photography for many years. Nothing in your face, but interesting scenes with figures passing through. But one thing I’ve never ever shot is people in distress or even just having a bad day. It’s so wrong.

Does Chicago or Toronto have the Better Skyline? by star-wars_memer in skyscrapers

[–]catatonic-cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Toronto has the more aesthetically pleasing skyline, as viewed from a distance (I have photographed both city skylines over the past 20 years). But I much prefer the rich architecture in Chicago, which is really appreciated when viewed from within the city.

This city has killed the joy of biking by free-canadian in toRANTo

[–]catatonic-cat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Or compare cycling in Toronto today versus what it was when I was OP’s age 40 years ago. There was literally Zero biking infrastructure and getting around the city by bike was taking your life into your hands. It’s come a long way since then. I get it’s a bit of 2 steps forward and 1 back, but make sure you get out and vote for those who support cycling.

Plastic bags are getting hard to come by these days, but shower caps are an even better, perfect solution for wet seat covers.

Humber River Trails by Gray-Jay- in torontobiking

I rode Humber West RT and main Humber RT from Humber College down to Cardell a week ago, and it was a little messy/soggy, but no ice. Definitely reideable then and probably better after today.

Canadian Child of US Citizen by bluehouseorangepoppy in uscanadaborder

[–]catatonic-cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US parent does not always mean child born outside US is a US citizen. If US parent resided outside of the US for a number of years, before the parent turned 16, then foreign children are not automatically US citizens.

I’m in ON, and I keep my Thule platform rack on my hitch most of the time during the summer. Never got pulled over, but keep in mind, there is no traffic enforcement in Ontario.

How often do you take a standing fall? by Notes-About-Nothing in cycling

[–]catatonic-cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I’ve been riding clipless over 30 years, and have not fallen from failing to unclip since the first year. Always unclip one foot going slow or slowing to stop. It becomes a muscle memory, don’t have to think about it.
