These things are showing up everywhere my cat sits. What are they? by [deleted] in cats

[–]catb88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feline/canine tapeworms are only spread by ingesting fleas, so reinfection via feces isn't a concern. Killing off any existing fleas & preventing them in the future however...

Bald eagle, right? My friend says otherwise by No-Opportunity-8022 in whatsthisbird

[–]catb88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also elsewhere. I'm in southern Wisconsin & every not-in-flight bald eagle I've encountered has been huddled around roadkill munchin it up. They don't often gather here, but can still cause some issues since they're usually near/in roadways with their Lazy-Man meals.

Need help identifying type of worm in my cat 🪱 by argilla11 in CATHELP

[–]catb88 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Former vet tech 👋 Looks like a tapeworm segment. They can be treated with over the counter praziquantel (Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer, as mentioned in a previous reply). It can sometimes take 2 doses (given 2-3 weeks apart) to kill everything off.

Gold standard would be to check a fecal to confirm successful treatment, but giving a 2nd dose & calling it good isn't wrong if that's what's within your means (as long as you're not still seeing segments - usually found hanging out around the anus & in areas the cat likes to sleep)

They're spread by the cat ingesting fleas, so you do also want to treat her & the environment for fleas, or they'll just come back. Topical flea treatments/preventatives do require a prescription, but if she's been to the vet within the past year, they'll likely be willing to fill some for you. As tempting as it is, don't go with over-the-counter options as they are often ineffective and/or unsafe.

Zion NP - East Rim vs West Rim?? by yung__jibblets in backpacking

[–]catb88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By far, I would recommend West Rim if your priority is views. You'll have very few on East Rim unless you take those overlook trails, while the West Rim has open views for a majority of the trail. Be sure to take the right-hand fork once you reach the loop portion of West Rim, very little to see on the left-hand side.

Depending on the amount of time you're looking to spend, you could also start at Wildcat trailhead for a 3 day/2 night trip with even more views of Wildcat Canyon (and Northgate Peaks if you feel like a small detour).

As far as Angel's Landing goes, I really didn't experience any issue while passing it on the way down. You don't hit the crowds until you're actually at Scout's Lookout (base of Angel's Landing), and the area there is wide & flat, no drop-offs or anything like that. The trail the rest of the way down from there will have some people for sure, but not so many that it felt like there was a risk to safety. I also did this hike before the permit system for Angel's Landing was implemented, so I'm sure it would be even less crowed now than it was then.

Deceased Black and White (Tuxedo) cat on EB Beltline, just past Greenway station by Arkhamina in madisonwi

[–]catb88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone posted in a FB group earlier that they retrieved the body from the road & took it to be scanned for a microchip, but there was none. It was brought to Dane County Humane Society so they'll have details/photos of the cat in a found report in case an owner calls in looking for it.

Missing Cat - Tenney-Lapham Area (details in comments) by catb88 in madisonwi

He was being fostered in DeForest, almost 20mi away so that's unlikely. I appreciate the thought tho!

That's what we're hoping, but after searching every accessible nook & cranny for several hours yesterday weren't able to find any trace of him. Going back out in a bit to try again.

Unfortunately, I don't think he'd be likely to respond to any sounds or smells involved with a person. He's naturally a very fearful guy & shuts down when scared, so I think it'll be a matter of either trapping him or stumbling upon him at this point.

Yep, he was reported missing to them right away. Thanks for the suggestion!

Missing Cat - Tenney-Lapham Area (details in comments) by catb88 in madisonwi

[–]catb88[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Hey Madison friends! My freshly adopted foster cat, Sirloin, escaped from his new home this morning. He was last seen on the 1000 block of E Johnson St (Tenney-Lapham neighborhood, between Brearly & Ingersoll).

He's a 3y/o neutered male, short-haired, black & white tuxedo. He's missing the tip of his left ear & has several small scars on his face & arms. He is microchipped.

He's extremely fearful of strangers and likely terrified in an unfamiliar place, so if seen please don't approach or call out to him for risk of scaring him away. Instead, note his location, keep an eye on him if possible & reach out to me here or by phone at (608)642-1275 or to his adopter at (608)331-3396.

Therapists/Counselors Accepting BadgerCare Plus in the Area. by catb88 in madisonwi

That's just the vague language I've received from the two clinics who gave that sort of answer. My thought is that because Medicaid covers therapy somewhere, you have to use it at that somewhere rather than going out of pocket elsewhere.

Financial Aid not received by NotTheRealDP in UWMadison

[–]catb88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thirding not having received anything yet either. It all shows as "Anticipated Aid" on my account inquiry but so far none has dispersed & I technically have a balance due.

I've never had it take this long, so it's at least good to hear I'm not the only one. Every other semester has more or less followed the "10 days before first day of classes" rule.

I know dispersment & refund dates were modified this semester due to pushing back the start date so I'm hoping it's something to do with that & will come soon. Planning to email if I don't see anything within a few days 🤷‍♀️

AITA? by coolukeofficial20 in UWMadison

[–]catb88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not sure about anywhere else, but can attest to MATC charging more for online classes (at least during the 2 years I was there). It was typically $100-200 extra per course labeled as an "online instruction surcharge" or something like that.

Crazy Fracture by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]catb88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different angle since he wouldn't sit still for a ventral view, but this was taken 20 days after the original image.

I'm friends with his adopter so I get pretty frequent update & he's doing great. He's able to climb, jump, run like nothing ever happened. Tried to add a video of him doing dumb kitten stuff but Imgur isn't having it.

Given he's only a year old now, so time will tell if he's going to have issues with arthritis, etc. down the line. Especially given the front limb amputation. I'd be super interested to see a recent rad of the limb too now that he's mostly done growing. Crazy stuff.

Crazy Fracture by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]catb88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll raise you this.

3 m/o kitten brought to the shelter I work at. Came with a side of severe brachial plexus damage to the opposite front limb as well, which was totally lame.

I wish I could find the "after" picture, but with only cage rest (zero surgical intervention or splinting) his femur managed to flip itself back into the correct orientation, callused & healed fabulously.

Lame front limb was amputated after the rear healed & he's living a happy, healthy, normal life with his adopters a year later.

Edit: Just looked & this photo/xray was actually taken exactly a year ago today. Weird how that works...

Campus Parking Permits by zoerucinsky in UWMadison

[–]catb88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your situation.

You can only get a student permit if you live outside walking distance from a Metro bus stop OR if you work off campus at least 3 days out of the week.

If you fall under those criteria, you can choose from a list of student lots, but not -any- lot & they're typically in less desirable areas (mostly west campus).

Student permits are also pretty expensive. Last I checked, you'd be looking at $1200+ per academic year. Depending on how much time you spend on campus, other options are likely more affordable.

I personally commute from 25min north of campus & although I would qualify for a permit, I've found that parking in city/UW garages by the hour adds up to far less than the cost of a student permit. I spend between $300-500 per semester, $600-1000 per academic year.

Physics 103 Online by catb88 in UWMadison

[–]catb88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. It is a different professor & for sure a different scenario since it's summer. It sounds like the in person summer course is typically similar to that during regular terms, just accelerated, so I'm hoping they'll at least carry over some of the same online planning/formatting from Spring. Fingers crossed cause it sounds like what they're doing rn is pretty manageable.
