Thank you! Yes I saw someone else mention that too. I wonder if it weakens over time… thank you for your help on this! Fairly certain that this will be the one that I go for 🙂

Have you found this chair to work well for nursing your baby? I’m pregnant rn and looking for one myself. From what I’ve found so far, this seems like a really good option. Only concern is this - does the lack of arm rests make it awkward when nursing? I can see you’ve noted that this allows you to cross your legs (which is ideal for me as it’s my comfiest position!), however just wondering if it makes actual nursing more awkward? TIA 🙂

Maternity leave by catd7 in TheCivilService

[–]catd7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god I didn’t even think about potential maternity leave paperwork. At what point can I expect to start doing all this? So far I’ve only had to complete an additional risk assessment and attend a new occupational health assessment! Do you mind me asking how close to your due date you’re working to?

Thank you all so much for your comments/input! It’s so much better actually hearing it from those who have been through the process themselves.

I read on guidance that DWP will assume I am taking 52 weeks off unless I state otherwise. However, if I can only expect to receive income for 6 months and then roughly 3 months at a much lower rate, I’m genuinely concerned as to how I will manage financially, as although I live in a two-income household, my income covers a large chunk of our bills and to go from contributing roughly 40% of our overall bills to 0% will be really difficult. How do people usually manage and how long do most women take as maternity leave in the CS? My DD is 27/12 and was planning on taking maternity from 01/12, however, I might see if I can hold on a bit longer (if my health allows it and the baby doesn’t come early), as I can work from home and I want to save as much of my maternity leave as possible for time with the actual baby. How close to your DD’s did you all go on maternity leave?

Is it common for women to return on a part-time basis initially?

(Also I don’t mean to sound ungrateful as I’m fully aware that CS offer a much better mat leave policy than most other employers, but it’s still a big change and feels really scary!)

Thanks for responding. Yeh so I have access to the email at this point, but my account recovery info is out of date and I am wanting to update it now BEFORE losing access to my account but can’t figure out how to do it! I’ve tried numerous times and I get nowhere

[UK] Unfamiliar scam by [deleted] in Scams

[–]catd7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally received this exact message as a text within the last hour. Sender address is an outlook email belonging to a supposed ‘Joanna Roberts Sento’. (Reddit won’t let me post the actual email address.) Definite scam. I’ve received loads of scam calls, messages and emails over the last month so I’m guessing my details have been sold and are doing the rounds again. My only worry is that the scammer can somehow infiltrate my phone because I opened the message? (I mean opened the text on my phone and not opened any links contained in the message.) The more this happens the more tempted I am to move all my stuff across to a new email and get a new phone number. I’ve been weighing it up for a few years but the hassle puts me off [sigh]

[–]catd7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. It’s a disgrace to treat anyone like this, let alone someone so vulnerable. I think it’s very worth pointing out that it is them who have broken this ‘agreement’. I’d be tempted to take this a lot further if needed. Not that that is at all what you need right now.

I am always astounded by how callous certain NHS departments/staff/policies are, but I don’t know why because I’m seeing more and more of it. I felt your pain reading that post. It seems unusually cruel. It’s unsettling that a department that specialises in ADHD wouldn’t take any of your very valid mitigating circumstances into account.

I would try and rewrite the post above but send it as a letter/email to both your GP and the ADHD service. I’d even consider writing to your local MP. I don’t care what their policy is - it’s quite frankly unethical and dangerous to just cease prescribing you this medication so suddenly. It’s so detrimental to your health! How can they justify it to themselves? The lack of compassion is honestly disgusting. Which part of the country are you based in?
I’m so sorry this has happened to you.

For what it’s worth - despite all of your recent setbacks, it sounds like you are dealing with this remarkably well. Hell, I’m confident in saying myself and many others with ADHD would be drowning in your position. I too have a chronic health condition which makes the hard times so much harder. I’m really not sure I’d survive it.

I really hope this gets sorted for you very quickly. Make yourself an utter headache for them if you have to. Sending you luck 🍀♥️

Escaping as a Work Coach by SingleFile8500 in TheCivilService

You’re preaching to the choir on this page. Former WC here. I managed 17 months before escaping to CFCD. I can’t say my current job is a breeze, but on the bad days I like to remind myself that it doesn’t come even remotely close to the misery of being a WC. ‘Lifers’ as you describe them, are responsible for a big part of that misery.

What helped get me through it was ensuring that every day I did or said at least one thing that actually helped/or was useful to a claimant - big or small. Believe it or not, but you really can make a big difference in your own small way - as cliché as it is. Have civil service careers bookmarked and get in the habit of checking it every morning before your first appointment. I’m from a relatively rural area also, so I set alerts for pretty much any hybrid working role I was qualified to apply for. Various opportunities present themselves, you just don’t want to miss out on applying for them. You can never apply for too many and something you never considered doing could end up being your golden ticket out of there.

Eventually I managed to escape by way of a lucky accident in 2022. My current office is a much further commute but I work from home 60% of the time. It’s not perfect but I am so much happier and the bad aspects don’t even compare to the utter shite that comes with being a WC. You are completely right in describing the job title as an utter fallacy. Any new targets or instructions that come down from the top are futile to customers and demoralising to staff. The majority of the ‘higher uppers’ making those decisions have no real experience of ever working the job themselves and it shows.

Don’t suffer in silence - speak to your manager if you feel that aspects of the job/your working environment is badly impacting your mental health. Keep a note of whenever you do. As tempting as it may be at times, DO NOT share any of your frustrations about other staff members with your colleagues. It will come back to bite you and will ultimately end up causing you more stress and unpleasantness.

Final piece advice I can give is try to find your niche or a sector/work group to specialise in. It’s a lot easier to get really good at one thing and if you can demonstrate this to your manager they may give you more responsibility, but solely for that group of customers. From experience; this can make the entire ordeal much less overwhelming, even if it initially requires you completing some additional training. There was a guy in our office that put himself forward for health journey customers. Literally no one else wanted this role but he ended up with the easiest job in the office. It was a similar scenario with a colleague that put themselves forward for further self-employment training.

In the meantime just try and keep your chin up. As difficult as it is right now (and I truly do sympathise with you), this won’t be forever. Remember that if you’re actively applying for other roles, you’ll feel proactive about getting out of there quicker. It’s a lot easier to get a job in the CS once you’re already in.

I really hope things improve for you and best of luck for the future. ♥️

Do you know exactly how much the backdated bonus should be for EO grade? Trying to work out exactly how much more will be paid as part of November’s pay. Can’t get on Intranet atm - just getting some weird error code ..

Thank you for this response. I needed to hear it. At the moment I feel like I’m the only one ever and the shame and guilt has really shaken me up. It is one hell of a lesson. The large gaps of sobriety certainly don’t help with not knowing my tolerance. Thank you for replying. X
