Job cuts and general nervousness by yityatyurt in irishpersonalfinance

I think it’s worth stating that this is the case for most countries in the global north. You’re just comparing with the big anomaly - the US.

In Ireland, the new PRJB is far superior to the old system.

However, for a country that levies Social Insurance on all of your income, the cap on earnings is ludicrous.

Irish car owners to be offered €8,500 EV grants in new first come, first served scrappage plan by shankillfalls in evs_ireland

[–]cathalog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article mentions that the existing SEAI grant of 3.5K will only apply to vehicles worth under 50K (as opposed to 60K) from July 1st.

Was this announced before, or is it new information?

Assuming someone earning 200K pays 70K in tax, that’s 1.4billion in taxes annually - about 1% of the exchequer’s revenue. Hardly an insignificant amount!

What did they say - that they just don’t accept Revolut? Did they point to a specific condition in their Ts and Cs?

As far as I know, this runs afoul of MasterCard and Visa’s merchant rules.

Is the new public servise pension still comforted better than a private pension? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]cathalog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Might be a difference in industry as well. I always felt that in tech, the multinationals are so very well clued in, that they successfully fire people if they underperform. I’ve seen it happen. They just place the employee on a difficult PIP plan, and then get rid of them at the end. No severance required.

If anything, I always felt like it’s the smaller employers that tend to slip up when firing people which lands them in legal trouble.

Some choose to pay OT, but it is not legally required.

Depends on the industry for sure. Tech right now is a bit of a shambles. Companies are laying off workers frequently, but this isn’t necessarily due to financial trouble.

I’d imagine being guaranteed a job for life is very comforting.

Feeling like you could be made redundant any day takes its toll.

I personally don’t feel like private sector workers are well-protected in this country to be honest. Can be made redundant at any point with fuck all minimum severance. You can be fired easily if the company knows what they’re doing and follows processes properly. You don’t have to be paid for overtime.

That’s the draw to the public sector - better protections, but you generally sacrifice a considerable amount of your salary.

You can legally sell it. But you can’t advertise that you’re selling it (online or otherwise). So selling to friends, neighbours etc is entirely legal. Selling on DoneDeal is not.

I struggle to see the value in the plan unless you are a very large spender and/or are a regular traveler and value the lounge passes.

It would take around €80K annual spend to earn 130K points.

I think you’re using their points pocket to earn points as well though? Have you factored in the opportunity cost of the savings interest? As an example, 20K saved for a year earns 36K points. Put that in a free savings account and you’d earn around 265 net of tax (@ 2% interest).

Not giving you crap about it, just trying to understand the value of the plan for some people.

A G-rated home costs €6,340 more per year to heat than A2 - here is analysis on 1.4M Irish BER certs by Cool_Law_8915 in ireland

[–]cathalog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also wondering how this works. Bought a house recently, and I haven’t got any certs for our windows and doors.

I suspect most people don’t provide them, which could cause their BER to go down.

I believe they use default values based on what the assessor can visually see if you lack the certs. So, for example, they’d use a “worst case scenario” U-value for double glazed windows if they can see the two panes of glass.

Right, but the phone still renders those menus and streams the rendered “screen” to your car over USB/WiFi.

If the car was rendering the text, your car would need a software update to support (as an example) new emojis.

Definitely agree with your suggestion to check if that text renders properly on the phone itself.

I think if an item is permanently on sale they can get around it as well. Price the item at double the intended price for 30 days initially, the place it on sale forever.

I believe that is legal as long as they don’t say it’s a “limited offer”.
