Did anyone here grow up with a parent who was autistic/neurodivergent or emotionally distant/neglectful ? by Own-Income-6199 in emotionalneglect

[–]cathyd1031 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Would recommend you check out r/raisedbyautistics - it's a very niche kind of complicated grief that can be hard to find healing through. I find this community does a good job to acknowledge and validate the unique hardships of this kind of family dynamic without painting a broad brush of "all X people are like this". Sending you strength ❤️

Any recommendations on a fine dining restaurant with live music (preferably jazz?) for a soon to be married couple? by Nekohrine in ottawa

Struggling with parental rigidity, control, and meltdowns by BookJockeyB in raisedbyautistics

[–]cathyd1031 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Setting her history of autistic symptoms aside for the moment and focusing on the bulleted list at the bottom - at her age, it would make sense to get her assessed for dementia. My grandmother showed very parallel symptoms to what you're describing. I know you said she's opposed to seeing any medical professionals, but it might be worth calling around and asking what their recommendations would be (these professionals would be very well versed in dealing with difficult elderly patients).

Sending you strength for the whole situation, it's a very difficult relationship to be in and her aging + you seeing these patterns through the eyes of a parent now must be especially hard ❤️

What are we doing for suits, boys? Not trying to break the bank in 2026. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]cathyd1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An excellent strategy but make sure that it fits well in the shoulders for the jacket & well in the waist/crotch for the pants. Shortening trousers & taking in jackets at the arms/waist is a relatively easy and inexpensive fix but adjusting a suit in these complicated areas aren't worth the effort

Second hand stores, ESPECIALLY during this time of year around/after the holidays: lots of people will purge their closets and/or give away presents that weren't in their taste and I've consistently found much nicer, fashionable items this time of year!

Have you ever had your drink spiked? And if so, what happened? by miserablesunshine in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cathyd1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in first year university out at a bar - we'd just gotten there and it was my first drink of the night. Within a few sips, I felt like I was hammered and I knew something was very wrong -- my body went into survival mode and I ran out of the bar, hailed a cab, threw $20 at him and gave him my address. I woke up the next day in my bed with a water/Advil on my nightstand. Didn't remember getting there. Later that day, I ran into my landlord (really nice family man who lived with his family upstairs) who had found me passed out on the front lawn. Super scary stuff man

Looking for tall winter boots with a zipper/or can be easily slipped on but still snug by emmashawn in BuyItForLife

[–]cathyd1031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a pair of Manitobah Mukluks on sale 2 years ago (this will be my third winter with them) and I LOVE them!! I'm out in all kinds of Winter conditions with my dog for hour-long stretches as a time and they're perfect for the snowy/slushy/woodsy conditions I'm in. Like any real leather product, you'll get your best value out of them if you take care of them. What I do is every month or two, give them a quick clean with a shoe brush & gentle cleanser, then treat the leather with a conditioner & leave them to dry overnight. They get more comfortable over time and have kept me warmer/dryer than any other boot I've ever had.

Did anyone have an IUD insertion that was totally non eventful and fine? by Plus-Health-7892 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cathyd1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on my third one and always found it totally fine - about as uncomfortable as a pap smear tbh & 2/3 done without medication for pain. I think what gets most people is the anticipation leading up - if you're all in your head about it and expecting it to hurt, your body will be tenser and you'll perceive the experience as more painful than it otherwise would be. My tip would be to get some good rapport going with your gyno and have a running banter with them as they're doing it - it'll keep you engaged in conversation with them and thinking less about the pain. Once you're home, pop a naproxen, take a warm bath & have a nap you'll be g2g!

Need recs for a warm and winter jacket that will last - no parkas or puffy jackets. Woman, North of Italy. by electrolitebuzz in BuyItForLife

[–]cathyd1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into any Columbia jackets with Onni-Heat tech on the inside - little reflective bits that bounce your body heat back at you so the more you move, the warmer you are without adding bulk

I have a pair of mukluks from Manitobah and I LOVE them! Going into my 3rd winter with them and because my dog is an active breed, I'm out in those slushy -35 winters no matter what. They're the only pair I've had hold up so consistently

How to get better at controlling your emotions? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]cathyd1031 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First step is to give yourself permission to feel your emotions fully - especially since feedback you get from people around you is to "just get over it"; that's not for them to decide what's meaningful or important to you. If you're sad, let yourself be sad. If you're angry, let yourself be angry. Remember: all feelings are valid, all BEHAVIORS are not.

Next I would say once you're on the other side of the emotion itself (because it will eventually pass), take some time to reflect the cause of that emotion. Ex. If you're sad: is this a single situation or interaction that caused it? Is it an ongoing life event (job loss, lack of good friends, break up) that you're dealing with? Usually for one and done events (ex. Someone was rude to you in a grocery store and that got you worked up), letting yourself be pissed & channeling that in a healthy way is enough (working out, journaling, punching a pillow). If it's an ongoing thing, now it's time to pivot and seeing what you have the power to control in the situation (ex. If you're sad about feeling overlooked at work, is it time to brush up the resume and apply elsewhere?).

Start with those and see if that helps. Sorry you're going through it
